DDC Advocacy (DDCA) is an issue advocacy firm headquartered in Washington, D.C., and National Harbor, Maryland.[2][3][4] It was founded in 1996.[3][5][6] DDCA’s services and products include political strategy, global and local in-district campaigns, interactive services, outreach, grassroots technology, PAC compliance, and government services.[2][4] DDCA serves corporations, associations, and non-profit organizations in different industries such as energy, managed care and defense.[2] The company has managed public affairs and communications campaigns worldwide, including the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia.[7]

History

In 1996 B.R. McConnon III founded Democracy Data and Communications (DDC) as a political software and technology-consulting firm.[6][4]

In 1997, DDC expanded its product offerings and services for its PAC, communications, and government affairs clients after an investment from John Brady of Alfred Street Partners.[8] In 2002, DDC ranked 72nd on the Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Companies list.[9]

The company formed a partnership with OnPoint Advocacy, a grassroots campaign-based public affairs firm.[10][11] The partnership with OnPoint allowed DDC to offer its clients additional grassroots advocacy services, including fieldwork, community-based earned media, online awareness and recruitment, stakeholder mobilization, public education, and advocate development.[12]

DDC merged with OnPoint Advocacy, becoming DDC Advocacy (DDCA) to provide integrated advocacy programs.[12]

In 2011, DDCA acquired BlueFront Strategies, a consulting and public affairs firm, which former White House Political Director Sara Taylor Fagen founded.[13] The acquisition expanded DDCA’s issue advocacy offerings to include political strategy, campaign management, and audience targeting.[14]

In 2012, DDCA launched a new website reflecting the firm’s full-service advocacy capabilities.[15]

B.R. McConnon III is the Chairman, CEO, and founding partner of DDC Advocacy.[3] As of March 2013, DDCA is comprised of six additional partners, including President Jim Gianiny, Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jim Murphy, partner Sara Fagen, partner Tom Benjamin, partner John Brady, and partner Michael Shue.[3]

DDC Advocacy employs about 200 professionals between its National Harbor, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., offices.[7] The company maintains hundreds of field operatives in 50 states who offer expertise in political campaigning, public relations, earned media, and lobbying.[16]

Services and Products

Political Strategy

Former White House Political Director Sara Fagen leads DDCA’s political strategy division.[14] To address legislative or regulatory challenges specific to an industry or organization, Fagen and her team integrate strategy, research, media, micro-targeting, and digital solutions to address advocacy issues.[16]

Global and Local In-District Campaigns

DDCA campaign strategists collaborate with a team of bipartisan field operatives to conceive, execute, and closely monitor campaigns.[17] The focuses of the campaigns are varied, and cover a range of issues and jurisdictions.[17] In 2010, DDCA hired Steve Rice as Vice President of Field Operations.[17]

Interactive

DDCA’s interactive strategy team utilizes research and microtargeting capabilities to communicate with and mobilize audiences via online and offline channels.[18] The DDCA engages advocates through interactive, online outreach, and online advertising.[17][18]

Outreach

DDCA maintains an Advocacy Center to connect with global and US audiences.[19] The company’s Advocacy Center conducts different activities and services, which include collaborating with advocates to create personalized letters, mobilizing their participation in local events, and executing high-volume outreach; the center conducts get-out-the-vote calls and surveys for prospecting.[19]

Grassroots and Legislative Technology

DDCA offers grassroots and legislative technology to aid in campaign organization and management, which engages and activates advocates, and tracks participation.[5][4] The firm’s technology products include Democracy Direct® Grassroots, Capitol Connect®, Maps Plus, and Legislator Direct®.[4]

PAC Compliance

DDCA maintains an in-house team of PAC management professionals, and also provides technology products to maintain PAC compliance.[16][4] Clients outsource the development of their PACs to DDCA’s PAC compliance staff for reporting, PAC management, and consultation.[20] In addition, the company offers Democracy Direct® PAC and PACWeb® software solutions, which aim to help clients manage and expand their PACs.[4]
