Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded or have non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion or removal have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review.

If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions.

Examples of what you may request here

  • Obsolete – The file has been replaced by a better version.
  • Orphan – The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
  • Unencyclopedic – The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
  • Low quality – The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
  • Copyright violation – The file might be used in violation of copyright.
  • NFCC violation – The file is used under a claim of fair use but does not meet the requirements.
  • NFCC applied to free image - The file is used under a claim of fair use, but the file is either too simple, or is an image which has been wrongly labelled given evidence presented on the file description page.

What not to list here[edit]

  1. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use one of the speedy deletion templates. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.
  2. Files that have no source, have an unknown copyright, are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:
    1. {{subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated
    2. {{subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information
    3. {{subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but isn't used in any articles
    4. {{subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but could be replaced by a free file
    5. {{subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed
    6. {{subst:frn}} if a file has no non-free use rationale
  3. Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use
    1. {{isd|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
    2. {{now commons|File:NEW FILENAME}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{now commons}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)
  4. For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}}
  5. If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license, but lacks verification of this (either by an OTRS ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{subst:npd}}.
  6. Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.
  7. Description pages with no local file, even though they are in the file namespace, should not be listed here.
    1. Redirects should be treated as in any other namespace: if no speedy deletion criteria apply, they should be listed at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion.
    2. Local description pages for files hosted on Commons are usually speedy-deletable under criterion F2; use {{db-nofile}}.
    3. Local description pages with no associated file are speedy-deletable under criterion G8; use {{db-imagepage}}.
    4. Any other deletion of a description page with no local file should be listed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion.
  8. If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criterion 8 for files.
  9. If you are the uploader of the image, tag it with {{db-author}}.

Instructions for listing files for discussion

To list a file:

1
Edit the file page.

Add {{ffd|log=2016 April 8}} to the file page.

2
Create its FfD subsection.

Follow this edit link and list the file using {{subst:ffd2|File_name.ext|Uploader= |Reason= }} ~~~~

Leave the subject heading blank.

If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons.

For listing additional files with the same reason, edit the first file section and use {{subst:ffd2a|File_name.ext|Uploader= }} for each additional file. Also, add {{ffd|File:Name of the first file nominated|log=2016 April 8}} to the top of the file page of each file other than the first one nominated.

3
Give due notice.

Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{subst:fdw|File_name.ext}}

  • Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media
  • For multiple images by the same user, use {{subst:fdw-multi|First_file.ext|Second_file.ext|Third_file.ext}} ~~~~ (can handle up to 26)

If the image is in use, also consider adding {{ffdc|File_name.ext|log=2016 April 8}} to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages. Consider also notifying relevant WikiProjects of the discussion.

State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:

  • Delete. Orphaned with no foreseeable encyclopedic usage.
  • Delete. Replaced by File:FILE2.
  • Remove from ARTICLE1 and ARTICLE2. The file only meets WP:NFCC#8 with its use in ARTICLE3.
  • Non-free file may actually be free. This logo does not seem to meet the threshold of originality to be eligible for copyright in the United States and should actually be tagged free using {{PD-logo}}.

Some common reasons for deletion or removal from pages are:

  • Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new file name (often abbreviated OB)
  • Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the file is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed files to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
  • Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia (or for any Wikimedia project). Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
  • Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
  • Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright. (often abbreviated CV)
  • Non-free file issues - The non-free file may not meet all requirements outlined in the non-free file use policy, or may not be necessary to retain on Wikipedia or specific articles due to either free alternatives or better non-free alternative(s) existing.
  • File marked as non-free may actually be free - The file is marked non-free, but may actually be free content. (Example: A logo may not eligible for copyright alone because it is not original enough, and thus the logo is considered to be in the public domain.)

These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.

Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.

If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

Instructions for discussion participation[edit]

In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format
* '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~
where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:

Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.

Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons''', you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

Instructions for closing discussions[edit]

Nominations should be processed for closing after being listed for 7 days following the steps here.

File:Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament logo.png[edit]

File:Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament logo.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Bigddan11 (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Non-free logo currently being used in Pac-12 Conference Women's Basketball Tournament and List of Pac-12 Conference champions. Usage in the main article about the tournament was lacking the separate, specific non-free use rationale required by WP:NFCC#10c so I added the rationale since it appears this is still the logo being used according to pac-12.com/womens-basketball/womens-basketball-tournament. Usage in the list article does have a non-free use rationale, but I don't think it satisfies WP:NFCC#8 (per WP:NFLISTS) and so it should be removed. The seems to logo be for the tournaments held in Seattle, which started in 2012. The tournament format itself started in 2002 (according to the main article), rbut the list includes conference champions as far back as 1987 so the logo does not represent the first 15 to 16 years of the tournaments existence. Suggest keep for "Pac-12 Conference Women's Basketball Tournament" and remove from "List of Pac-12 Conference champions". -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:50, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Keep. The image is used with the consent of the Pac-12 and Stat Broadcast. Furthermore the Pac-12 has asked that the logo be used for all articles referring to the tournament in Seattle. Failure to do so would mean that ALL logos should be deleted on Wiki. Bigddan11 (talk) 17:33, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Wikipedia does not require the consent of the copyright holder for the use of non-free content, which is why it is treated as non-free. WP:NFCC is not applied to event logos based upon what the Pac-12, Stat Broadcast, or any tournament organizer/sponsor wants anymore then any of the article content of event articles is added or removed simply based upon what the subject of the article wants. The article is for reflecting what is written about the tournament, etc. in reliable sources, not for promoting the tournament or its imaging: in other words, it's not owned by either organization. If they wish the logo to be used in a manner not subject to NFCC, then maybe they should consider agreeing to release a freely-licensed version for upload to Wikimedia Commons. A non-free version of the logo may be used as long as the usage complies with NFCC, which I do not feel is the case for the list article. I am not saying that the file should be deleted; I am only saying it should be removed from the article where its usage doesn't comply with NFCC. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:00, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

File:Buster Keaton Rides Again.jpg[edit]

File:Buster Keaton Rides Again.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Bzuk (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

This file was created as attempt to replace the opening title screenshot. The file itself was previously the DVD cover but then replaced by the more recent poster. Looking at the poster, it is not a mere photo scan of the authentic poster. It appears computer-generated. Therefore, the screenshot should be the infobox image, neither the poster nor the DVD cover. George Ho (talk) 02:55, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Nonsense, this is the poster and was downloaded from an internet site, not made-up, George's screenshot of the title page has been superseded but there appears to be some Wp:own issues involved. Check the lengthy edit history of a non-issue. Really, a Wp:lame argument here. Sheeesh. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 03:24, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
The poster was made decades after the short film's release. How can it supersede the title screenshot, made in 1960s? Also, I tried finding the poster from 1960s but could not find it. --George Ho (talk) 07:16, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
In the hierarchy of image use for a film article article's infobox, it is 1) film poster 2} DVD/Video cover and 3) screenshot image of a title frame. The wikifilm group's MOS dealing with the use of an image in the infobox:
"Ideally, an image of the film's original theatrical release poster should be uploaded and added to the infobox to serve as an identifying image for the article. Poster images can be found at websites such as Internet Movie Poster Awards or Internet Movie Poster Database. If a poster image cannot be found for the film, or if the film did not have a theatrical release, then a cover image of the film's display case (VHS, DVD, etc.) may be used instead."
Please note the following proviso: "In the absence of an appropriate poster or cover image, a screenshot of the film's title card may also be used." What don't you get? A title frame can only be used if there is no film poster or other image from a media source. As a courtesy to you, I re-inserted the title frame, but it is a lousy image to begin with and only qualifies as a non-free image if there is a legitimate rationale provided, which I had done. Originally, I had written the entire film article on this particular documentary on a sandbox file, and found the same title frame but also located a film poster, so I discarded the first image. When I was about to put the article into the main space, I discovered another article on the same topic was already there. I then edited that article with new information and reference sources. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 08:18, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
There appears to be some confusion as to the source of the poster; it is found on this website. The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) may also have a copy of the original film poster, although in the case of The Railrodder and its accompanying "behind-the-scenes" documentary, it may not have had a traditional theatrical release, but still may have been premiered at film festivals or broadcast on television. The warehouse fire in 1969 resulted in the destruction of approximately 70% of the NFB items in storage, so my initial enquiries about obtaining a copy of the film poster were not successful. Buster Keaton Rides Again and The Railrodder were circulated in a number of different versions including 16 mm film, Lsser Videodisc, VHS and DVD formats, as a combined set or issued individually. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 18:58, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
That's not a 1960s poster. Even the website doesn't have it. The poster from the source, by looking at it, is probably recently made and digital-generated. --George Ho (talk) 19:23, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────It does not have to be a 1960s-era poster; any poster or DVD cover if they exist can be used to illustrate a film subject. Have you not read the proceeding information as to the standard required for an infobox image? FWiW Bzuk (talk) 19:29, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

