Prof. Dr. I.J.J. (Irene) Burgers is an academic and legal expert specialized in International Tax Law. She currently holds the position of Professor of International Tax Law at the Faculty of Law and Professor of Economics of Taxation at the Faculty of Economics and Business, both at the University of Groningen. Irene Burgers has made contributions to the field of international taxation and her extensive work in research, teaching, and professional practice.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Irene Burgers was born in Deventer, the Netherlands, in 1962. She pursued a dual bachelor's degree in Economics of Taxation and Business Economics at the University of Groningen in 1985.

In 1992, Irene Burgers completed her doctoral dissertation, entitled "The allocation of fiscal profits to branches of internationally operating banking enterprises."[1] Her work in this area was recognized with the Mitchell B. Carroll Prize, given by the International Fiscal Association in the same year for outstanding contributions to the field of international tax law.[2]

Academic Career[edit]

Irene Burgers has focused her career on international tax law, particularly in the area of tax aspects of international business operations. She has contributed to this field through both teaching and writing.

Burgers has taught courses in International Tax Law, European Tax Law, Tax Policy, Taxation of Business Profits, and Tax Risk Management.[3] These courses have been part of the curriculum for students pursuing careers in tax and legal fields.

In addition to her teaching, Burgers has been involved in the creation and editing of academic materials.[4] She has worked as an editor and author for various publications in her field.[5]

Irene Burgers has a background in tax law that includes both academic and practical experiences. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a tax adviser at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where she dealt with various aspects of tax regulation and compliance.

She also served on the EU Arbitration Committee from 1995 to 2013 as an independent participant, contributing to the resolution of tax disputes.[6]

In addition, Burgers has been involved in advisory capacities, offering her expertise to the Dutch Ministry of Finance. She has been a part of several advisory groups and committees focused on tax-related issues.[7]
