Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules
Unofficial criteria: LaPella's unwritten rules
  • DYK evaluation includes:
  • Length - The Article should contain at least 1,500 characters in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles having more than 1,500 characters of prose still may be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
  • Verification - The DYK hook fact in the article needs an inline cite at the end of the sentence and the article in general should use inline, cited sources.
  • Date - The new article should be no more than five days old and the expanded article should be expanded at least fivefold with new text within the last five days.
  • Length
  • DYK qualifying characters: To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a JavaScript extension like User:Dr pda/prosesize.js (instructions on the talk page), a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools" ("Review" in Office 2007), then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. For Mac users, Apple has a Word counter widget available for Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Note: The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.
  • Lists: Proposed lists need 1,500+ characters of prose text. The listed items themselves are not counted as part the the 1,500 DYK qualifying characters
  • Verification
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    1. interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    2. short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    3. neutral,
    4. definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    5. always cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Please note that hooks are subject without notice to copyediting as they move to the main page. The nature of the DYK process makes it impractical to consult users over every such edit. In particular, hooks will be shortened if they are deemed too long: the 200-character limit is an outside limit, not a recommended length. Also, watch the suggestions page to ensure that no issues have been raised about your hook, because if you do not respond to issues raised your hook may not be featured at all.
  • Articles on living individuals must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Other issues
  • Pictures: Pictures accompanying the DYK hook should be:
    1. freely licensed suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely licensed pictures;
    2. suitable, attractive, and interesting at a 100x100px-wide resolution;
    3. already in the article; and
    4. relevant to the article.
  • Sounds: Sounds accompanying the DYK hook should have similar qualities to pictures, and should be formatted using {{DYK Listen|filename.ogg|Brief description}}

Sample DYK suggestion strings

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
  2. Nom with image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
    To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
    To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
    To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
    To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below:

{{subst:DYKsug
 | article   = Example
 | hook = ... that this [[article]] is an '''[[example]]''' ''(pictured)''?
 | creator   = Jimbo Wales
 | expander  =
 | nominator =
 | image     = Example.png
 | comment   =
}}
  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|May 7}} Thanks, ~~~~

Symbols

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
{{subst:DYKtick}} Yes No problems, ready for DYK
{{subst:DYKtickAGF}} Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
{{subst:DYK?}} Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYK?no}} Maybe DYK eligibility requires some additional work. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYKno}} No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem}} on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings at the bottom of this page.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

List of Dallas Stars head coaches

There are better hooks available, if a bit of research is done to add a few sentences and references to this article. For example, general manager Bob Gainey fired himself as head coach in 1996. See here and here and here and here and here. - Dravecky (talk) 13:05, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will certainly add that into the article. I will make the alternate hook that I think you suggested after I finish adding the Bob Gainey firing himself sentence. Thanks and happy new year. -- signed by SRE.K.Annoyomous.L.24 (spell my name backwards) at 01:51, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ALT1 ... that in the middle of the 1995–96 National Hockey League season, Bob Gainey, who was the general manager and the head coach of the Dallas Stars, an American professional ice hockey team based in Dallas, Texas, fired himself as the head coach and replaced himself with Ken Hitchcock, who won the Stanley Cup with the Stars in the 1998–99 National Hockey League season? Kind of long, but can be shortened. -- signed by SRE.K.Annoyomous.L.24 (spell my name backwards) at 02:06, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The inline cite for this statement in the article goes to an article which says Gainey fired himself as head coach in the 1995-96 season, not 1996-97. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 08:52, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All of the statements in the hook are directly and specifically cited in a reference in the article. In the particular case under discussion, the Globe and Mail, in reference 13, specifically states that the election was called as a direct result of the "in-and-out" scheme. • Source is fine. Quote checks out. It is using only one source, which should be changed to ensure that there is more diversity, however, right now there is not a problem because the source relies on a wide range of points of views and source material that are quoted through the single source. Perhaps some of the sources could be quoted directly (such as Houston Telegraph and Texas Register), but as of now there should not be a problem. Template:DYKsuggestion at 03:34, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

