Depok (Sundanese: ᮓᮦᮕᮧᮊ᮪) is a city in West Java Province. The city is located just south of Jakarta, which is between Jakarta and Bogor. Formerly Depok was a sub-district within Bogor Regency, which later received city status on April 27, 1999.
History
District Depok
Starting at the end of the 17th century, a Dutch merchant named Cornelis Chastelein purchased land in Depok covering an area of 12.44 km². With a price of 2.4 Million IDR and the status of the land was private land or independent of the Dutch East Indies.
- Depok District, consisting of 11 sub-districts, namely: Depok, Depok Jaya, Pancoran Mas, Mampang, Rangkapan Jaya, Rangkapan Jaya Baru, Beji, Kemiri Muka, Pondok Cina, Tanah Baru, Kukusan.
Based on Government Regulation Number 43 of 1981, Depok District was expanded, the goal is to increase the status of the sub-district to administrative city.[1] The results of the expansion include :
- Beji District, consists of 5 sub-districts, namely: Beji, Kemiri Muka, Pondok Cina, Tanah Baru, Kukusan.
- Pancoran Mas District, consists of 6 sub-districts, namely: Pancoran Mas, Depok, Depok Jaya, Mampang, Rangkapan Jaya, Rangkapan Jaya Baru.
Administrative City of Depok
In 1982, the Central Government formed the Administrative City of Depok by including Sukmajaya District which was previously the Bogor Regency area. At that time, Depok became the fourth Administrative City in West Java after Cimahi, Tasikmalaya and Tangerang.
The inauguration of the establishment of the Administrative City of Depok was carried out by the Minister of Home Affairs Amir Machmud as well as the inauguration of the first Administrative Mayor, Mochammad Rukasah Suradimadja by the Governor of West Java Aang Kunaefi. In early 1999, the Administrative City of Depok was divided and all desa changed their status to kelurahan.
- Beji District, consists of 6 sub-districts, namely: Beji, Beji Timur, Pondok Cina, Kemiri Muka, Kukusan, Tanah Baru.
- Pancoran Mas District, consists of 6 sub-districts, namely: Pancoran Mas, Depok, Depok Jaya, Mampang, Rangkapan Jaya, Rangkapan Jaya Baru.
- Sukmajaya District, consists of 11 sub-districts, namely: Sukmajaya, Tirtajaya, Mekarjaya, Abadijaya, Baktijaya, Cisalak, Cilodong, Sukamaju, Kalibaru, Kalimulya, Jatimulya.
Depok City
With the rapid development and demands of community aspirations, on April 27 1999 the City of Depok was formed consisting of 3 sub-districts and added with parts of the Bogor Regency, namely:
- Cimanggis District
- Limo District
- Sawangan District
- And plus 5 sub-districts from Bojong Gede District.
After several areas in Bogor Regency chose to join the City of Depok according to Law Number 15 of 1999, Depok City area consists of 6 districts including:
- Beji District consists of 6 sub-districts, namely: Beji, Beji Timur, Pondok Cina, Kemiri Muka, Kukusan, Tanah Baru.
- Cimanggis District, consists of 13 sub-districts, namely: Cisalak Pasar, Pasir Gunung Selatan, Tugu, Mekarsari, Curug, Harjamukti, Tapos, Cilangkap, Sukatani, Sukamaju Baru, Jatijajar, Cimpaeun, Leuwinanggung.
- Limo District, consists of 8 sub-districts, namely: Limo, Meruyung, Krukut, Grogol, Cinere, Gandul, Pangkalan Jati, Pangkalan Jati Baru.
- Pancoran Mas District, consists of 11 sub-districts, namely: Pancoran Mas, Depok, Depok Jaya, Mampang, Rangkapan Jaya, Rangkapan Jaya Baru, Cipayung, Cipayung Jaya, Ratu Jaya, Bojong Pondok, Pondok Jaya.
- Sawangan District, consists of 14 sub-districts, namely: Sawangan Lama, Sawangan Baru, Cinangka, Kedaung, Pengasinan, Bedahan, Pasir Putih, Bojongsari Lama, Bojongsari Baru, Serua, Pondok Petir, Curug, Duren Seribu, Duren Mekar.
- Sukmajaya District, consists of 11 sub-districts, namely: Sukmajaya, Tirtajaya, Mekarjaya, Abadijaya, Baktijaya, Cisalak, Cilodong, Sukamaju, Kalibaru, Kalimulya, Jatimulya.
District Expansion
In 2007, the District in Depok was divided. The complete names of district and sub-districts resulting from the division were ratified by DPRD Depok, as follows:
- Beji District covers the work areas: Beji, Beji Timur, Kemiri Muka, Pondok Cina, Kukusan and Tanah Baru.
- Bojongsari District covers the working areas: Bojongsari Lama, Bojongsari Baru, Serua, Pondok Petir, Curug, Duren Mekar and Duren Seribu.
- Cilodong District covers the work areas: Cilodong, Sukamaju, Kalibaru, Kalimulya and Jatimulya.
- Cimanggis District covers the working areas: Cisalak Pasar, Mekarsari, Tugu, Pasir Gunung Selatan, Harjamukti and Curug.
- Cinere District covers the work areas: Cinere, Gandul, Pangkalan Jati and Pangkalan Jati Baru Village.
- Cipayung District covers the working areas: Cipayung, Cipayung Jaya, Ratu Jaya, Bojong Pondok Terong and Pondok Jaya.
- Limo District covers the working areas: Limo, Meruyung, Grogol and Krukut.
- Pancoran Mas District covers the work area: Pancoran Mas, Depok, Depok Jaya, Mampang, Rangkapan Jayan and Rangkapan Jaya Baru.
- Sawangan District covers the work areas: Sawangan Lama, Sawangan Baru, Kedaung, Cinangka, Bedahan, Pengasinan and Pasir Putih.
- Sukmajaya District covers the work areas: Sukmajaya, Mekarjaya, Baktijaya, Abadijaya, Tirtajaya and Cisalak.
- Tapos District covers the work areas: Tapos, Leuwinanggung, Sukatani, Sukamaju Baru, Jatijajar, Cilangkap and Cimpaeun.

