Halisahar (In Bengali: হালিশহর) is a city and a municipality under Bijpur/ Naihati police stations of Barrackpore subdivision.[2] in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority.[3]

It was formerly known as Kumarhatta. It has an ideal blend of green with Townships with significant presence of wetland.

Geography[edit]

With a total area of 8.29 km2 (3.20 sq mi) Halisahar forms a small part of the state of West Bengal. There is a significant difference in elevation across different localities of Halisahar. There are significantly large numbers of ponds in Halisahar. Most of them are shallow. Moreover, it is adjacent to the river Ganga and therefore, Halisahar is abundant with water resources. Halisahar falls under the Earthquake zone 3.[4]

Climate[edit]

The main seasons are summer, rainy season, a short autumn, and winter. The summer in the delta region is noted for excessive humidity, with the highest day temperature ranging from 38 °C (100 °F) to 45 °C (113 °F). In early summer brief squalls and thunderstorms known as Kalbaisakhi or Norwesters, often occur. Halisahar receives the Bay of Bengal branch of the Indian ocean monsoon that moves in the northwest direction. Winter(December–January) is mild with average minimum temperatures of 19 °C (66.2 °F). A cold and dry northern wind blows in the winter, substantially lowering the humidity level.

Demographics[edit]

As of 2011 India census,[5] Halisahar had a population of 124,939: 65,467 male and 59,472 female. Halisahar has an average literacy rate of 88.36%: male literacy is 92.15%, and female literacy is 84.20%. The majority of the population is Bengali; Bihari and Odias are large minorities.

Culture[edit]

Halisahar is known for its cultural etiquette as it was the home of Sadhak Ramprasad Sen. Like in any other place of the West Bengal, the Durga Puja and the Kali Puja are celebrated with grand enthusiasm. Moreover, due to close proximity to the nearing industrial belts and the Kanchrapara Workshop, Halisahar is inhabited by people from several states and thus witnesses several religious festivals belonging to diverse communities. This includes some major festivals like Rath Yatra and Chhat Puja.

Economy[edit]

Hukum Chand Jute Mill[edit]

Hukum Chand Jute Mill is one of many jute mills in the region which is in current operation and situated at the Hazinagar area of the Halisahar. Although over years it has lost significant economic value due to declining jute demands, it once attracted labourers across the whole of eastern India to settle and work here. Currently operated by Hooghly Infrastructure Private Limited, it employs near 14,000 skilled workers.[6] The mill produces Bags, Clothes, Canvas and other related products.

Notable people[edit]

Halisahar was abode of Sadhak Ramprasad Sen, a saint, devotee of Hindu Goddess Kali. One can find many ashrams here, the famous Nigamananda Asram is at Halisahar. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Guru Griha is situated near 'Chaitannya Doba'. Both Rani Rashmoni and Sadhak Ramprasad Sen were born here. There is a tourist spot - the "Ramprasad Vita" which was the cottage of Sadhak Ramprasad, where he was born. Halisahar is also known as a birth land of freedom fighter Bipin Behari Ganguli. And there is a park named after him, Bipin Bihari Ganguly park, which was formerly known as Craig Park.
