Finding a source[edit]

Tips for finding a source yourself
Making a request
  • A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work
  • All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
  • We cannot handle full book scans
  • You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page
  • To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN ISSN, PMID, etc.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
  • Filled requests are archived.
  • Requests unfilled after three months will be archived

Fulfilling a request[edit]

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
  • Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}
  • You can point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... ). You can share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal, or by emailing the content to the requester.
  • You can email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

  • Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
  • Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
  • Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
  • Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

Mirror Neurons May Help Songbirds Stay in Tune

Greg Miller

In work published this week, researchers describe mirror neurons in songbirds that fire when a bird sings or hears another bird sing a song similar to its own, a finding that may pave the way to insights into how songbirds learn and maintain their complex songs.

Request for document cited multiple times in International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh)[edit]

Hi, I'm looking for Haq, M. Zahurul (5 August 2011). M.N. Schmitt, Louise Arimatsu, T. McCormack, ed. Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law - 2010 (1st ed.). Springer. p. 463. ISBN 978-9067048101. which is cited multiple times in International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh). Based on what I found online (no access to the full document) the original publication doesn't run more than 400 pages so at a minimum I think that needs to be fixed. More specifically, I'd like to know if the source confirms that the UN initially supported the tribunal and whether the US offered assistance, which the citation is used to justify in the entry. Thanks!--Bangabandhu (talk) 07:06, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

@Bangabandhu: If this is the right one on Springer, the book is almost 700 pages (including the reports, schemes, and bibliography). The article you need starts on p. 462 in the chapter named Correspondents reports. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:12, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
@Bangabandhu: I was able to find the relevant page online here, and have added the url to the citation in the article. I haven't checked it word-for-word, but at first reading it seems to support the statements where cited. Worldbruce (talk) 06:43, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
@Worldbruce: Thanks for the link. I think I was confused by an incomplete listing of the table of contents which excluded the "Correspondent's Report" section. Bangabandhu (talk)
@Bangabandhu: Are you looking for the actual article itself, or confirmation that the article supports the reference? --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 21:10, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
My main concern was the accuracy of the citation, which I'll accept as confirmed. I would like to read the article, though I sense from the list of queries on this page that there are other, more pressing requests. Thanks for your help. Bangabandhu (talk) 05:44, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

The History of My Kuamo'o-Sun Family of Hilo & Honolulu, Hawaii[edit]

  • William Afong Kaipo Kuamo'o (2006). The History of My Kuamo'o-Sun Family of Hilo & Honolulu, Hawaii. Scottsdale Arizona: OroViejo Publishing.

Is this a real source?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:33, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

@KAVEBEAR: I don't think so. I see hits on ancestry sites, but I don't believe it's legit. I've also found another source attributed to him:
  • William Afong Kaipo Kuamoo (April 2010). "The PoʻoKahuna Prince Who Would be King of Hawaii: The Battle of Kuamoo". Oʻiwi: The Native Hawaiian Journal (University of Hawaii Press) 4.

If I look at volume 4, his name isn't there. He also claims that it's located in one of the libraries at the University of Hawaii, but a search on the university's library catalog gives nothing. Also note: this supposed author has been vandalizing talk pages using different IP addresses. See here and here. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 00:11, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

Paradise of the Pacific[edit]

I am trying to find information about the publisher, the publishing location, the volume number and issue number for the April 1956 issue of Paradise of the Pacific.

@KAVEBEAR: It should be Vol 68, No. 4. And if i've located the right one in Worldcat, it was published by E.A. Langton-Boyle in Honolulu. The magazine was renamed to Honolulu magazine in 1966. I'll keep looking. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:01, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR: A search of the University of Honolulu's catalog confirms it. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:16, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
I am still not sure about the publisher since that magazine seem to switch publishers a few times during its existence. Why does the worldcat link says 1935?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:21, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
That was one of the issues I found on worldcat of the magazine. I didn't find that specific issue though besides ebay and other auction sites.I did find Vol 68, No. 5 at Hawaii State archive catalog, and it says Press Publishing Co., Honolulu. But I'm not sure if that's it. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:25, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Book on use of internet in Ghana[edit]

Title: Invisible Users; Youth in the Internet Cafés of Urban Ghana The Journal of Modern African Studies Volume 51 / Issue 03 / September 2013, pp 543-544 —M@sssly 07:03, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

