The below quote is from someone else: Anyone who complains of anti-Semitism, while silently ignoring the massive daily evidence of the humiliations, harassment and violence dealt out on a systematic basis in Gaza and the West Bank, is ranting hollowly to my ear.

Reviewer of the Year
New page reviewer of the year cup.svg

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

TBAN Reminder[edit]

As I'm sure you're aware the recent AN discussion walks the line of your TBAN. So far I don't see the kinds of statements that lead to the TBAN and the specific people you've inquired about do not fall with-in even a broadly construed definition of the Holocaust or anti-semtisim. And while you should have given Coffee time to respond before going to AN (something you've acknowledged) I don't yet see any insinuation towards him of anti-antisemitism. However, both Coffee and TheSandDoctor have noted that there are elements of antisemitism at play in these edits. As such the conversation might reach a point where you won't be able to participate further without violating your TBAN. Further, as I have noted when we've interacted in the past, please do try and continue your focus on content not editors. This diff (to use your language) starts to smell like what happens when you're building to the kind of statement that would be a violation of the TBAN. Apologies for reminding you of things you already know but this felt like a situation where an ounce of prevention - even at the risk of annoying you - was worth a pound of cure. Barkeep49 (talk) 08:00, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Barkeep49, I meant that someone was pranking the OTRS to have them remove all these categories and lists. Sir Joseph (talk) 08:08, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Sir Joseph, I can't go into details but I see strong evidence against the suggestion the ticket is a prank or false filing. There's a lot more I wish I could write but I am bound by OTRS confidentiality myself. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 08:20, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Barkeep49, so all this is from ONE ticket? That is even moresbsurd. That does not make sense at all. Something is certainly not right then, to change dozens of lists and cats because of one complaint? What was the process? Who was involved? Sir Joseph (talk) 08:34, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
As you don't trust my response to date enough to avoid having nagging feelings, I am declining to say more (though I will encourage you to read OTRS policy on confidentiality if you haven't recently). Hopefully someone whose answers you will trust will reply to your question here or at AN. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:56, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Barkeep49, I didn't say I didn't trust you. You said you can't go into detials and you have strong evidence. But it's one ticket. So I'd like to see as much as I can. I mean something is amiss when you are deleting hundreds of entries. That is why I think it's a prank. I fail to see how having Allen Ginsberg or Uriah Levy or perhaps Haym Solomon labeled as a Jew would be detrimental and require OTRS handling. Sir Joseph (talk) 15:59, 31 December 2019 (UTC)

Våler & Os articles[edit]

Thanks for that! Shouldn't the original article locations (Våler, Hedmark and Os, Hedmark) be turned into redirects? As I now understand it, the areas are moving district, but there's nothing "wrong" with the original title that means that there shouldn't be redirects, and there are a lot of backlinks. Blythwood (talk) 05:26, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Ah, just seen you did that afterwards. No worries! Blythwood (talk) 05:27, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
Blythwood, I think because the page had a PROD on it, the script didn't work, so I had to manually do all that. Usually it automatically makes a redirect with a swap. Just one more reason not to cut and paste. :) Also, I think the inbound links gets fixed by a bot within a day or so. Sir Joseph (talk) 05:29, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020[edit]

Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg

Hello Sir Joseph,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Move mishap[edit]

Hi. Talk:Tulsa race massacre/Archive 1 and Talk:Tulsa race massacre/Archive 2 are now redirects to themselves. I would fix it, but I'm unable to find the original archives. Hope you know where to find them. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:28, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

  • Never mind; I found them. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:31, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
R'n'B, thanks, that was weird indeed. It looks like @El C: moved the talk page archives but not the actual talk page itself which is why the RM request was made. But not sure how that even happens. I've noticed weird things happen every once in a while with the round-robin swap that I manually have to check, but I guess I missed this one. Sir Joseph (talk) 01:08, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
  • I missed it, too. Thanks for attending to this. El_C 01:09, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Arbitration case opened[edit]

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Evidence. Please add your evidence by March 23, 2020, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

All content, links, and diffs from the original ARC and the latest ARC are being read into the evidence for this case.

The secondary mailing list is in use for this case: arbcom-en-b@wikimedia.org
