A film (British English) – also called a movie (American English), motion picture, moving picture, picture, photoplay or (slang) flick – is a work of visual art that simulates experiences and otherwise communicates ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty, or atmosphere through the use of moving images. These images are generally accompanied by sound and, more rarely, other sensory stimulations. The word "cinema", short for cinematography, is often used to refer to filmmaking and the film industry, and the art form that is the result of it. (Full article...)

Love Actually is a 2003 romantic comedy film written and directed by Richard Curtis. The Christmas film features an ensemble cast, composed predominantly of British actors, many of whom had worked with Curtis in previous projects. An international co-production of the United Kingdom, United States, and France, it was mostly filmed on-location in London. The film delves into different aspects of love as shown through 10 separate stories involving a variety of individuals, many of whom are interlinked as the plot progresses. The story begins five weeks before Christmas and is played out in a weekly countdown until the holiday, followed by an epilogue that takes place in the New Year.

The film was released in the US on 14 November 2003 and a week later in the UK during its theatrical run. Love Actually was a box-office success, grossing $245 million worldwide on a budget of $40 million. Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (born July 3, 1962) is an American actor and producer. Regarded as a Hollywood icon, he has received various accolades, including an Honorary Palme d'Or and three Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for four Academy Awards. His films have grossed over $5 billion in North America and over $12 billion worldwide, placing him among the highest-grossing actors of all time. Cruise holds the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive $100-million-grossing movies, a feat that was achieved during the period of 2012 to 2018. One of the most bankable stars, he is consistently one of the world's highest-paid actors.

Cruise began acting in the early 1980s and made his breakthrough with leading roles in the comedy Risky Business (1983) and the action film Top Gun (1986). Critical acclaim came with his roles in the dramas The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989). For his portrayal of Ron Kovic in the latter, he won a Golden Globe Award and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. As a leading Hollywood star in the 1990s, he starred in commercially successful films, including the drama A Few Good Men (1992), the thriller The Firm (1993), the horror film Interview with the Vampire (1994), and the romance Jerry Maguire (1996). Grace Kelly in 1955

American actress Grace Kelly (1929–1982) made her screen debut in the televised play "Old Lady Robbins" (1948) on the anthology series Kraft Television Theatre. The following year, Kelly made her Broadway debut playing Bertha in The Father. In 1950, she appeared on numerous television anthology series, including The Philco Television Playhouse, Studio One, The Clock, The Web, and Danger. Kelly played Helen Pettigrew in the television play "Berkeley Square" on the Prudential Family Playhouse (1951). In 1952, she portrayed Dulcinea in the drama "Don Quixote" on the anthology series CBS Television Workshop, and also starred in a number of other anthology series, including Hallmark Hall of Fame, Lux Video Theatre, and Suspense.

Kelly's film debut was a minor role in the 1951 drama Fourteen Hours. She followed this with an appearance in the western High Noon with Gary Cooper. For her performance as Linda Nortley in John Ford's Mogambo, she received the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress, and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 1954, she starred in the Alfred Hitchcock-directed thrillers Dial M for Murder, with Ray Milland, and Rear Window, with James Stewart. In the same year, she portrayed the long-suffering wife of an alcoholic actor, played by Bing Crosby, in The Country Girl (1954), for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama in 1955. Sense and Sensibility is a 1995 British period drama film directed by Ang Lee. Actress Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay, which is based on the 1811 novel of the same name by English author Jane Austen. Thompson and Kate Winslet starred as the Dashwood sisters among a large ensemble cast. Columbia Pictures, a Sony Pictures Entertainment subsidiary, produced and released the film. Sense and Sensibility was released to cinemas on 15 December 1995, and earned a total worldwide gross of $134,582,776. Based on 67 reviews from film critics, the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes has calculated Sense and Sensibility's approval rating to be 97%.

Sense and Sensibility received accolades for the main cast's performances and Thompson's screenwriting. The adaptation received seven Academy Award nominations including the Academy Award for Best Picture, though the sole win that night was for the Academy Award for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), the only time a person has earned Oscars for both acting and writing. Thompson's screenwriting collected a further eleven accolades, including those given by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Golden Globe Awards, and London Critics Circle. At the 49th British Academy Film Awards, Sense and Sensibility garnered twelve BAFTA nominations, ultimately coming away with three awards including the BAFTA Award for Best Film; Thompson and Winslet won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, respectively. Mckenna Grace is an American actress who has appeared in films, television series, video games, and narrative podcasts. A 2022 Yahoo! Entertainment article referred to her as "one of the most successful and prolific child actors of her generation", with over 70 credits by that point. Having wanted to act since age four, Grace secured her first part in a commercial at five years old. She made her onscreen debut in Disney XD's sitcom Crash & Bernstein (2012–2014), while she had her first film role in Goodbye World (2013). She subsequently appeared in several films and television shows, including The Young and the Restless (2013–2015), The Vampire Diaries (2015), Mr. Church (2016), Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Designated Survivor (2016–2019), and Fuller House (2016–2020).

