In 1900 the sports club (SC) was a founding member of the German Football Association (DFB) and pioneer of football in the Thuringian area. Erfurt is the only team to have played in all seasons of the 3. Liga. The club has produced several national footballers such as Jürgen Heun, Thomas Linke and Clemens Fritz.