  • An interesting article, but unfortunately completely ineligible for DYK. This is not a new article; in fact, the initial version of the article is dated February 2008. On Dec 31, 2008 the article had a slight extension, but it was far less than a fivefold expansion (not even two-fold) compared with its previous version, dated Dec 13, 2008. Sorry, but completely ineligible for DYK according to WP:DYK#DYK rules. Nsk92 (talk) 04:39, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please look at the full history log of the article. The article was initially created in mainspace on February 27, 2008[1] and was gradually expanded in mainspace over the next 9 months. Here is the diff[2] comparing the current version with the version of December 13, 2008. The fact that the revision provided in your diff was prepared in user space does not make this a new article (because a previous version of the article already existed in mainspace), nor does it make it a 5x+ expansion compared with the previous operative version of December 13, 2008. Nsk92 (talk) 05:34, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oops, I take it back. I see that the article was moved from userspace into mainspace using an actual pagemove rather than traditional paste-in, so the history log portion I was looking at actually referred to the time when it was still a user subpage. So it does qualify as a new article. Nsk92 (talk) 05:43, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hmmm, now I am really confused. I don't see anything relevant in the move log but I do see a creation of a brand new manual redirect from a user subpage to the mainspace article on Dec 31[3]. Could someone else please take a look at this and try to figure out what exactly is going on? Nsk92 (talk) 05:57, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I thought this is the move log, which shows a move, and therefore I thought the article's previous version couldn't have existed in main space or it would have prevented the move. A move automatically creates a redirect from the "from" page to the "to" page. But others are certainly welcome to look. Art LaPella (talk) 06:05, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think you are right. I was looking for the record of this move by clicking on "View logs for this page" in the history page of the article itself, but for some reason the move does not show up there[4]. However, it does show in the log section for the Sandbox page, as you pointed out. So it seems that everything is Ok with the date of the article after all and that it was created in mainspace on Dec 31, 2008 and so the article is DYK eligible as a new article. No problem; I have added a citation of book by same author I quoted from the forum. You now have a source that fulfills your reliability requirement.

FYI, http:www.theaerodrome.com's forum contains informative dialogue by the authors of the Osprey series of books about World War I aviation, as well as other experts on the subject. So long as I consider the individual, I can find reliable info in these forums, as well as leads to books. Admittedly, I also find much to question or ignore.

Paul Verner

Template:DYKsuggestion at 17:27, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

  • I think it's interesting that he lived in exile (from the nationalists) and fought in the Spanish Civil War. I would go with: " that East German communist Paul Verner (pictured) spent years in exile and fought as a volunteer in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War?" I might even leave out the International Brigades. I don't think most people know what that is. You could even say he fled the nationalists in Germany and fought against Franco's nationalist forces in Spain. Interesting article. A lot of interesting history in there. The intro needs to be expanded to summarize the rest of the article.ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:53, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks. I think 'spent years in exile' is a good addition. I think we should keep International Brigades in the hook though, its rather notable. I have expanded the intro somewhat now. --Soman (talk) 08:45, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My worry is that saying East German is strange since we're talking about what is now Germany and what was Germany when he was fighting for Spain. Eastern Germany was inbetween. Can't they read the article to find out that he was an East German politician? I'm okay with adding he's a socialist too, although the "International" birgades is a bit of a tip off. Plus I like people going to the article to learn more. What do you think? Am I over complicating matters? My hook would need to be wikified properly. ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:16, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cape Grim massacre

