In baseball, a double is a hit in which the batter advances to second base in one play, with neither the benefit of a fielding error nor another runner being put out on a fielder's choice.^[1] A batter may also be credited with a ground-rule double when a fair ball, after touching the ground, bounds into the stands or becomes lodged in a fence or scoreboard.^[2]

Hall of Fame center fielder Tris Speaker holds the Major League Baseball career doubles record with 792.^[3] Pete Rose is second with 746, the National League record.^[4] Speaker, Rose, Stan Musial (725), and Ty Cobb (724) are the only players with more than 700 doubles.^[3] Of the 176 Major League Baseball players who have hit 400 or more doubles, 74 are members of Baseball's Hall of Fame.^[5] Only doubles hit during the regular season are included in the totals (Derek Jeter holds the record in post-season doubles, with 32).^[6] 13 players on the list are active; Albert Pujols has the most doubles of any active player with 578.^[3]

Tris Speaker is the all-time leader in doubles, with 792. Pete Rose retired in 1986 with 746 doubles. Stan Musial hit 725 doubles with the St. Louis Cardinals. Ty Cobb (right, 724 doubles) and Babe Ruth (left, 506 doubles) Jeff Bagwell (left, 488 doubles) and Craig Biggio (right, 668 doubles) George Brett hit 665 doubles with the Kansas City Royals. Nap Lajoie hit 657 doubles between 1896 and 1916. Bobby Abreu retired in 2014 with 574 doubles. Frank Thomas (495 doubles) was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.
