Harton Academy, formerly Harton Technology College or Harton Comprehensive School, is a mixed secondary and sixth form academy located in South Shields, South Tyneside, England; which has an overall judgement of ‘good’ by Ofsted.

In 2022, Ofsted rated Harton Academy as ‘requires improvement’. The former Executive Headteacher, Sir Ken Gibson, expressed his disagreement in a message to parents and carers, and through an article for the Shields Gazette. He stated that a number of factual accuracy checks had taken place, followed by a formal complaint to Ofsted.^[1][2]

In November 2023, The Illuminare Multi Academy Trust announced the appointment of a new Headteacher, Mr Jon Skurr (who previously led the Carlton Academy Trust, as Executive Headteacher). In January 2024, Mr Jon Skurr took over from the previous Acting Headteacher, Mr David Amos. Mr Skurr is the eighth Headteacher in the schools history.^{[3] [4]}

In February 2024, Ofsted rated Harton Academy’s overall effectiveness as ‘good’. The personal development and sixth-from provision were rated as ‘outstanding’. The quality of education, behaviour and attitudes and leadership and management were all rated as ‘good’.

The report states that the ‘standard of education and behaviour are high’ and that ‘pupils are courteous, responsible, polite and well behaved’. It is also recognised that the culture of safeguarding has been strengthened, which was the key area for improvement in the last inspection.

Through an article for the Shields Gazette, the Headteacher, Mr Jon Skurr, and the Chief Executive Officer, Sir Ken Gibson; stated they were ‘delighted’ with the report. Within the article, it is stated that the academy’s goal is to is to provide a ‘world-class education offer’ and to achieve ‘outstanding across the board’, in it’s next Ofsted inspection.^[5]

Harton Technology College (1996-2017)

Harton was rated as 'outstanding' by Ofsted in 2006 and 2013,^[6] received 3 Government Achievement awards, featured in the 'top 50 most improved specialist schools' in the UK and identified as one of twelve outstanding schools serving disadvantaged communities.^[7]

In 2010, £25,000,000 worth of construction was completed^[8] on a new 6th form block and the refurbishment of the 1936 block. In 2015, the swimming pool was redeveloped at the cost of £400,000.^[9]

In 2011, the DfE awarded Harton with Teaching School status, allowing the academy to lead training and professional development of staff.^[10]

In 2017, Harton Technology College was granted multi-academy status by the DfE and is now known as Harton Academy, part of The Illuminare Multi Academy Trust.^[11]
