On May 15, 2012, Miller was involved in an altercation with [[Toronto Blue Jays]] third baseman [[Brett Lawrie]] when Miller appeared to miss two consecutive calls at the end of a close game. After the first pitch, Lawrie began to run to first base, believing to have walked. Miller called the pitch a strike, despite replays showing the ball to be outside of the strike zone. Miller promptly called the next pitch a strike, as well. Once again, the pitch was outside the strike zone. Lawrie proceeded to yell at Miller, at which point Miller ejected Lawrie from the game. Lawrie threw his helmet at the ground and it bounced up and hit Miller.