@Masssly: The article you are referring to appears to be merely a review of that book. Is that what you are after? Don't have access to the book itself; but about 75% of it seems to be on Google Books. - Note that this author seems to have produced a variety of papers on the subject ([2]) almost any of which I could access.-- Elmidae 14:05, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Elmidae: pinging you in case you had missed my request. Thanks. —M@sssly 11:43, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
Oh sorry - that might have been a misunderstanding. I do not have access to the book itself, as I said (it's not in the UCT library). There is however a fairly comprehensive part of it on Google Books: [3] I'd guess chances should be good that you can find what you are looking for in that selection.-- Elmidae 12:04, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Is it possible for someone to get hold of the following thesis. I know there is a pdf file for it, but it doesn't actually give the entire source, but only the abstract. Cheers, Burklemore1 (talk) 03:55, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Need any information on Elizabeth Mantell, the medical missionary from Malawi, Africa.

New Classical Architecture[edit]

An important point in this entry is the difference between New Classical and Neo-Classical, which is not made very clearly. I'm interested in reading the article that is sourced with this footnote and described as An important clarion call was that of Demetri Porphyrios, "Classicism is not a Style," in "Architectural Design" vol. 52, no. 5/6, 1982, and reprinted various places. Australian metrication[edit]

I am seeing a useful snippet [4] on page 130 of Metrication, the Australian Experience: Proceedings of the North American-Australian Metric Conference that would help improve Australian standard pallet. The complete paper would be good, but if not, just the full citation so I can cite the snippet properly. --SpinningSpark 22:46, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

@Spinningspark: Here is a link to a list of libraries that have copies of the proceedings.
From the table of contents, p 27 is the start to "Metric Conversion and Standardisation by Mr W l Stewart" -- perhaps the appropriate article? That seems confirmed by a citation "
Stewart, W. I., (1975), Metric Conversion and Standardisation, , Proceedings of the North American - Australian Metric Conference - "Metrication : The Australian Experience"., pp. 27 - 33." in Dr Lloyd J Pilgrim (1999) Metrication: A job to complete?, Australian Surveyor, 44:1, 11-19, DOI: 10.1080/00050326.1999.10441898 To link to this article: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00050326.1999.10441898.

Any clue where Gannett newspaper archives can be located?[edit]

Resolved

Hi folks, this source went dead a little while ago: Campion, Emily (January 31, 2014). "West Lafayette native to be atop Thunder at Super Bowl". Lafayette Journal and Courier. Retrieved January 31, 2014.  Basically, I can't even find a paywall any more, the "archives" link at the main page just loops back to the main page, the article won't appear in a search at all and the 404 offers no clues. Apparently Gannett newspapers archive articles offsite after two years, and this disappearing archive problem appears to be happening to several of the newspapers that are, like this one, in the Gannett chain. This article sources a fairly important biographical tidbit in Thunder (horse), which is currently at FAC, where deadlinks are a real problem. I've tried to source the material independently elsewhere, and am not finding enough sources to cover it all. Anyone who can shoot me a link to the paywall that carries this article will have my gratitude, thanks! --Montanabw(talk) 01:00, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

@Montanabw: I haven't found that exact article, but I found one from the same author about Thunder on Feb 1st, 2014. Paywall is here.
I think it's the same article, only a day later, may have had an update. Will fix. Thank you SO much! Montanabw(talk) 02:58, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
@Montanabw: I'll keep this request open just in case someone can access the original article and compare it to the other article. If not, would you like this request to be marked as resolved? --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:05, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Kent James/Nick Name[edit]

The new article Kent James is currently in a poorly referenced state and makes no strong claim of notability under either WP:NMUSIC or WP:NACTOR — so technically it's AFDable. However, there is a potential alternative to deletion here: the subject was formerly known by the pseudonym "Nick Name", under which he fronted a band called "Nick Name and the Normals" who had an independent documentary film made about them in 2004. The problem, however, is that because the band broke up over a decade ago, I'm not finding strong sourcing on Google to determine whether converting this into an article about either the band or the film is a viable alternative or not — and in terms of more specialized login databases, I only have access to ProQuest's Canadian media databases (but not to any of its American ones), newspapers.com and EBSCOhost. None of which assisted at all, so shifting the article's focus doesn't look promising at this point, but I still wanted to ask if somebody could run a check on Nick Name and the Normals in other databases (Highbeam? Other ProQuest databases that I don't have access to?) before I officially list this for AFD. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 19:46, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops: 2014[edit]

