Historical note: Alexander and Elizabeth Wilson arrived in Birkenhead from Ayrshire, Scotland. The family came to Auckland in 1863 and Alexander worked for a few years at Waiwera but in four years was able to buy 100 acres in Birkenhead where he built a home he named Betsland after his wife. He joined another settler Henry Hawkins, in fruit growing and became one of Birkenhead's founding orchardists.
