DescriptionGeographical distribution of Sky-maiden or Bird-maiden motif (including Swan maiden variant) (ATU 400).png
English: Rough, approximate plotting of the geographical distribution of the folklore motif "Sky-maiden"/"Bird-maiden" (found in several cultures and most commonly known by the Swan maiden story, which is one of the variants), based on the locations as found in the map by Berezkin, Yuri (2010). "Sky-maiden and world mythology". Iris (31), p. 33 [1] (archived at Wayback Machine on 25 February 2024: [2]); his data was ultimately found in the database of areal distribution of motifs ([3], website not available anymore). As according to the information from the original article, it is a type of the "Magic wife" motif (other groups are "fish-maiden", "elk-maiden" etc.); here the white square with black dot represents the variant where the celestial woman in the story is a migratory bird (swan, goose, duck, crane or heron); the black circle with a white dot represents where the maiden is a dove; and the full dark blue circle represents where she appears as other non-migratory birds, or as stars and sky-nymphs
