Description |
Schematic summarising the anatomical basis and physiological functions of the AIDA model. Different glucose fluxes corresponding to the numbers (1 to 4) in this figure are shown. (1) glucose absorption from the gut; (2) insulin-independent glucose utilisation in the brain (central nervous system) and red blood cells; and insulin-dependent glucose utilisation in muscle and adipose tissue; (3) net hepatic glucose balance (production or utilisation of glucose by the liver); (4) renal excretion of glucose. Abbreviations: G.A.R.=glucose absorption rate (mmol/hr); N.H.G.B.=net hepatic glucose balance (mmol/hr/kg); I.I.G.U.=insulin independent glucose uptake (mmol/hr/kg); A.G.=arterial plasma glucose (mmol/l); P.G.U.=peripheral glucose uptake (mmol/hr/kg); B.G.=blood glucose (mmol/l); U.G.E.R.=urinary glucose excretion rate (mmol/hr); insulin (mU/l); time (hrs). |