Culture
Shopping and Dining
Depok has a growing eclectic collection of malls and traditional markets. Older malls or other notable shopping centers include Mall Depok, Depok Plaza, and SixtyOne Building, and Depok ITC. Depok has many local restaurants and has wide presence of international chains such as A&W Restaurant, Burger King, CFC, Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts.
Modern-day landmarks that were once known as Depok's primary shopping centers include Ramanda (now an autoshop plus education centre), Hero Supermarket (now Index Home Furnishings) etc. There are many shopping centers in Depok, such as

Traditional markets include Pasar Depok Baru, Pasar Depok Lama (short: Pasar Lama), Pasar Kemiri (originally expanded to facilitate the move of Pasar Lama traders), Pasar PAL, Pasar Agung, Pasar Musi, Pasar Cisalak, and Pasar Majapahit.
Parks
Alun Alun Depok or Depok Square is equipped with various sports facilities such as a basketball court, futsal, skateboard, wall climbing, BMX arena, children's playground, fish pond, fountain, and others.[6] Godongijo Conservation and Education Park is located in Depok. The park provides children and teachers alike the ability to get up close and personal with nature. There are also other children's amusement parks in the city such as Depok Fantasi Waterpark, Taman Pemuda Pratama, and Pondok Zidane.

These are all along Margonda Raya and Cinere Raya, the two main roads that pass through Depok.

Public Transportation

Angkot is the major means of public transportation in Depok. Go-Jek and Grab and taxicabs are easily available. Depok is connected to other areas of greater Jakarta by commuter train, TransJakarta & Kopaja buses. Depok Lama, Depok Baru Station, Universitas Indonesia Station, Pondok Cina Station and Citayam Station of KRL Jabodetabek commuter train service located within Depok. Commuter train is widely used to travel Jakarta city center and other parts of Greater Jakarta, but very crowded during peak hours.
Air
Depok is served by Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport. Pondok Cabe Airport is located at Depok in borders South Tangerang, but doesn't have regular scheduled air service .
