Randy Orton as the WWE Intercontinental Champion.

This is a chronological list of wrestlers that have been WWE Intercontinental Champion by ring name. The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a professional wrestling title. Created in 1979 as the secondary title for World Wrestling Entertainment, it is currently the secondary title on WWE's RAW brand.

The Intercontinental title's formation in 1979 came about when the first champion, Pat Patterson, was awarded the title as a result of defeating Ted DiBiase to win the WWF North American Championship and claiming to have defended the title in a tournament held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to be unified with a South American Championship.[1][2] The title went through numerous unification matches beginning in late 2001 until late 2002, when it was deactivated after it was unified with the World Heavyweight Championship.[3] However, the Intercontinental Championship was reactivated less than a year later in a battle royal.[4] There have been a total of 59 recognized champions who have had a combined 115 official reigns.

The championship has been known as:[2]

  • WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship (1979 - 1988)
  • WWF Intercontinental Championship (1988 - 2002)
  • WWE Intercontinental Championship (2002 – present)
