Samantha Carter is testing the Merlin's phase-shifting device in one of the SGC's isolation rooms, and Mitchell walks in asking how everything is. He is cut off when he walks face-first into a force field. It turns out Carter had written a sign that read "DO NOT ENTER," referring to the activate force shield, but forgot to post it outside the room.

Carter had set up the force field in order to restrict the range of Merlin's device to only the room, so that no one could walk in as she conducted her tests. The purpose of the tests was to see if the device's safety protocols could be rewritten to create a large phase-shifting field. Mitchell informs her that a recent sighting of Daniel Jackson turned out to be a false alarm. Mitchell says that since Teal'c is back (from the mission to ascertain the validity of the Daniel sighting), the team could all get some lunch and go over the mission report together. Carter wants to run one more test, and says that Mitchell can watch her from the observation room. Mitchell implies on timing her and heads up there. Carter activates the device and becomes phased. While phase-shifted, she begins to hear a strange sound. Merlin's device begins to emit a strange glow, which after a second or two, sucks in the isolation room's phase-shifted contents.

Meanwhile, Mitchell grows impatient, and then worried, when Sam fails to reappear as planned.

The strange glow subsides, and Carter reappears in the same room, but she can hear sirens blaring, Mitchell is missing from the observation room, and there is now an explosive pattern on the floor. Hearing noises outside she lowers the force field, only to see a concerned Dr. Lee enter. He asks if Carter is all right, but he calls her Major Carter instead of Lieutenant Colonel. Carter is puzzled, but she is even more puzzled when Major Lorne enters the room to inquire on her well-being.

Carter is surprised and confused that Lorne is present on Earth, rather than his regular station on Atlantis. Lorne clarifies Carter's confusion by stating that he works at the SGC as leader of SG-1.

Lorne heads to General Hammond, apparently the commander of the base, and briefs him on what has happened. On their way down Carter's interrogation room, Lorne tells Hammond that this Carter claims to be from a parallel universe. Carter is questioned by Lorne. She asks about the other memebrs of SG-1 and learns that Daniel was taken by the Ori a few weeks ago, Mitchell left the military, Teal’c returned to the Jaffa and Vala is under arrest at Area 51. Carter inquires to see the footage of the incident in the lab, and says that maybe she can help Lorne recover "their" world's Carter. Hammond, who is watching her through video link, tells Dr. Lee to show the footage to her.

The video of their Carter's power capacitor experiment shows that there was a power spike and lots of commotion in the lab, until the video goes to a static screen. Dr. Lee says there was a large explosion and that instead of finding charred remains they found the regular universe's Carter. Sam asks what the capacitors were used for. Lee replies that they were needed to extract energy from parallel universes. Their Carter found a way around the dangerous exotic particles that are created from a prolonged extraction of energy from any single universe. Their Carter discovered that by opening the inter-universal bridge for only a microsecond and taking a small amount of energy from many universes. Carter hypothesizes that she was pulled into this universe because she was protected by a force shield and because both Carters were running experiments that involved interdimensional technology at the same time. Due to Carter being out of phase and shielded, she was transported into this alternate world. Lorne asks hopefully that maybe the Carters were teleported to each other's universes. Carter replies that "it doesn't work like that," implying that their Carter was killed.

Hammond heads to the Presidents room and asks to see him, as he is currently on the phone. Carter notices Hammond enter the room and feels strange seeing him back in command of the SGC. The two have a talk about the current events. Three years ago when Anubis attacked Earth at that time in their universe, the President of the United States revealed the existence of the Stargate program to the world. This created a fervor with countries around the world, stressing international relations. A month ago they were attacked by the Ori as they marched on the galaxy. They were able to defend Earth using the Antarctica control chair against the one Ori ship but as a result almost depleted the ZPM in the process. Recent reports reveal the Ori forces in the galaxy are banding together for a full scale attack against Earth, with five ships coming in five days. They need her help to finish their Carter’s work in order to mount a defense.

Carter is released from custody and begins work in her lab. Lorne walks in and inquires about her. She shows him a picture she found and notices a wedding ring. First she asks if her and Lorne married. He quickly denies her guess and tells her the band is for “McKay”. To which her response is “Rodney McKay”. He comments on how she saw something in him which no-one else did. Realising this Carter's work is incomplete and catching up would take longer than is available, she shows them the phase device. Hammond, Lorne and Lee are all shocked when it works, especially seeing Carter disappear and reappear. She says that she was working on the device in her world to hide Earth from the Ori and thinks she can use it to save their Earth.

After analysing the ZPM she finds there isn’t enough power and asks Hammond about another means. They head to the Command office which she finds to be completely different with secret service, pictures of presidents and, the flooring. She heads into the debriefing room to see politicians talking, and Hank Landry approaching them. Hammond introduces him as President of the Untied States, Sam is shocked. Landry tells Carter that she will get the power she needs, but she reinforces that her needs are about 80% of the whole United States power grid.

