The Great American Bash 2007 was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It was the fourth annual Great American Bash event produced by WWE and it took place on July 22 2007 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.[1] The official theme song was "The Church of Hot Addiction" by Cobra Starship.[2]

The main event was for the WWE Championship between John Cena and Bobby Lashley, which Cena won after an FU from the second rope.[3] The main matches on the undercard were The Great Khali versus Batista versus Kane in a Triple Threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship and John Morrison versus CM Punk for the ECW Championship.[4][5]

Report

Background

The main feud heading into The Great American Bash on the RAW brand was between John Cena and Bobby Lashley with the two battling over the WWE Championship. The feud began on the June 11 2007 edition of RAW when Lashley was drafted to the RAW brand and stripped of his ECW Championship.[6] Three weeks later on the July 2 edition of RAW, a "Beat the Clock" tournament was held to determine John Cena's opponent for the WWE Championship at The Great American Bash.[7] The tournament matches included, Randy Orton versus Jeff Hardy, King Booker versus Val Venis, Mr. Kennedy versus Super Crazy, and Bobby Lashley versus Shelton Benjamin.[7] Lashley ended up winning the tournament by defeating Benjamin in less than 5 minutes and therefore becoming the number one contender to the WWE Championship.[7]

The main feud on the SmackDown! brand was between The Great Khali, Batista, and Kane with the three battling over the World Heavyweight Championship. At the previous PPV, Vengeance, then-World champion Edge defeated Batista in a "Last Chance" match to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.[8] On the July 6 edition of SmackDown!, SmackDown! General Manager Theodore Long announced that Edge would be defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Kane at The Great American Bash.[9][10] The next week on SmackDown!, The Great Khali issued an open challenge for a match at The Great American Bash, which was accepted by Batista.[11] Later that night, Edge held a Mardi Gras celebration.[12] During the celebration, Kane, disguised as a king, came out and attacked Edge and in the process legitimately injuring his left pectoral muscle.[13][14] On the July 20 edition of SmackDown!, Edge was forced to vacate the World Heavyweight Championship.[15][13] Theodore Long then announced that there would be a 20-Man Battle Royal later that night to determine a new World Heavyweight Champion.[16][15] Khali would end up winning the Battle Royal by last eliminating Kane and Batista.[15] That same night, Kane and Batista had a number one contenders match to determine Khali's opponent for The Great American Bash, but Khali would interfere, resulting in the match being declared a no-contest.[16] Long finalized that both Kane and Batista would end up facing Khali for the championship at The Great American Bash.[15][16]

The main feud on the ECW brand was between John Morrison and CM Punk with the two battling over the ECW Championship. At the previous PPV, Vengeance, Morrison (then known as Johnny Nitro) defeated Punk to win the vacant ECW Championship.[17] Nitro was a replacement for Chris Benoit, who was absent due to "personal reasons".[18] On the June 26 edition of ECW, CM Punk defeated Elijah Burke in a two out of three falls match to once again become the number one contender to the ECW Championship.[19]

Event

Before the event started, Chuck Palumbo defeated Chris Masters in a dark match.[20][21]

The first match of the event was between Montel Vontavious Porter and Matt Hardy for the WWE United States Championship. The two started a great wrestling match. Hardy was in control earlier in the match but later MVP got control of the match after he delivered Hardy physical beatings in his head. MVP delivered Hardy a Playmaker and then pinned him to get the victory and to retain the United States Championship.[22]

The second match was a Cruiserweight Open match for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Chavo Guerrero defended the title against Funaki, Jimmy Wang Yang, Shannon Moore and Jamie Noble. Hornswoggle became a part of the match because he was in the ring at the moment the bell rang. All the cruiserweights were down except Noble. Hornswoggle came surprisingly and delivered Noble a Tadpole Splash. Hornswoggle went on to pin Noble to get the victory and the Cruiserweight Championship.[23][24]

The third match was a Singapore Cane on a Pole match between Carlito and Sandman. The rules of the match were simple that the one who retrieved the cane from the pole was allowed to use the cane. Sandman had originally retrieved the cane but before he could use it, Carlito delivered him a Backcracker. Carlito pinned Sandman to win the match.[25]

The fourth match was a divas match between Candice Michelle and Melina for the WWE Women's Championship. Melina originally handled Candice thunderous beatings but afterwards Candice got the control of the match. She delivered Melina a Candy Wrapper and then pinned Melina to retain the Women's Championship. After the match, Melina started crying.[26]

The fifth match was between Umaga and Jeff Hardy for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Well, it was a destructive match for Hardy. He started the match performing death-defying moves over Umaga such as dropkicks, inverted mule kicks and a Whisper in the Wind. Hardy had a good chance to make the cover but he instead hit Umaga a Swanton Bomb. Umaga instead avoided the move and charged Hardy in the corner and furiously assaulted him. After that, Umaga delivered Hardy a Samoan Spike.[27]

The sixth match was between John Morrison and CM Punk for the ECW World Championship. Punk was able to get the victory as he was close of winning the match until Morrison went out of the ring. He took the belt and pretended to leave the match but Punk chased him and beat him up. Punk pushed Morrison to the ring. Before Punk could attempt a slingshot maneuver, Morrison hit him with both of his knees.[5]

The seventh match was a Texas Bullrope match between Randy Orton and Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes started the match with beating a series of elbows on Orton's head until Orton powered up and started beating Rhodes. Orton smashed his head several times with the cowbell and started beating him brutally. After a final shot to the head with a cowbell, Orton pinned Rhodes to win the match. Before Orton could hit Rhodes a running boot to the head, Dusty's son Cody made the save.[28]

The eighth match was a Triple Threat match between The Great Khali, Batista and Kane for the World Heavyweight Championship. Originally, Batista and Kane double-teamed Khali after trying to put him down. Kane delivered a Chokeslam and Batista delivered a Spinebuster to Khali at the same time over the announcers' table. While Khali was laying out, Batista and Kane fought inside the ring. Batista delivered Kane a Batista Bomb and then covered Kane. It was just 2 when Khali pulled Batista outside the ring and smashed his head into the steel ring steps. Khali went inside the ring and delivered Kane a Khali Bomb. Khali pinned Kane to retain the title.[4]

The main event was between John Cena and Bobby Lashley for the WWE Championship. These two athletes had a great match. Both men wrestled a great match together. Lashley performed a series of powerslams and spears to Cena. Cena delivered Lashley a Five Shuffle Knuckle but Lashley got up after the move. After a series of beatings, Cena delivered Lashley an FU from the top turnbuckle. Cena pinned Lashley after the Super FU to retain the title. After the match, the two shook hands and hugged each other.[3]
