Sobha Surendran is an Indian politician from the state of Kerala allied to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).Sobha is the first woman politician from Kerala BJP to hold a position at National level.[1] She has acted as the state president of BJP Mahila Morcha.She also serves on the board of directors of the Chennai Petroleum Corporation.[2][3][4]

Personal life

Sobha hails from Vadakkaanchery, Thrissur district, Kerala.[5]

Political career

She entered into social life through the RSS affiliate Balagokulam[6]She was the state president of the Mahila Morcha and was instrumental in forming units of the woman’s body in all the assembly constituencies of the state. It was after Shobha Surendran assuming office as the Mahila Morcha state president, that the organization gained mass appeal.[7] Sobha was the only woman in the party core committee and was the state general secretary of the party and has led several agitations for on behalf of the party in the state.[8][9]

Elections

She managed to put up a close contest and claimed and came second with 40,087 votes[10] Sobha as the party's state general secretary was contesting in both legislative assembly and general elections on a BJP ticket. Her track record in electoral politics has always been on the ascendency bettering the party vote share in each election she has been contesting.[11]

In 2019, Sobha contested from Attingal constituency and came third. She was defeated by Adoor Prakash of Indian National Congress.[12][13][12][13]

Controversies

Her reluctance to take up the post after being appointed state vice-president triggered a controversy within the Party.[14][15][16][17]and Sobha Surendran welcoming Muslim League to NDA during an interview had caused confusion in the BJP. Later, BJP state president K Surendran had rejected her statement.[18][19][20] In 2018, during the BJP's protest march against arrest of K. Surendran in Kannur, Sobha made aome provocative comments against the poice and threatened SP Yathish Chandra.[21] She was late booked by Kerala Police.[22]

Protests and struggles

Sobha Surendran was one of the key figure in the Sabarimala protests. She was later arrested by police during the protest.[23][24][25]Sobha Surendran fasted for 48 hours in support of the agitation by job aspirants figuring in the PSC rank lists in the Secretariat.[26][27]After that, Sobha met with the Kerala Governor and received assurances that he would act in favor of the job aspirants.[28][29][30]

In November 2020, Sobha alleged that the party president Surendran organised a political conspiracy against her, both personally and politically, to end her political career.[31] She later wrote a complaint letter to BJP national president JP Nadda and union home minister Amit Shah regarding this.[32]