The Ori ships appear and have passed the safety zone, Carter and Lee are working feverishly to finish. They redirect power to the device, from space the whole of the lit United States turns to darkness. They need 95% power to insure a stable cloak. The power increases to 93% before they are told time has run out, and Sam activates the cloak. The whole planet vanishes in a flash of light, and nothing is now in front of the Ori ships. The ships open fire thinking the Earth has simply cloaked and is where it should be, but hit nothing. Landry congratulates Carter on a job well done and walks into the gate room where there is a mob of reporters waiting to talk to her; Landry says “just smile”.

Watching the talk in the gate room, Carter is now dressed up for a conversance and is considered by many a hero for saving the planet. While talking to guests and Landry, a protestor walks in repeatedly saying “No security without freedom”. Although the protestor is quickly neutralized by Landry's security forces (using Goa'uld torture devices), Landry and Carter are beamed up to a spacecraft for protection. Carter says “the Prometheus?” over the intercom a voice says “welcome to Air Force One”. Carter and Landry talk about how he had to enforce martial law and is not liked by all people.

Carter, back in the SGC, watches the news and sees an F-302 bombing a Irish village. Hammond reinforces they were bombing terrorists. Angry, Carter accuses that the 302’s are being used against political enemies. Hammond resplies that the “threat is always out there” to which Carter replies “that’s the problem”.

Carter goes to McKay for help with the Inter-universe bridge and also tells him bluntly that she is not the Carter he knows. Dr Lee finds a device in a cave in Glastonbury and taking a gamble tells Landry who wants to knows what it does. Lee informs him they don’t know anything about it, but Carter would. Hammond and Landry have a brief discussion, agreeing they cannot afford to lose this Carter, nor are they going to let the technology she knows about disappear with her.

McKay still confused about the situation talks more with Carter. She proclaims that in her universe he wouldn’t back down from a challenge and is a forthright, unselfish, courageous person. McKay realises that she is lying and agrees to helping her.

She returns to the SGC to find her equipment is not there. She inquires as to where her equipment is and Landry says still in Area 51; and that the timing is not good for her to go back, especially with the Plebiscite as they had to cancel elections due to widespread unrest that it is an inside vote. She does not want to be used as a political stand point and wants to go home to help her universe. Landry tells her she can’t "run off to another place when things get rough". Hammond goes to talk with Landry and the situation. Landry says they made "her into a symbol of hope" Hammond then tells Landry that "he took them down this road, getting back will be even harder" On Carter’s way out she is informed that she has been spied upon. They know about her visit to McKay and push the fact he might be a target for the Anti-trust investigation for the money put into defensive technology. She thinks they are blackmailing him, and informs him "that if she plays her part everything will be fine"

Cater goes to visit Mitchell, who is now in a wheelchair. He proclaims he fought for freedom and look where he is now. He says that he was used as a tool for morale for the country. He called about going to work for the SGC and they stopped his treatment and declined his job. Carter gets distressed about this and says "this was a bad mistake." Mitchell tells her that "this is the price for sticking up for your principles." On the street she spots a black car with darkened windows watching her. She calls Charlie, Landry advisor and tells him she’ll play ball, which he replies "wise decision."

In the interview she pushes that as her Presidential advisor on topics, she is going to talk about improving public relations and restoring civil liberties. Charlie doesn’t like what he is hearing and tells the broadcaster to cut the transmission. She implies that "citizens are in control of their own freedom and government", which the broadcaster tells her that they cut the transmission. At McKay’s house she is looking to see what impact here speech had, unfortunately they came up with a cover story about her being ill from stress and exhaustion. She says "people heard her." McKay then responses, "which people?"

On her way out of McKay's house she is attacked by the secret service, which she is able to fight off, but they zat her and take her away. On Air Force One, Carter has been gagged and brought to Landry who tells Charlie to remove it. In a talk with her he says that public relation and the phase technology are important, that her world still has freedom and the Stargate program is one of the greatest secrets that the government has even known. She then talks about General Hank Landry and how he would not allow the rest of the galaxy to fall to the Ori.

McKay is working on the device that was recently discovered earlier, McKay has now replaced Carter’s position as "special advisor to the President" and also informs her that they are going to build the inter-universe bridge. Carter tells McKay to nudge the president about galactic threat.

Back in her world Dr Lee is using a sound device and is scanning the area, she reappears behind him in a flash of light and goes unnoticed until she says his name. In shock he drops the sound device and feedback screeches though the earphones.

Back in her lab talking with Vala, Teal’c and Mitchell she has been gone for 2 weeks and no information about Daniel has appeared as of yet. She felt that in the other universe was creepy. Vala inquires about where she was, Carter replies "in jail" which Vala replies "not again." Mitchell asks about the rest of them but she doesn’t want to talk about it. She asks about what they have been doing for two weeks, after failed attempts using the Sodan cloaking device. They took shifts trying to comfort Carter, by "talking to an empty room" as Mitchell put it. Carter getting curious asks what they said, but Mitchell says he has files to read, Teal’c has a sparring session and Vala is bidding for a TimeShare on ebay. They all leave the room, Vala runs back in and hugs Carter, welcoming her back. Carter then replies that it's good to be home.
