In April 2019, Columbia Pictures announced a musical retelling of "Cinderella", with Kay Cannon writing and directing.[13] The original idea for the film came from James Corden, who produced the film through Fulwell 73 with Leo Pearlman, Jonathan Kadin, and Shannon McIntosh.[3]

Principal photography began in February 2020[14] at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom.[15] Filming was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[15] Production resumed in August 2020[16] and concluded in September.[17]

In April 2019, it was announced that Camila Cabello was working on the music for the film.[3] In October, 2020, Idina Menzel confirmed that "[she and Camila] both have original songs as well."[20] In its 2020 interim report, music publisher Hipgnosis Songs Fund revealed that it had placed three songs in the soundtrack for Cinderella: "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" by Beyoncé, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics, and "Good Times" by Chic.[21] In August 2, 2021, it was announced by the director that the soundtrack will be released digitally on September 3, 2021.[22][23]

The soundtrack is set to be released by Epic Records in the United States, Columbia Records in the United Kingdom,[24] and Sony Music Entertainment labels globally. "Million to One", performed by Camila Cabello, was released on July 21, 2021 as the lead single of the soundtrack.[18] "Somebody to Love", performed by Nicholas Galitzine, was released on August 3, 2021[19] as instant grant, along with the pre-order for the album.[25]

Marketing

As part of the film's marketing, Amazon Prime Video partnered with Mercedes-Benz in August 2021.[26] On August 9, Japanese shoes brand Onitsuka Tiger announced the release of a limited edition sneakers created in collaboration with Cinderella.[27] On August 11, hair brand John Frieda announced a collaboration with Cinderella.[28]

Release

This film is scheduled to be released on September 3, 2021.[29] In June 2019, Sony scheduled the film for release February 5, 2021.[30] In January 2021, the release date was pushed back to July 16, 2021.[31] In May 2021, Sony cancelled the film's theatrical debut and announced that the film had been bought by Amazon Studios except China, Sony would also retain home entertainment and linear television rights to the film.[2][32]

Reception

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 40% based on 25 reviews, with an average rating of 4.4/10.[33] On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 47 out of 100 based on 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[34]