Template:DYKsuggestion at 09:35, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Hook, citation, date and length OK.  Sandstein  07:41, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The fight over the women and the incident where four shepherds killed an undetermined number of aborigines (is it 6, 30, or "about 30"?) are not the same incident in the article nor is the hook fact clearly stated in a coherent way in the article. - Dravecky (talk) 08:24, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The fight over the woman was what sparked (caused) the massacre a few months later. The first sentence of the "Massacre" section of the article states that 30 aborigines were killed, and this is backed up by reference 7. --Bruce1eetalk 08:50, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am the writer of the article. Bruce Lee is correct. The fight over use/abuse of aboriginal women is what caused an escalation of violence leading to a massacre of 30 aborigines. The generally accepted view of most historians familiar with this incident (see Historical skepticism section) is that George Augustus Robinson's account that 30 people were killed in the massacre is accurate, this being an estimate based upon his investigation. One controversial historian disputes Robinson's account and estimate of number killed. I have detailed this in the Historical skepticism section to ensue the article has a neutral POV.--Takver (talk) 09:49, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have clarified the first paragraph in the article to state over 30 aborigines attacked, 30 killed, an unknown number escaping.--Takver (talk) 10:17, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, but my question about the timeline and the direct connection of the "fight over women" still stands. The article says the incident with the women took place in December 1827 and one aborigine was shot dead. Then at some point later, the tribe drove a flock of sheep over a cliff. Then in February, a "punitive expedition killed twelve Aborigines in response." Only after that do we get to the massacre but the detail emphasized is how the bodies were thrown over the same cliff the sheep had been driven over—making it seem far more about the sheep than the aboriginal women. I don't doubt that these events took place as described it's just that the article doesn't clearly and directly connect the original fight over the women to the massacre, rather it makes the massacre seem a bloody escalation in an terrible, ongoing genocide. - Dravecky (talk) 18:07, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But the events are connected. Reference 7, under the heading "Cape Grim Massacre", describes the sequence of events, beginning with the molestation of the aboriginal women and ending with the massacre of the 30 aborigines. --Bruce1eetalk 07:25, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Esix Snead

Template:DYKsuggestion at 21:54, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

  • I was trying to emphasize that he had a very substantial number of stolen bases in the minors, but never really made it as a major leaguer. The "but only" was intended in comparison to the number stolen in the minors not to minimize stealing 4 bases in 18 major league games, which would be about 35 in a full 162-game season. I wonder if "and" instead of "but only" loses that hookiness? Alansohn (talk) 21:58, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree that switching them around makes it read better. I do have a minor quibble, though; the word "but" still makes it read as though we're passing some sort of judgment on his accomplishments, IMHO. To me it reads like, "...Snead wasn't very good in the majors, but he did really well in the minors!" I think using "compared to" takes our opinion out of it entirely and lets the reader make up their own mind (lets them make the comparison for themselves, if you will). So my suggestion would be (ALT 4) ... that baseball player Esix Snead had four stolen bases in two brief appearances in the major leagues with the New York Mets compared to 507 in nine minor-league seasons? faithless (speak) 19:33, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

<outdent> I'm a little confused. The original hook says 4 stolen bases in 2 brief appearances. Then there is mention of 18 games? How many games did he play in? If he stole 4 bases in 2 appearances I don't see a quibble, I think we just go with the original hook and replace the word "but" with the word "and". It's clear he didn't make it in the majors if he's only had 2 appearances. Isn't the whole point that he's notable for a zillion minor league and a few in the major league, why are we but-butting? I would also take out the word brief. Why were his appearances brief? The original hook is fine assuming he had 2 appearances, we just replace but with and. We don't have to explain why his career in the majors was short. People can read the article.ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:28, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I guess the question is what is meant by "appearances". Snead was called up to the majors twice, getting into 17 games the first time and one the 2nd. Appearances here doesn't (or shouldn't, anyway) mean games played. But I am not sure that the number of call ups to the majors he had is really relevant to the hook. So it seems to me that the following would appropriately contrast his major and minor league stolen base record without introducing confusion as to what is meant by "appearances", because 4 stolen bases in 2 games would be a lot: (ALT 5)... that baseball player Esix Snead stole 507 bases in the minor-leagues but had just four stolen bases in the major leagues? Or else maybe something like: (ALT 6)... that baseball player Esix Snead had four stolen bases in 18 major league games, but stole 507 bases in nine minor-league seasons? • Length and date good, but I'm not sure that this is the hook (which is properly referenced, I should add) is the one I would go for on this article. I would have preferred a hook about the operation itself, something like:
  • If it's important that the fighter planes are drawn into the hook, then I would emphasise the fact that this DYK is about the military action by wording it thus:
I think one of the most important things about DYK is that the hook must be unique and interesting, and the fact that Operation Pleshet was an Israeli operation to capture Isdud is (IMO) neither. Feel free to use Alt2. The picture is also not the most important part of the hook, so if there is a style problem with having the word in the middle of the hook like that, feel free to ignore the picture. Upon inspection I notice the lasso claim is uncited and seems a bit of a stretch (it's perhaps not exactly a lasso action). I think a cited bit supporting a carniverous fungi DYK hook would be just fine. ChildofMidnight (talk) 09:08, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've added another (online) citation (+ link to PDF of article) for the lasso action, and removed quotes from hook. Sasata (talk) 17:45, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The citation does use the word lasso to describe the ring swelling action that traps prey (one of five methods) these nifty fungi use. It doesn't meet my definition of a lasso action (where's the throw?) but if you don't think carniverous fungi is exciting enough, I can live with it. :) Also, the introduction should be expanded to reflect teh article contents. It's kind of short.ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:55, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:DYKsuggestion at 16:59, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

