Articles for Improvement (AFI) is where Wikipedians discuss how to improve low quality articles. Articles are listed for at least seven days, after which the nomination may be closed; although they may remain listed for longer provided improvement is being carried out and until consensus on improvement is reached. During the period that articles are listed, users may offer suggestions on how to improve the article, including any possible sources, or may directly edit the article.

The process is designed to support the development and expansion of articles which do not meet the deletion criteria at WP:DEL-REASON, but are in need of care, especially those which have had cleanup and maintenance tags for over a month, yet are still awaiting improvement. The process follows the advice at Wikipedia:Before and the policy notes at WP:DEL-CONTENT to work to improve an article rather than list it at AfD.

Contributing to an AFI discussion

How to contribute

AFIs are a place for rational discussion of how an article could be improved to meet Wikipedia’s article guidelines and policies. To participate, the user just needs to edit the article's entry and provide useful comments on how to improve the article.

There are a few basic practices that most Wikipedians use in AFI discussions:

  • Start your comments or recommendations by writing Comments and sign them by adding ~~~~ to the end. If you are responding to another editor, put your comment directly below theirs, making sure it is indented (using multiple *s).
  • Please disclose whether you are the article's creator, a substantial or minor contributor, or if you otherwise have a vested interest in the article; WP:AVOIDCOI.
  • Please have a look at the article before making a recommendation. Do not base your recommendation solely on the information supplied by the nominator. To understand the situation, it may also help to look at the history of the article. Also, please read the earlier comments and recommendations. They may contain relevant arguments and further useful information.
What must be avoided

The following are practices that should be avoided:

  • The debate is not a discussion wether the article should be deleted or not, but how it might be improved.
  • The debate is not a vote; please make recommendations on the course of action to be taken, sustained by arguments.
  • You can explain your earlier recommendation in response to others, but do not repeat your recommendation on a new bulleted line.
  • Nomination already implies that the nominator recommends improvement (unless indicated otherwise), and nominators should refrain from repeating this recommendation on a separate bulleted line.
  • Do not make conflicting recommendations; if you change your mind, modify your original recommendation rather than adding a new one. The recommended way of doing this is to use strike-through by enclosing a retracted statement between <s> and </s> after the *.
Nominate an article

If you want to nominate an article, follow these instructions:
I.
Fill out the below form to request creation of the improvement request subpage.
  • Fill out the following form (replace "ARTICLENAME" with the name of the article you want improved):

II.
Add the content to the discussion page.
  • Replace "Reason" with the reason you think the page should be improved and sign it by adding ~~~~ ad the end.
III.
Save the page.
  • Press the "Save page" button at the bottom of the edit window.
  • Add the template {{AFI|PageName}} on the top of the article.
  • Note: You may want to leave a note at the related WikiProjects. To do so, use {{subst:AFIWPNote|PageName|WikiProjectName|~~~~}} under a new section on the WikiProject's talk page.
Closing an AFI nomination

Nominations for Articles for Improvement should remain open for at least 7 days, unless there is consensus that improvements have been reached. A nomination older than 7 days with no user feedback may be closed. Nominations that are actively being improved may remain open as long as is necessary to achieve the goal of improvement. An AFI nomination may be closed when participants reach consensus that the article has been improved; this may be reached at any point after the nomination was started.
When consensus is reached

Consensus to close the nomination is reached when an user agrees that the article has been substantially improved [or that after 7-14 days, there is not main interest into improving the article]. This consensus is showcased through a voting process held on the nomination page, where participants may vote *Ready followed by their signature if they believe that improvement has been done. After all users agree, an uninvolved user or administrator may close the discussion and archive the page.

Close proceeding

To close an AFI nomination, the closing user/admin may follow these steps:

  1. Add {{Archive top}} and {{Archive bottom}} to the nomination page.
  2. Add {{AFI Multi|ARTICLENAME|DATE}} to the article's talk page.
  3. Remove the nomination from the "current nominations" section below.
  4. Add the nomination to the monthly log af archived nominations.

The article is very small, and needs much cleanup, in order to meet WP:MOS. It also needs more information, gladly, I have found a bit of coverage of this Chris Carter television series The Lone Gunmen on Google. I hope this article can be improved. Cheers, TBrandley 21:18, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

I have found good coverage filtering a google search and the article can be substantially improved with such information. — 17:53, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

I did a search on Google and found a great coverage of this book. As of its actual state, it seems like it could be easily brought to AFD (so let's improve it to avoid a snow keep there :P). — 21:15, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Why would this article be a candidate for deletion? I assumed it would be better to start a stub than have no article on this book. Is starting bare-bones articles frowned upon? Naturally, I agree that the article has plenty of room for expansion and improvement. Eric talk 22:34, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
This is not deletion. This is improvement. Here, Wikipedians gather to improve the quality of the article :) — ΛΧΣ21 22:51, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi- I understand what AFI is, and was questioning the above ...could be easily brought to AFD... Eric talk 23:56, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, yes. At a glance, may people could bring the article for "notability issues" if they do not make a research. That's what i tried to say with "could be easily brought to AFD". I never intended to sya that it could get deleted because it won't. If so, I wouldn't had nominated it for AFi but for AFD :P — ΛΧΣ21 00:29, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I've added two sources and tagged it for Wikipedia:WikiProject Books. —Tom Morris (talk) 00:55, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

This article can be substantially expanded from information on the internet. As of the opening of this AFI, the article only has the infobox. I did a google search and a google news search and found very good coverage of the topic. — 21:06, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

I've added some sources. —Tom Morris (talk) 09:13, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
I've been able to add some actual information into the body of the article, however, there are still pretty big gaps in the article such as availability and general data about the phone, since we don't have much to go off now. -Gigabyte 88 (talk) 03:00, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
I have found several sources that could be of use: Unwired View [1], SlashGear [2], USA Today [3], Reuters [4], TechRadar [5] and PhonesReview [6]. Hope it helps. — 04:00, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
More sources: PC World [7], Press Blue [8], CNet [9], GSM Arena [10], Phone Arena [11], Digital Trends [12], PC Magazine [13], eWeek [14] and Daily Tech [15]. — 04:16, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

An article about a newspaper published between 1854 and 1942. It is on poor condition and may be substantially improved with information available on the internet. I made a quick google books search and found several useful things to start. — 20:23, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

  • I made some initial improvements to the article: de-orphaned it, cleaned-up, added italic title template and added a category. Then, slightly expanded it and added one source. Northamerica1000(talk) 21:35, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

This article was recently created and misses a lot of information that is on the internet. I have made a search on Google Books and found some substantial info to start. — 20:21, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