In 2017, Grace garnered global recognition for her role as an intellectually gifted seven-year-old in the drama film Gifted, for which she received a nomination for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards for Best Young Performer. She also appeared in the 2017 films How to Be a Latin Lover, Amityville: The Awakening, and I, Tonya. The following year, Grace portrayed a murderous girl in The Bad Seed, a psychic middle child in The Haunting of Hill House, the younger version of the titular character in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and a child prodigy in Young Sheldon. She played the lattermost role until 2023. Grace appeared in three films released in 2019. Her first was Captain Marvel, in which she portrayed a 13-year-old version of the titular character. Frida is a 2002 biographical film about Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, directed by Julie Taymor. It was adapted from Hayden Herrera's 1983 Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo by Clancy Sigal, Diane Lake, Gregory Nava and Anna Thomas. Actress Salma Hayek was cast as Kahlo, while Alfred Molina portrays her husband Diego Rivera. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, 2002, where it competed for the Golden Lion. Frida then went on to play at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Chicago International Film Festivals. The film received a limited release in the United States from October 25, 2002. As of October 2012, Frida has earned over $56 million in its total worldwide gross at the box office.

Frida garnered various awards and nominations following its release, with most of the nominations recognising Hayek and Molina's performances, composer Elliot Goldenthal's score and the hair and makeup teams. The film received six nominations from the 75th Academy Awards and came away with two awards for Best Makeup and Best Original Score respectively. The American Film Institute placed Frida on their Top Ten Movies of the Year list, as did the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. The film received four nominations from the British Academy Film Awards and Judy Chin, Beatrice DeAlba, John E. Jackson and Regina Reyes went on to win the BAFTA Award for Best Makeup and Hair. American actress Jennifer Aniston made her film debut in the 1988 comic science fiction film Mac and Me in an uncredited role of a dancer. Two years later, she made her television debut in the series Molloy (1990) followed that year by a starring role in Ferris Bueller, a television adaptation of the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off; both series were cancelled in their first seasons. In 1993, she had her first major film role in the horror comedy Leprechaun. She was offered a spot as a featured player on Saturday Night Live but turned this down to accept a starring role on the NBC television sitcom Friends (1994–2004).

Aniston gained worldwide recognition for portraying Rachel Green on Friends, a role which earned her five Primetime Emmy Award nominations (two for Supporting Actress, three for Lead Actress), winning one for Lead Actress and also a Golden Globe. During its ninth and tenth seasons, Aniston became one of the highest-paid television actors of all time, earning $1 million for each episode. In 2003, Aniston appeared in the comedy Bruce Almighty, opposite Jim Carrey. The film grossed $484 million worldwide, making it Aniston's biggest commercial success in film. James Franco is an American actor and filmmaker. He began acting on television, guest-starring in Pacific Blue (1997). He landed his breakthrough role in the comedy-drama television series Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000). After his film debut in Never Been Kissed (1999), Franco won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film and was nominated for Screen Actors Guild Award and Primetime Emmy Award in the same categories for playing the eponymous actor in the 2001 television biopic James Dean. He went on to play Harry Osborn in the superhero film Spider-Man (2002), and reprised the role in its sequels Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). For the last of the three, he garnered a nomination for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor. His only screen appearance of 2003 was in the ballet film The Company. Franco directed and starred in the comedy The Ape (2005).

After playing one of the title roles in the romantic drama Tristan & Isolde (2006), Franco starred in the Tony Bill-directed war drama Flyboys (2006). Two years later, he played against type in the action-comedy film Pineapple Express, and earned critical acclaim for portraying Scott Smith in the biographical film Milk alongside Sean Penn. For the former, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Comedy. Franco portrayed the trapped canyoneer Aron Ralston in 127 Hours (2010), a survival drama, which earned him nominations for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and Golden Globe Award, all for Best Actor. Vidya in 2023

Vidya Balan is an Indian actress known for her work in Hindi films. She made her acting debut in 1995 with the sitcom Hum Paanch, following which she made several unsuccessful attempts at a film career. Vidya then appeared in music videos for Euphoria, Pankaj Udhas, and Shubha Mudgal all directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She had her first film release with a leading role in Goutam Halder's Bengali film Bhalo Theko (2003). In 2005, she played the heroine in Sarkar's Parineeta, an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel of the same name. Vidya won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for the film. Rajkumar Hirani's Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), a successful comedy sequel, saw her play a radio jockey opposite Sanjay Dutt.

