Kazi Nazrul University (Bengali: কাজী নজরুল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়); is a public university in Asansol, West Bengal.[1][2] The university has been named after the poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.[1] The university was established in 2012 and Anuradha Mukherjee became the first vice-chancellor.[3]

History[edit]

For a long time there has been a demand for a University in this area. The Kazi Nazrul University was established under West Bengal Act. XIX of 2012 on 10 January 2013. The first Vice Chancellor Anuradha Mukhopadhyay joined her post on 3 December 2012. The Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.[4][5] laid the foundation stone of the Kazi Nazrul University at historic Polo Ground in Asansol in the name of the great rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, born in Churulia, Asansol. The University is established to promote higher education in Asansol and its adjoining areas. From July 2013, the University started its journey with about one hundred and twenty students. In the first year, post graduation classes have commenced in four subjects: Bengali, English, History and Mathematics in BCW hostel building in a campus in Asansol. In the academic session 2014-15 four new Post Graduate courses: M.A in Education, Hindi, Political Science & M.Com. were introduced.

Campus[edit]

The university campus is located at Nazrul Road, Kalla Bypass More, P.O.Kalla C.H., P.S. Asansol (North), Pin 713340, West Bengal. The campus is spread over 13 acres and will soon have a Nazrul Research Center [4] built within the campus area.

Background of the University[edit]

Situated in the Damodar River valley, in the hub of coal mines and industries, in the city of Asansol the Kazi Nazrul University is a highly focused source of general education for building careers in Humanities, General Science & Commerce. It represents an effective and significant investment in student's potential development in the evolving context of the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. The mission of this University is to contribute economic, social, intellectual and cultural development of the country through the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning and other creative and academic endeavours, pertaining to seminar, symposia, training in various service schemes, progressive research and extensive work. Teaching effort is carefully tuned to enable the students to overcome their weakness, to expand their knowledge and skills, to develop their necessary perspective, and enable them to perform to his /her fullest potential so as to cope with the future needs of the working world.

Departments[edit]

Bengali Department

Bengali Department of Kazi Nazrul University, established in 2012, offers Post Graduate course in Bengali. The noticeable feature of this Department is there are four sanctioned Teaching posts, of which one Professor and one Associate Professor will join in due course. There are separate lecture halls for special papers. The department is trying to build a departmental library of its own. The teacher- student relation is excellent in all respects. The Department is keen enough for the success of the students and guiding them for NET & SET examinations. The department is going to commence M Phil & Ph D course in coming days. Educational tour, seminar, debate, wall magazine, cultural shows are woven in the curricula apart from regular classes and periodical tests. Like other years, in this academic session also we got some students with good potentials and knack for literature. In this year the regular academic activities is going on smoothly with the co-operation of the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examinations & the students. We believe that by creating good students, we will accomplish our motto of making successful human being.

English Department

This department is still in its nascent stage as it began its fledgling academic quest in 2013. However it is all set to carve a singular niche in the domain of higher education in India. With four permanent faculty members along with prospective visiting faculties of repute, the department at present offers courses that enable the students at the postgraduate level to explore different nuances of South Asian Literatures, other Literatures in English and Dalit Literature along with canonical British Literature. It also brings into its repertoire, current theoretic trajectories on literature and culture studies. It offers special papers on American Literature, New Literature, Subaltern Studies and Literature in translation. To keep pace with the changing trends, it promises to introduce more novel and upcoming forms of studies as special papers in the near future. The department has introduce Ph.D. Programme in 2015 and cashing on the current research expertise of the faculty members it seeks to evolve itself in near future into a center of excellence specializing in South Asian Studies, Diaspora Studies, Nativism and contemporary Critical Theory. To keep alive the culture of vibrant academic activism, this department frequently organizes “Quest Series Lectures” by its own faculty members as well as by faculties from other departments within and outside the university. It also looks forward to organize meaningful seminars and symposiums very soon which would have a lasting impact in academia. A Departmental Journal reflecting latest research would also be in the offing very soon. In tune with global trends, this department also visualizes international research collaborations with other academies and research centers of international fame and many such futuristic plans are in the pipeline. We welcome new suggestions and academic interactions from budding as well as reputed scholars.

History Department

The study of history promotes better understanding of how societies work, the factors that brings them together and set them apart, and the events that have shaped their development. It helps to explain how different political and legal systems came into being and how economic and geographic conditions have driven the growth of nations.

Mathematics Department

This Department was established in 2013. This is the first Science Department of the Kazi Nazrul University. Currently the Department runs two-year Post Graduate Programme in mathematics (M.Sc. in four semesters). A wide variety of optional papers from the fields of Mathematics and applications is provided in the Post Graduate programme. Ph.D. programme will be introduced soon.
