Warlock is a 1979 board game published by Future and Fantasy Games.
Gameplay[edit]
Warlock is a fantasy combat game for 2-4 players in which wizards use mana to conjure creatures and cast spells, each trying to slay the other wizards.[1] The game was designed by Rich Slabbekoorn, who was inspired by the "Warlock" stories of Larry Niven.[2] Artwork on the cover and rulebook was by William Douglas Freeman.[3]
The game components are:
- rule book with combat table
- 8.5" x 12" hex grid
- sheet of spells
- 5" x 6" sheet of 90 counters representing the two warlocks, conjured creatures and spell effects[3]
Each warlock tries to slay the other warlocks with a variety of spells, including those that conjure creatures to either defend the wizard casting the spell, attack other conjured creatures, or attack the opposing wizard.[3]
Reception[edit]
Steve Jackson reviewed Warlock in The Space Gamer No. 28.[1] Jackson commented that "Taken on its own merits, Warlock would be a good introductory game for younger folk. More experienced gamers will exhaust its possibilities very quickly indeed."[1]