What about what the guideline says, "original theatrical release poster"? George Ho (talk) 20:42, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Read on: if the film did not have a theatrical release, then a cover image of the film's display case (VHS, DVD, etc.) may be used instead." FWiW Bzuk (talk) 20:46, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Here are possible proofs of theatrical release: college showing in 1974, "Half Day" (1965), TV showing in 1969, showing from 1989 (French)—"Complexe Desjardins IV". --George Ho (talk) 22:32, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
Again: If a poster image cannot be found for the film, or if the film did not have a theatrical release, then a cover image of the film's display case (VHS, DVD, etc.) may be used instead." FWiW Bzuk (talk) 00:39, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
What about Laserdisc? It was earlier than VHS and DVD releases. --George Ho (talk) 08:48, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Saw it, but not really sure that the LaserDisc cover was suitable, as again, it was a dual set, the same reason that the first poster issued by the NFB was replaced by a "dedicated" film poster. There is no evidence that the poster in question is not appropriate as it is the illustration that is found on a number of websites, just as the MOS directs: "Poster images can be found at websites such as Internet Movie Poster Awards or Internet Movie Poster Database". The NFB image in their catalogue is also unsuitable. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 12:04, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

This morning, I received an email from Albert Ohayon, the resident collections expert at the National Film Board of Canada who confirms there was never any film poster created for Buster Keaton Rides Again. He also confirms that the poster is a DVD cover. What more is needed to end this action? FWiW Bzuk (talk) 13:28, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
Well, I like to use an earlier image than a DVD one. A historical value is the most important of an image. If a DVD image is replaceable by earlier image, perhaps either a screenshot, Laserdisc image, or VHS image. George Ho (talk) 19:05, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Have you not noticed that the original screenshot is still being used? In the infobox, there is a standard that is in place for the use of images. The image is the one that the NFB identified as DVD cover art of the film, and the only other images used by the NFB are unsuitable at this point. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 21:33, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Then which image shall be used as infobox image, the screenshot or the DVD cover (or poster)? I can't swap it now yet. George Ho (talk) 23:03, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
Quoting the film group MOS (again): If a poster image cannot be found for the film, or if the film did not have a theatrical release, then a cover image of the film's display case (VHS, DVD, etc.) may be used instead." This can't be more clear, the cover art is not only suitable but is already in place. The screenshot is still being used, just not in the infobox. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 23:15, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
Your view contrasts with mine. I guess we'll wait for third opinion then. George Ho (talk) 23:33, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Geez, this is not my opinion, viewpoint or idea, this is the Wiki Film Group's MOS directive. Have you not read this? If a poster image cannot be found for the film, or if the film did not have a theatrical release, then a cover image of the film's display case (VHS, DVD, etc.) may be used instead." The NFB confirms that no theatrical poster exists and that they use the DVD image already identified in the article. There is no rationale for a screenshot to replace cover art in an infobox if there is already a suitable image. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 23:45, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Can you stop re-quoting the rule? Why not just paraphrase it or something? It says that, if there is no appropriate poster or cover, a screenshot might be used instead. I don't know why the DVD cover is deemed an appropriate infobox image in the first place other than to make up for absence of a poster. DVD covers might be appropriate for TV seasons or old pornos (...no need to explain further about them). For reasons against DVD cover as an infobox image, as you said, it is the package of the short film and the documentary. Also, it is more recent/current than older shots or covers. Also, historical value of the image does not hold up. If you find my reasons invalid, I see no other reason to discuss this with you then. George Ho (talk) 00:43, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
I have said it before, the rule for infobox images in a Wiki film article is clear and unambiguous, if no original poster exists, use DVD or VHS cover art. It does not say a screenshot might be used instead. Your reasoning that the DVD cover art is not appropriate even though that is what the NFB uses, and is found on countless websites to illustrate the film in question, is completely baffling to me. Just saying that you think a screenshot is more important is fine, I incorporated it as a part of the content. It's not a particularly good image compared to the artwork that illustrates the article. If you have a problem with the Wiki Film Group's Manual of Style which specifies the use of images in a film article infobox, take it up with the group. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 01:07, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
Template:Infobox film/doc is not even a guideline. They are just instructions for the template, and you've used the same ol' quotes that isn't a "guideline" in the first place. WP:FILMNFI, a shortcut to the section of the real MOS guideline, discusses how to be careful with non-free images. Neither that nor WP:IUP is adequate about this dispute, unfortunately. --George Ho (talk) 05:44, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Comment: I don't think there's a knock-down policy-based (or guideline-based) reason to favour either the title card or the more recent poster. There's an editorial decision to be made about which would be more appropriate, but there is a good policy-based reason to say that we can't use both of them. I'm not sure FFD is the right place for making the decision as to which is used. Josh Milburn (talk) 08:10, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
John, if a rule is not enough to pick which image is appropriate, can you prefer which is good as the infobox image per WP:consensus? George Ho (talk) 08:16, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
@George: I'd personally lean towards the use of the DVD rather than the title card in this case, as in most cases. Josh Milburn (talk) 15:54, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── From WP:FILMNFI. these three tenets for using a non-free image must be met: (1) No free equivalent (no theatrical poster exists) (2) Minimal usage and minimal extent of use (only use in the infobox) (3) Significance (NFB identifies the DVD image as appropriate and is composed of an illustration from the film drawn in a 1960s "psychedelic" style with title of the film; this "head-and-shoulders" front view illustration showing the trademark outfit of rumpled clothes and porkpie hat, recreates a key comic scene in the film where Buster Keaton retrieves a tea service from a storage box, one that seemingly holds everything required on a long transcontinental trek; the same illustration is used on an earlier poster as well as being the basis of the cover art used in The Railrodder). As per discussion, I would not be in favour of using the screenshot as the infobox image, it is simply a poor representation of the film, showing only the lead character's back. Buster Keaton was an iconic film comic, and you just don't get that from the screenshot, the primary reason for replacing the image with a more appropriate one. US Hockey logos[edit]

