Highest grossing Bengali films
The Bengali-language film industry is centered in the Tollygunge neighborhood of the city of Kolkata, West Bengal and has been known by the nickname Tollywood, a portmanteau of the words Tollygunge and Hollywood , since 1932. A 2014 report stated that while there were about 100 films created in Tollywood every year, fewer than ten percent were breaking even financially.

Revision as of 09:48, 25 November 2015

As per the merge consensus achieved to merge all Indian films into 1 article. No sources has been provided in article and would require refs to be added before merge. Lakun.patra (talk) 07:30, 24 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

 • Redirect - we already have bengali languaeg films listed and there is no sourced content to merge. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 15:21, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
 • Redirect - Seems like redirect is the way to go if the "merge from" article is unsourced. If the content can be sourced, then perhaps it could be merged. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 00:25, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah but IBTimes took the reference from Forbes. Forbes mentioned it like "earned 130 crores" they din't mention the word box office anywhere. As we have clearly discussed that the box office collection is what is taken into account. That 130 crore for Veeram is based on a huge confusion caused by Forbes which is Inclusive of Satellite Rights. Thus, I suggest you to update the list to [1]. Again to you're clarity Veeram 130 crores is inclusive of the satellite rights and distributor share, without it Veeram just minted 77.5 crores at the Box Office as the film ran for very few days as it shared screens with Jilla. There is a difference between earned and Grossed. Inclusive of all shares and rights the film earned 132 crores that's what Forbes told and Forbes article was not focused on Veeram Collection but on the top 100 celeb list on India. Ashikvc (talk) 14:27, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. I don't see on the Forbes source where it specifies the earnings as inclusive of satellite rights. Do you have a link to a different Forbes reference that states this? I also do not see on the IBTimes slideshow that the gross figures are not inclusive of satellite rights. If you can find reliable sources for each film that clearly discern between pure box office and total gross, will reconsider Cannolis (talk) 16:18, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Add Kanchana 2 gross which has a worldwide gross of 113 crores per the following sources

Metro Masti is used as the source of the 164 crore gross in the Nanban article, but it's not clear to me whether it is a reliable source or not. I also went with the lower 108 crore gross for Kanchana 2, because IBT is considered reliable. I'm not sure about andhraboxoffice. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:34, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Already done Someone has already taken care of this. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:36, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Scope

We need to establish the scope of "highest-grossing", that is, the specific cut-off for inclusion. Are we going by the top 10 in each language? We have 1 Bengali, 10 Hindi films, 11 Kannada films, 11 Malayalam, 9 Marathi, 13 Tamil, etc. The second thing we need to establish, is what the scope is for the summary box at the top of the article. Currently we have 20 examples. Also, since Hindi is almost always going to dominate this table, is it worth including? TheRedPenOfDoom, Bhuvannalla, thoughts? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:06, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I say top ten on each one with top being 15 I'd guess. It may just be easier to do an RFC and get votes across the board. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 11:47, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Versions

I think it's implied that the grosses are for all versions of the films (dubbed I mean). That seems to be way the other highest-grossing film articles work and for the top films here, that's the implication at least (I don't see any evidence that for example PK isn't including the Mandarin dubbing numbers). For a few, it looks like we only have the gross for the Tamil version which is incomplete but if that's what we have, it's what we have. For those, I put it as a note as it's not really that importance enough to change the charts, it's just an indication that the chart listing is the best source we have. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:32, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sholey

Should we include Sholay in the tables? A separate adjusted for inflation table? The 300 crore total wouldn't even be in the Hindi table at the moment and would be just above Enthiran and I think we'd be better served with older films adjusted for inflation if we have the numbers. It would really be a better representative sample of the top films of all time rather than just a listing here of current films (which I really doubt at what people would consider the "top" films of all time). If we do a separate table, it wouldn't be too hard, we can just use Template:INRConvert with the year parameter which would do its own adjustments (Sholay wouldn't do that as the sources provide a current estimate). -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:02, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have much faith in the INRConvert template. I've compared some of its results to online inflation calculators, and it's been off by a significant margin. For instance:
150 million (equivalent to 4.2 billion or US$50 million in 2023)
vs when I run it here I get 2,791,694,219.79

On the other hand, I don't know how much I trust the online inflation calcuators either.

When I run it here, I get 2,875,288,729.20

Anyhow, since we know that all the box values are estimates anyway, I don't know what value we're getting by adjusting estimates for inflation. Seems like we're inviting more Indian cinema box office headaches. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:24, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Baahubali: The Beginning should be labelled as a telugu movie

In the list of highest grossing Indian movies Baahubali: The Beginning has been listed as "Telugu and Tamil", while Enthiran, which falls in similar category is listed as just Tamil. Either of those need to be updated to be the same.

Telugu and Tamil are different languages, while movies in either of those languages have significant revenues in both the regions, each of those languages have their own film industries and have to be treated as different. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.169.171.33 (talk) 02:59, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is a ranking of the highest grossing Indian films which includes films from various languages based on the conservative global box office estimates as reported by reputable sources. There is no official tracking of figures and sites publishing data are frequently pressured to increase their estimates.[1]

During the 1940s cinema in South India accounted for nearly half of India's cinema halls[2] which had grown to 75% of all film revenues in India as of 2009.[3] Indian films have been screened in markets around the world since the early 20th century.[2] As of 2003, there are markets in over 90 countries where films from India are screened.[4] During the first decade of the 21st century, there was a steady rise in the ticket price, a tripling in the number of theaters and an increase in the number of prints of a film being released, which led to an large increase in the box office collections.[5]

The figures are not adjusted for inflation. Adjusted for inflation, estimates for the 1975 film Sholay reach as high as 3.00 billion (US$36 million).[6][7]

Madhava Prasad traces the origin of the term to a 1932 article in the American Cinematographer by Wilford E. Deming, an American engineer who apparently helped produce the first Indian sound picture. At this point, the Calcutta suburb of Tollygunge was the main centr of film production in India. Deming refers to the area as Tollywood, since it already boasted two studios with 'several more projected' (Prasad, 2003) 'Tolly', rhyming with 'Holly', got hinged to 'wood' in the Anglophone Indian imagination, and came to denote the Calcutta studios and, by extension, the local film industry. Prasad surmises: 'Once Tollywood was made possible by the fortuitous availability of a half-rhyme, it was easy to clone new Hollywood babies by simply replacing the first letter' (Prasad, 2003).From Cinema of India: Sarkar, Bhaskar (2008).
