In the history of Morocco, there have been a few attempts to establish Republican forms of government: *Moor refugees from Andalusia formed in Salé and Rabat the ''Republic_of_Bou_Regreg,'' a base for piracy (1627-1668) *Berber rebels in the Rif Region first established a ''Rif-republic'' (1921-1926) under Abd_el-Krim against Spanish colonialism in the north of Morocco only, then 1925 they tried to take Fes, too, but failed to expanse their republic in French protectorate. *In 1971 army cadets under General Madbouh and Colonel Ababuh attacked the king Hassan II in ''Shkirat'' palace. In Radio Rabat the republic was proclaimed but suppressed by General Mohamed_Oufkir. However, in 1972 Oufkir tried his own coup d´etat, the airforce shot down the king´s airplane and bombed the royal palace in Rabat.