File:US NTDP logo.svg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Two Hearted River (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).
File:United States national ice hockey team logo.svg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Zunter (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log)

Non-free logos being used in USA Hockey National Team Development Program and United States men's national ice hockey team . Each file has an non-free use rationale, but the files are essentially the same with the only difference being their respective names. I don't see why both of these are needed per WP:NFCC#3a when one is more than sufficient to serve the same encyclopedic purpose. Each of the articles appears to be sub-entity of USA Hockey which is using File:USA Hockey.svg, whose was discussed at Wikipedia:Non-free content review/Archive 67#File:USA Hockey.svg. If the difference between the "USA Hockey" logo and the other two is so minor that the three files are considered to be the same, then once again there's no need three separate files and the usage in the two child entity articles does not seem to satisfy No. 17 of WP:NFC#UUI. The files should be deleted since the "USA Hockey" logo seems to be the one currently used. The National Team Development Program has its own logo which could be used instead for its article. If, however, the development program/national team logo is considered to be too simple for copyright protection, then WP:NFCC no longer applies , but still there does not seem to be a need for two files. The better of the two should be converted to {{PD-logo}}, and tagged with {{trademark}} and {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} if necessary while the other should be deleted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:57, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Delete The screenshot fails WP:NFCC#8 in use in the film's article. The image caption talks about the film composer, but the image shows a different person conducting the score. There is no commentary about the screenshot thereby doing nothing to increase the reader's understanding of the topic and its exclusion is not detrimental to the understanding of the topic. The screenshot fails WP:NFCC#8 in use in the film conductor's biographical article. There is already a free image used in the infobox to show what he looks like. It is used in the impact and musical style section, but there is no commentary about the screenshot and no mention of the film in the section, thereby doing nothing to increase the reader's understanding of the topic and its exclusion is not detrimental to the understanding of the topic. The screenshot fails WP:NFCC#9 for use in the user page. Aspects (talk) 03:24, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Surinamese Football Association logos[edit]

File:Surinamese Football Association.svg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Yxifix (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log)

Two non-free versions of essentially the same file. Both files are not needed per WP:NFCC#3 and I don't believe it's possible for these to be converted to a free license. The svg file is being used in Surinamese Football Association. The file has a non-free use rationale which seems to comply with WP:NFCC. The file was also being used in SVB Hoofdklasse, but I removed it because it lacked the separate, specific non-free use rationale required by WP:NFCC#10c and I don't believe a valid rationale can be written for that particular usage.

The png file is being used in two articles: Suriname national football team and Suriname women's national football team. The file has sort of has a non-free use rationale for each usage, but I don't think the combining of multiple usages into a single rationale complies with WP:NFCC#10c. I also don't feel a valid rationale can be written for each usage because of No. 17 of WP:NFC#UUI. The png file is the older of the two, but it has been tagged with {{Should be SVG}} so I am assuming that is the preferred format.

I suggest keep for the svg file and delete for the png file. Also, suggest that mention be made that non-free usage of the svg version is only considered NFCC compliant for the association's article and not any of the individual team articles. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:36, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
