Built by St. Louis Car Co. in 1968 - 1969. R40A car order has two different versions of car appearance. One is the slant version, similar to R40, and the other is called "Modified", which distingushes it from the "Non-slanted version", which looks similar to R42.
R40A is similar to R40, but R40A has built in Air Conditioning units. In addition, centerline poles are arranged in diagonal patterns rather than the straight lines of the R42. R40A slant version was the last 100 cars to be built with the end slant. R40A Slant unit numbers: 4350-4459.
With the poorly conceived slant design, NYCTA had the last 100 R40 cars, now known as(R40M) built with a non-slant end. The end was redesigned by Sundberg-Ferar, and is identical to the one on the R42. R40M is called a modified or a straight R40, and is part of the R40A car order, from the 101st car to the 200th car of the order. R40M Unit Numbers: 4450-4549. They can be found on the Template:NYCS B Diamond, Template:NYCS N, Template:NYCS T, and Template:NYCS W and sometimes on the Template:NYCS B, Template:NYCS Q. They also provide extra service on the Template:NYCS D during and after games at Yankee Stadium.
In 1988-1989 the R40's were rebuilt by Sumitomo in Elmira Heights, New York.
