"Looking for a New Love" is a song by American singer Jody Watley from her debut studio album, Jody Watley (1987), released as her debut solo single. Written by André Cymone and Watley, and produced by Cymone and David Z., the song was issued as the lead single from the Jody Watley album on January 6, 1987, by MCA Records. One of the song's key phrases became a popular saying: "Hasta la vista, baby". It wound up on innumerable answering machines and was used by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1991 film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. In 2005, Watley re-recorded and released the song, titled "Looking for a New Love '05", in various remixes.

"Looking for a New Love" was a commercial success, topping the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart, peaking at No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and reaching No. 13 on both the Australian Kent Music Report chart and the UK Singles Chart. It also topped Billboard's Hot Black Singles and Hot Dance Club Play charts. Billboard ranked "Looking for a New Love" as the 16th most popular single of 1987. In 1988, the song was nominated for two Soul Train Music Awards for Best R&B/Soul Single – Female and Best R&B/Soul or Rap Music Video. Watley was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards.

Background and recording[edit]

While listening to a tape of instrumental songs given to her by producer André Cymone, Watley reflected on a recent sour romantic breakup. Fusing her own feelings of "I'll show you" with the feel of the instrumental, Watley came up with the basic premise of "Looking for a New Love". The released recording is the 8-track demo of the song; that way the emotional urgency of Watley's vocal was still intact.

Chart performance[edit]

In the United States, "Looking for a New Love" peaked at No. 2 for four consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in April–May 1987, and spent three and two weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles and Hot Dance Club Play charts, respectively.[2] It ranked No. 16 on Billboard's Year-End chart for 1987. In Canada, "Looking for a New Love" topped the RPM Top Singles chart and was certified Gold by Music Canada.

Music video[edit]

The accompanying music video for "Looking for a New Love" was directed by Brian Grant and released in March 1987.[3] Grant previously directed music videos for Whitney Houston, Peter Gabriel and Tina Turner.