Vidya had five releases in 2007. She played a variety of roles in them, including a woman suffering from multiple sclerosis in Mani Ratnam's semi-biographical drama Guru, a single mother in the comedy Heyy Babyy, and a dissociative identity disorder patient in the psychological thriller Bhool Bhulaiyaa. All three films were commercially successful and established her as a leading lady. The following year, she starred opposite Ajay Devgan in the drama Halla Bol (2008) and Shahid Kapoor in the romantic comedy Kismat Konnection (2008), but both failed to find a wide audience. Woody Harrelson is an American actor who made his film debut as an uncredited extra in Harper Valley PTA (1978). His breakthrough role was as bartender Woody Boyd on the NBC sitcom Cheers (1985–1993), which garnered Harrelson a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series from a total of five nominations. He would later reprise the character in other television shows, such as Frasier and The Simpsons. In 1992, Harrelson starred opposite Wesley Snipes in White Men Can't Jump. He then appeared in the Oliver Stone-directed Natural Born Killers (1994) alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr. For his performance as free-speech activist Larry Flynt in The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and an Academy Award for Best Actor. He next appeared in The Thin Red Line (1998).

From 1999 to 2000, Harrelson acted in the Broadway revival of The Rainmaker. He then had a minor role in the 2003 comedy Anger Management. From 2005 to 2006, Harrelson played Rev. Shannon in a London production of Tennessee Williams' The Night of the Iguana. His next film role was as hit-man Carson Wells in the Coen brothers-directed No Country for Old Men (2007), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. That year he also portrayed physician Robert O. Wilson in the documentary Nanking. In 2008, Harrelson starred opposite Will Ferrell in Semi-Pro and Will Smith in Seven Pounds. His work in The Messenger (2009) garnered him an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male. The Hours is a 2002 drama film directed by Stephen Daldry and written by David Hare. The screenplay is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Cunningham, which follows three generations of women whose lives are affected by the novel Mrs Dalloway: Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman), as she writes the novel in 1923, a suicidal 1950s housewife (Julianne Moore), and a modern-day woman (Meryl Streep) preparing a party for her poet friend, Richard (Ed Harris). The film premiered on December 25, 2002, followed by a limited theatrical release on December 27, and then went on a wide release in North America on January 14, 2003. The Hours grossed a worldwide box office total of over $108 million, against an estimated budget of $25 million.

The Hours garnered various awards and nominations following its release, with nominations ranging from recognition of the film itself to Hare's screenplay, Philip Glass' score and the cast's acting performances, particularly those of Kidman, Moore and Streep. The film received nine nominations at the 75th Academy Awards; Kidman won the Best Actress award at the ceremony. At the 56th British Academy Film Awards, The Hours won two awards from eleven nominations. It earned seven nominations at the 60th Golden Globe Awards, and went on to win the Best Drama Film and Best Actress accolades. It was also named Best Foreign Feature Film at the Amanda Awards. English actress Kate Winslet made her screen debut at age fifteen in the BBC series Dark Season (1991). Following more television appearances in the UK, she made her film debut with the leading role of murderess Juliet Hulme in Peter Jackson's crime film Heavenly Creatures (1994). Winslet gained wider recognition for playing Marianne Dashwood in a 1995 film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, for which she received an Academy Award nomination and won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress. The same year, she appeared in the Royal Exchange Theatre's production of Joe Orton's farce What the Butler Saw. In 1997, she starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron's romance Titanic, which emerged as the highest-grossing film of all time to that point; it established her as a star and earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination.

Winslet followed Titanic with roles in small-scale period dramas which were critically acclaimed but not widely seen. She played a disillusioned single mother in Hideous Kinky (1998), an Australian woman brainwashed by a religious cult in Holy Smoke! (1999), a sexually repressed laundress in Quills (2000), and the novelist Iris Murdoch in Iris (2001). For the last of these, she received her third Academy Award nomination. Winslet was awarded a Grammy Award for narrating a short story in the children's audiobook Listen to the Storyteller (1999), and she sang the single "What If" for the 2001 animated film Christmas Carol: The Movie. The 2004 science fiction romance Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind marked one of her first roles set in contemporary times, and Winslet followed it by playing Sylvia Llewelyn Davies in Finding Neverland (2004) and an unhappy housewife in Little Children (2006). She received Academy Award nominations for the first and last of these, and went on to star alongside Cameron Diaz in the commercially successful romantic comedy The Holiday (2006).
