"Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa" is the third episode of the American television series The Book of Boba Fett, following Boba Fett and Fennec Shand attempting to gain control of Jabba the Hutt's crime empire after his death in Return of the Jedi (1983). The episode is set in the Star Wars universe, sharing continuity with The Mandalorian and other spin-offs such as Ahsoka. It was written by Jon Favreau and directed by Robert Rodriguez.

Temuera Morrison reprises his role as Fett from the second season of The Mandalorian, with Ming-Na Wen joining him as Fennec Shand. Matt Berry, David Pasquesi, Sophie Thatcher, Jordan Bolger, Stephen Root, and Danny Trejo also star. Filming began in November 2020 and concluded in June 2021. "Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa" was released on Disney+ on January 12, 2022 to mixed reviews.

Plot

Boba Fett plans how he can maintain Jabba the Hutt's empire. A water-monger named Lortha Peel asks Fett to punish a gang of cyborgs stealing his water in Mos Espa, claiming that the citizens do not respect him yet. Upon seeing that the gang has no work, Fett employs the cyborgs as enforcers while paying Peel. In the bacta, Fett recalls when he sought the toll from the Pykes. On his return to the Tusken camp, he found the tribe destroyed by the Nikto gang. In the present, Fett is attacked by Krrsantan, but the Wookiee is held off and captured in the basement by his guards. The Twins then arrive, bringing a rancor as a gift and promising to leave Tatooine because they were misled by Mayor Shaiz. After releasing Krrsantan, Fett enlists the rancor keeper to train the beast. Fett, Shand, and the cyborg guards go to Mos Espa to question Shaiz, but the mayor is absent and his majordomo flees. A speeder chase ensues and the cyborgs corner the majordomo, who asserts that Shaiz is working with the Pykes. One of the cyborgs reports that more Pykes are arriving in Mos Espa, and Fett decides to prepare for war.

The episode was directed by Robert Rodriguez, who also voices Mok Shaiz for the series.[1] It was written by the series showrunner Jon Favreau.[2]

Casting

Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen reprise their roles from The Mandalorian as Boba Fett and Fennec Shand, respectively.[3][4][5] Matt Berry and David Pasquesi return as their recurring characters 8D8 and Mok Shaiz's majordomo.[6] Carey Jones plays Black Krrsantan, a Wookie bounty hunter, who previously appeared in the Marvel Comics series, Star Wars: Darth Vader and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra.[7] Jordan Bolger, Sophie Thatcher, Stephen Root, and Danny Trejo appear in guest roles, as Skad, Drash, Lortha Peel, and a rancor trainer, respectively.[8][6]

Music

Joseph Shirley composed the musical score for the episode, while Ludwig Göransson composed the main theme of the series. The featured tracks were released on January 21, 2022, in the first volume of the season one soundtrack.[9]

Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes the episode has an approval rating of 59% based on reviews from 17 critics, with an average rating of 6.60/10. The website's critics consensus states, "The Streets of Mos Espa" sends The Book of Boba Fett on a journey that's frustratingly paced -- but not without its share of fun moments".[10]
