Tipperary South was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas , from 1948 to 2016. The method of election was the single transferable vote form of proportional representation (PR-STV).
History and boundaries
It was created for the 1948 general election when the former Tipperary constituency was divided into Tipperary North and Tipperary South. It was made up of the administrative county of South Tipperary , some areas in North Tipperary and also a small portion of County Waterford to the south of Clonmel . The principle population centres were Tipperary , Clonmel, Cashel , Carrick-on-Suir and Cahir .
The Electoral (Amendment) Act 2009 defined the constituency as:[1]
"The county of South Tipperary, except the part thereof which is comprised in the constituency of Tipperary North;
and, in the former Rural District of Clonmel No. 2 in the county of Waterford, the electoral divisions of:
Kilmacomma, Kilronan;
and the townlands of:
Barravakeen, Bawnard, Boola, Carrickabrone, Coolishal, Derrinlaur Lower, Derrinlaur Upper, Glendaw, Gurteen Lower, Gurteen Upper, Lisheen, Tikincor Lower, Tikincor Upper, in the electoral division of Gurteen;
and the townlands of:
Croan Lower, Croan Upper, Glenary, Glennagad, Kilgainy Lower, Kilgainy Upper, Knocklucas, Knocknagriffin, Lyranearla, Monacalee, Poulboy, Poulnagunoge, Scrothea East, Scrothea West, Spa, in the electoral division of St. Mary's."
It was abolished at the 2016 general election and replaced by the new Tipperary constituency.
