Timothy John Betar (born April 8, 1990), better known online as TimtheTatman or just Tim, is a full-time Twitch streamer and internet personality, known for his content on both Twitch.tv and YouTube.[1] He was born in the United States and grew up in Syracuse, New York.[2][3] Playing sports and video games all his life, he has always considered himself a competitor.[3]

Career

Betar started streaming on Twitch in 2012 and has amassed over 3,000,000 followers since.[4][5] Broadcasting games such as Overwatch, Fortnite, and World of Warcraft, the variety channel attracts thousands of viewers each day.[4][1] His fans call themselves the "TatmanArmy" and spend every day, with the exception of Sunday, in Tim's stream.[6] Tim currently goes live twice per day, Monday through Thursday from 10am-1pm and 8pm-12am EST. On Fridays and Saturdays he streams from 8am-12pm EST.[4]

Betar is a Monster Energy eSports athlete and is also sponsored by the Audio-Technica Corporation.[7][2][7] He is a certified Twitch partner and has been a full-time creator since March 27, 2014.[8][9] He relies solely on the revenue he generates from both Twitch.tv and YouTube. Joining YouTube on January 23, 2011, the channel has grown to 1.2 million subscribers and counting with videos viewed over 111,000,000 times.[10][9]

With the release of Epic Games's Fortnite in July 2017, Twitch.tv stream viewership skyrocketed. The game streamed nearly 151 million hours during the first month of release.[11] Although the spike in popularity eventually leveled, streamers such as Betar, Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, and Turner "Tfue" Tenny, saw a steady increase in followers as the game grew in popularity.[12][13]

During E3 2018, Epic Games held its first-ever Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am, in which celebrities from several avenues were paired up with professional gamers to raise money for charity.[14] Betar teamed up with Mack Wilds, an actor and recording artist, for the event. Although placing out of the prize pool, the pair were part of one of the year's biggest moments in gaming, opening doors for competitive Fortnite.[15]

The Gamers' Choice Award's debuted its first show December 2018. The special aired live on CBS. It joined both the video game industry and its players for an evening honoring them based on fan feedback.[16] Here, Betar won the award for Fan Favorite Male Streamer/Gamer of the Year. A star-studded category that included some of the world's most popular gamer's, including: Ninja, Tfue, Dr. Disrespect, and Shroud. Betar's fans outlasted the competition to allow TimTheTatman to bring home the honor.[17]

During Super Bowl LIII, Betar and fellow gamer, Ninja, were flown to Los Angeles, California and were on set for the NFL 100 commercial which showcased some of the league's biggest stars, including, but not limited to, Peyton Manning, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Marshawn Lynch. The commercial is called the "100-Year Game" and commemorates the NFL's journey thus far.[18] The two were also invited to attend Super Bowl LIII in partnership with the NFL.[19]

Charity

While gaming has opened up many streams of revenue for Betar, it has also allowed him to give back. In 2018, Betar teamed up with fellow streamers to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital under the GuardianCon charity stream marathon. The event raised over 2.7 million for children's medical research.[20] During his time block alone, Betar was able to set the Twitch.tv charitable donation record by raising over $106,000 in 4 hours.[21][22]

Betar has also been featured in Twitch charity campaigns such as "Thursday Night Football", where viewers were able to put their football skills and knowledge to the test.[23] As viewers interacted with and tried to predict the games outcome during the stream, viewers were encouraged to donate "bits", a form of online currency, which Twitch.tv then converted to cash. For every 100 bits donated, they gave $1 to the American Cancer Society.[23]
