Kevin H. Knuth is a physicist in the Department of Physics at the University at Albany (SUNY), a former employee at NASA Ames Research Center in the Intelligent Systems Division, and a ufologist.

Education

Knuth has a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh (1988), a Master of Science (MS) in Physics from Montana State University (1990), and a PhD in Physics (Minor in Mathematics) from University of Minnesota (1995). Knuth also attended the Complex Systems Summer School at the Santa Fe Institute (1996).[1]

Academic career

Research interests

Knuth specializes in applying Bayesian and maximum entropy methods to the design of machine learning algorithms for data analysis applied to the physical sciences.[2][3] He has also researched extensively within the fields of autonomous experimental design[4][5][6] and question-asking machines.[7][8][9]

Appointments

Knuth's academic career spans several disciplines[1] where he has taught and researched in the fields of neuroscience (Departments of Speech & Hearing Sciences at Graduate School of the City University of New York; Departments of Otolaryngology & Neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine; Department of Physiology & Biophysics at Cornell University Medical Center; Center for Advanced Brain Imaging at Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research), astrophysics (Intelligent Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center), and physics (Departments of Physics and Informatics at University at Albany).

Knuth Lab

In his position as Associate Professor in the Departments of Physics and Informatics at University at Albany (SUNY),[1] Knuth runs a research lab specializing in the Foundations of Physics, Astrophysics, Bayesian Data Analysis, Source Separation and Maximum Entropy,[10][9] quantum information,[11] autonomous robotics,[8] and the search for and characterization of extrasolar planets.[12]

Knuth Algorithm

Knuth developed the Knuth Algorithm for histogram binning that is used in Wolfram Mathematica to calculate the "balance likelihood and prior probability of a piecewise uniform mode".[13] The algorithm was detailed in Knuth's 2019 paper, published in the journal Digital Signal Processing, on optimal data-based binning for histograms and histogram-based probability density models.[14]

Entropy journal

Knuth is Editor-in-Chief of Entropy,[15][16] an international, interdisciplinary, peer reviewed, open access scientific journal of entropy and information theory published monthly by MDPI,[17] a publisher of journals criticized for predatory practices and a lack of rigour.[18][19]

Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) research

Knuth has held an interest in UAP since childhood[20] and is known internationally for his willingness to publicly engage[21][22] with a topic that has historically been subject to ridicule.[23] In an article for Cosmos magazine, Knuth stated: “A scientist must consider all of the possible hypotheses that explain all of the data, and since little is known, the extraterrestrial hypothesis cannot yet be ruled out".[24] Knuth has also said that "many governments around the world have covered up" UFO encounters and that "we need to face the possibility that some of the strange flying objects [...] may indeed be visitors from afar."[25]

Knuth has published peer reviewed literature on UAP phenomena,[26] and serves as vice president of UAPx, a non-profit organization that conducts field research about UAP.[27][28] In 2022, Knuth appeared in a documentary film that followed a UAPx expedition to Catalina Island. The film, A Tear in the Sky, was released in May 2022,[29] and was described by film critic Jennie Kermode as having "appeal for UFO enthusiasts," but also having "production standards [that] are not the greatest" and that "the whole thing feel[s] like an amateur propaganda piece."[30] Knuth is also a member of the Harvard University Galileo Project and the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU). In reference to these groups, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Christopher Mellon stated, “Two serious groups of scientific researchers, the Galileo Project and the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU), have gathered able groups of scientists who are seeking to advance our collective understanding of UAP anomalies”.[31]

Writer Jason Colavito criticized Knuth's belief that the U.S. government is covering up encounters with aliens. According to Colavito, Knuth "leaned heavily on his credentials as a former NASA employee" but "provided no “insider” knowledge, nor any indication that he had firsthand evidence of a government conspiracy". Colavito wrote that "Knuth merely reiterates standard ufology claims, there is little to say except to note that he has committed a logical fallacy. He asks us to accept at face value the claim that “all of the data” about UFOs are linked to a singular phenomenon, namely spaceships from another world".[32]
