"My Lucky Day" is the 33rd episode of the American sitcom Scrubs. It originally aired as Episode 9 of Season 2 on December 5, 2002.

Plot
Elliot, having been cut off by her rich father, is in the process of moving out of her apartment. J.D. reflects on how much more fortunate he is than her. Later at the hospital, J.D. diagnoses a patient with necrotizing fasciitis against Dr. Cox's diagnosis, because J.D. had seen a special on the disease a few days before. When J.D. turns out to be right, and everyone is praising him for once, he rubs it in Dr. Cox's face until his mentor issues a challenge: There are two patients in the hospital who have identical conditions (Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura). Cox and J.D. will each take one and see who can fix the other first. J.D. is confident, but regardless checks Cox's patient's chart to see if they are doing the same thing. Despite their identical treatments, J.D.'s patient dies and Cox's lives, and J.D. cannot figure out why. Cox knows, but when J.D. explodes at him in anger, he refuses to tell. Finally, after J.D. languishes over the case, Cox reveals the hidden factor: Luck. Ultimately, he says, everything is ruled over by fate, luck or God. He also says that he was watching over J.D.'s patient all the time, because that's his job.

Meanwhile, Carla tries to get over her need to constantly criticize and give advice, Jordan goes into premature labor (but is quickly put right), and a patient (played by Alan Ruck, who starred in Bill Lawrence's previous series Spin City) with pancreatic cancer that Elliot said had eight months to live is suing her because he is going to live longer than that. Elliot realizes that she and the patient have the same issue: They both blame other people for their problems, although when she tells him this, he doesn't change his mind about suing her, in fact, it makes him feel better about doing so.

Continuity
* This is the only episode in which the Janitor hasn't appeared, making the day that much luckier for J.D. He was in it originally, but his scenes were cut for time. His cut scenes were inserted into the later episode My New Old Friend.
Cultural references
* The house in which J.D.'s flashback with his dad (played by John Ritter) occurs is also the house used in Ritter's comedy 8 Simple Rules.
