Demographics

Hey Ljgua124, I removed a small section from Demographics on the Tubuai article. The Mormon church was founded in 1830 and they first sent missionaries there in the 1840s, over 60 years after the natives started associating with outside visitors. There is a footnote on the article that links to a memoir of a Protestant minister who wrote about the disease ravaging the island in the early 1820s and it states that those hardest hit had already had a disease picked up from sailors of a certain ship (it seems as if he's hinting at a sexually transmitted infection of some type?) If you need any assistance formatting refs let me know. Thanks for your work on that article. Evenrød (talk) 05:11, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a source for this part?: "...alcohol abuse, non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and forced or volunteer work in the phosphate mines on Makatea contributed to this decline in population.
More recently, the population has greatly increased thanks to social progress and reduced isolation from other parts of French Polynesia."
I would like to keep that in the article but we need a source and a just a general time-frame for when diabetes became an issue and the work in the phosphate mines, etc. Feel free to delete what I've written on your talk page by the way. Evenrød (talk) 05:51, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
All this I basically translated from the French wiki so whatever had a source there I put as a source on the English article too. Unfortunately none of this part was referenced on the other wiki. Ljgua124 (talk) 06:25, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh OK, makes sense. Are you personally familiar with the island? If so we could still include that information and just put a citation tag at the end. I know of sources that discuss the reliance on imported canned goods in certain parts of Polynesia and related diabetes, but it's difficult to find sources on Tubuai. I don't have any way of knowing whether someone in Papeete inserted the part about alcohol, diabetes, and mine workers from off the top of their head, for whatever reason. Evenrød (talk) 08:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I'm not personally familiar with it. It seems we may have to leave that out until a source is found. Ljgua124 (talk) 08:26, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, thanks. Evenrød (talk) 08:36, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