  • The source doesn't make it quite clear to me that Jefferson was responsible. It says McMahon was entrusted with the seeds, and then "Jefferson insisted that these new discoveries were the property of the expedition and of the federal government, so McMahon was forced, perhaps rightfully so, to grow these novelties under restriction in a quarantine-like situation." But this seems compatible with the reading that once he'd been given the seeds, Jefferson set the quarantine requirement on him. It's possible I've missed something from another part of the source, though. Olaf Davis | Talk 09:52, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had thought "Beginning in 1806 McMahon was trusted with seeds and plants collected from the Lewis and Clark expedition" would be direct enough: I've added a second Monticello reference that also contains the statement. Coat of arms of Singapore

Template:DYKsuggestion at 02:24, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Length and date are OK, and the article is interesting, but I strongly recommend writing another hook. The current hook is incomprehensible (and hence uninteresting) to me as a layperson because I don't know what the Darjah Utama Temasek and the Sijil Kemuliaan are, or what an "achievement" of a coat of arms is (presumably heraldic jargon?). Also, the verb "uses" is in the singular despite having two subjects; it should be in the plural ("use"). Maybe the following would work?
"... that the Singapore coat of arms is reproduced in full on two national awards, the Darjah Utama Temasek and Sijil Kemuliaan?"
But that doesn't sound like a very interesting fact, either. (And the article would have to be adopted accordingly.)  Sandstein  20:17, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Your reference for the 1928 creation is a 1928 map, which only means it was assigned by 1928. Similarly, we know that the new alignment is shown as complete on a 1935 map, which means it was complete by then if PennDOH didn't jump the gun. But its non-presence on the 1934 map means that, if PennDOH never forgot to add a minor realignment, it was opened in either 1934 or 1935. Also, unless the 1934 and 1935 maps are more detailed than the 1930 map, there's no basis for assuming that it used Perryville Road. Finally, this is not interesting. Roads are realigned all the time, and there's no evidence here that this was anything but a normal realignment, built about eight years after the route was designated (and some more years after the road was first added to the state highway system as LR 311). --NE2 21:04, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What sentences in the article would support this statement? And frankly, I'm more comfortable with it being given as a quote because it's a very subjective statement otherwise ... who called them a voice of moderation (I didn't find that last word in the article, at least not using my browser's "find" function)? Or what was moderate about them compared to, say, other Ukrainian political parties of the era? Daniel Case (talk) 06:04, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They were certainly a moderate party when compared, as they are in the article, to the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 12:38, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a good summary of the party. For example, "UNDO supported constitutional democracy and the "organic development" of Ukrainian society that would prepare it for independence once the opportunity arose" and "UNDO was essentially democratic in nature, guided by varying amounts of Catholic, liberal, and socialist ideology." The alternative in western Ukraine was the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists.Faustian (talk) 16:14, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian sovereignty

Template:DYKsuggestion at 17:49, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

  • The article is very good and meets all our standards (the only minor thing it needs is work on the lead-in, which I mentioned at the talk page). But this hook seems a little dry. Are there any crazy little facts or anything that you could suggest as an alternate hook? —Politizer talk/contribs 23:22, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's not the most exciting subject ever. How about:
  • ALT1: ... that the sovereignty of Canada has become an increasingly relevant issue in recent years as Arctic ice in Northern Canada has melted?
or something along those lines. I never was great at grammar. Oh, and I'm working on the intro right now. Bsimmons666 (talk) Friend? 17:00, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think the new ALT is fine, and the lead-in section looks great now! Thanks, —Politizer talk/contribs 06:40, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I verified this a moment ago, but I just realized we will have to check it a little more closely...since it was originally made mostly by combining other articles, I think we'll have to see how much of it really is "new" content. I'll try to take a look sometime soon, but if any other reviewers are reading this it would also help to have a second opinion, as always. —Politizer talk/contribs 06:43, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
