Building owner Tom Flanagan sent a statement to KFDM/Fox 4:

"For years we have worked to save Beaumont's historical treasures from the wrecking ball. We are heartbroken for the loss of the Gilbert Building, which had plans of becoming upscale lofts. We are amazed and encouraged by the professionalism and bravery of the Beaumont Fire Dept. which is inspiring. We have been working with the city on the issue of the increasing homelessness and vandals who have a pattern of setting fires downtown. This is an unnecessary case of vandalism."
