PCN Technology is an Ethernet and IP networking company.[1] (PCN) The company is known for its patented IT products and services in the automation and control markets.[2][3][4][5] PCN Technology is headquartered in San Diego.[6][5]

History

Daniel Drolet and David Strumpf cofounded PCN Technology in 2004 while working on technologies and projects in the industrial and energy space focused on connecting SCADA networks to the Internet.[7][8] The pair spent several years funding and developing hardware, firmware and software for converting standard conductive wire used in independent SCADA networks into infrastructure that would also include TCP/IP communication systems that would interface to other network types.[7][1][5]

First focused in California, PCN expanded to serve international clients.[8] The company established its headquarters in San Diego in 2008.[7][8][5] The company raised $8 million in a Series A funding in 2008, approximately $3 million between 2008 and 2012 and another $5.25 million in venture funding in 2012.[9][7][10]

In 2012, The company’s media technologies assisted in providing network solutions for building and transportation network owners impacted by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.[11][5]

Leadership

Venkat Shastri is the company’s CEO.[6][5] Dave Karpenske is the company’s COO and worked at JDS Uniphase prior to PCN.[4][3][5] David Strumpf is a cofounder and the CTO.[2][12][5] Daniel Drolet is a co-founder and EVP of Business Development and Marketing.[1][5] Irwin Pfister, the former CEO of Schlumberger SEMA and EVP of Schlumberger, is the company’s Executive Chairman and a lead investor in PCN.[5][2][12] Bill Kingsley is also a Director and represents Enertech Capital’s investment in PCN.[13][1]

PCN’s products use patented, physical-layer technologies to allow open standards connectivity to the Internet by using existing automation and control cabling and infrastructure.[5][1][14] PCN services IP-485 communication and networking devices including network servers and clients, and other specialty communication and networking devices.[9][1][5]

PCN's IP-485 technologies and products allow Internet connectivity and IP upgrades to existing multi-drop automation and control applications so network owners do not need to run CAT 5/6 cabling.[15][5][16] Its technologies allow virtualization and software-defined networking from the cloud to automation and control networks and connectivity to fiber, wireless and other networks.[15][1][5] The company products clear viruses, including Stuxnet, from industrial control networks.[15][1][5][16]

Awards

In 2007, the company received the North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology,[17] the Austin Clean Energy Venture Conference award as The Most Outstanding Clean Energy Smart Grid Venture Award,[18] and was selected as one of the Top 40 Technology Companies in California by EuroStart Capital Partners.[19]
