GroundWork, Inc. is an open-source platform for [enterprise-level network, application, and cloud management.[1] GroundWork competes with the four largest proprietary systems-management products in the world, Tivoli, Openview, Patrol, and Unicenter, and is known for being the first company to develop enterprise-class open source products for systems and network administrators.[2][3] GroundWork products are used by organizations in more than 50 countries, and the company’s customers include AOL, Boeing, Crocs, National Australia Bank, Siemens, and Stanford University.[1]

GroundWork was founded by Dave Lilly and Robert Fanini in 2004, and the company is headquartered in San Francisco, California.[4][5][6]

History

Prior to founding GroundWork, Robert Fanini and Dave Lilly founded SiteROCK, an e-Commerce management service that was sold to Avasta in 2002.[7][5] The pair launched GroundWork in 2003, and Robert Fanini served as the first CEO.[7] Later CEOs included Ranga Rangachari and Pete Jackson.[4][8] Dave Lilly is the current CEO.[9]

GroundWork was the first company to market enterprise-class open source products for systems and network administrators.[2] The company was also an early supporter of the open source community, and co-sponsored the creation of BayLISA, a discussion forum for open source related topics.[2]

Since its founding in 2004, GroundWork has raised more than $28.5 million in venture funding.[5][10][6][11]

Products and Services

GroundWork’s primary products are a combination of open source and proprietary systems and network management software.[2][12] The company's software is built on several open source products and standards including Apache, and the Nagios open source systems management project.[3][13][14]

GroundWork’s flagship product is called GroundWork Monitor.[3][15] The product bundles and enhances several successful open source IT management tools to streamline deployment as a single solution.[16][17] In June 2010, GroundWork Open Source introduced a product called Cloud Connector that integrates Eucalyptus with Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud.[15][18] GroundWork also offers a suite of services to assist organizations with the planning, implementation, and operation of enterprise-level network management.[1][16]

In February 2013, the company began offering a version of its cloud monitoring tool that runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.[19]

Awards

GroundWork Open Source was named to the CRN Emerging Vendors List in 2008, 2009, and 2010.[20]