Hi. I am trying to update the List of genetically modified crops article with the 2014 area planted. I have done what I can, but am missing a lot of information. I was hoping someone could provide a copy of the ISAAA Brief 49-2014 (ISBN 978-1-892456-59-1), which I think should contain all the additional info I need. Thanks in advance. @Kingofaces43 and Tryptofish: just in case. AIRcorn (talk) 05:44, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

I don't have access to the 2014 version unfortunately. Online versions seem to pop up after a few years though, but the best I can do for anything in this decade is a hard copy from our library. If you haven't seen the executive summary for the book, this might be a little bit of help. Kingofaces43 (talk) 16:03, 2 March 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't have it either. --Tryptofish (talk) 22:22, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

inquiry from the de-WP[edit]

Dear friends from the en-WP, is this Google Book available in full view and downloadable in the United States? In Germany, this is not the case. The book was published in 1912, and the author Paul Hambruch died in 1933. Therefore the copyright has expired not only in the United States, but also in most European countries, and perhaps Worldwide. Perhaps Google overlooked this. --Ratzer (talk) 20:45, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

1912 is to late, there is rare access. Mostly antil ~1910. Tested with proxy from list in s:de:gbs#Liste aktueller Web-Anonymizer --Franz (Fg68at) de:Talk 13:40, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
But there is a (qualitative better as Google) scan at https://archive.org/details/landeskundevonsc00hamb --Franz (Fg68at) de:Talk 13:49, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
Google and HathiTrust both default to a simplistic, safe-for-them approach to copyright, especially for users outside the US. The corresponding HathiTrust record doesn't have a death date for Hambruch, but they will likely be persuaded by the VIAF entry to revise their record. I've just notified them, so we'll see how long they take to respond. LeadSongDog come howl! 16:30, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
HathiTrust knows the death year of Paul Hambruch, see here.--Ratzer (talk) 10:09, 17 March 2016 (UTC)
So he may have two distinct records there, one with just the birth date and another with both. Anyhow, they've replied that the correction is in their work queue; they'll get to it eventually. VIAF and GND show a revision in his authority records just this February, but they do not reveal what that revision was. They have no diff accessible to users. It is likely just a case of needing this to percolate through the copyright administration mill. LeadSongDog come howl! 17:16, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

The Intellectual Culture of the Copper Eskimos[edit]

A few days ago I was working on Uvavnuk, improving the biography of a C19 Inuit woman whose poetic work is still being used today. I found my way to the relevant part of the ten-volume work by Arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen, who collected her tale. The text I was reading was raw, with plenty of machine transcription errors, but it served my purpose. Now I can't find it anywhere online: Google Books acknowledges its existence, but I can't see more than occasional snippets. I seem to recall that there is a resource somewhere in Wikipedia that might help me. Specifically, I want to read The Fifth Thule Expedition, especially the volume entitled The Intellectual Culture of the Copper Eskimos. Any ideas? Carbon Caryatid (talk) 23:43, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

There appears to be a download link here, although it looks a lil' fishy in that they want your email address. Still, if you've got a throwaway email address it might be worth a try. The material should certainly be out of copyright by now.-- Elmidae (talk) 15:16, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
Someone in the US might have access to Fra Grønland til Stillehavet, in Danish. The search finds her on p.99. She is also found on p.34 of Across Arctic America; narrative of the Fifth Thule expedition, the abridged 1927 English translation. LeadSongDog come howl! 19:54, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
Thank you to both of the responders. I followed the first link ("Yeareconomistbooks") and agree it looks strange: You've come to the website where you can explore a manual written by the architect of the Intellectual Culture of Copper Eskimos (Thule Expedition, 5th, 1921-1924 : No 9) by Knud J. Rasmussen. This crumb of literature ... is a creation of creativity script. You can procure a plagiarize of the ledger from the tie beneath Intellectual Culture of Copper Eskimos... The things we do for Wikipedia! But even weirder, I went through all the pages of that pdf, and tried various links, but can't find a way to the text of the book I want. As for the second suggestion, alas I don't read Danish, and the Hathi Trust website, of which I'd not heard before, lets me search but not read. So I'm no further forward.
I should say that I'm not looking for further information on Uvavnuk; rather, reading about Uvavnuk has stimulated me to find out more about her context and Rasmussen's journeys. I just want to read the book! And while I could find my way to a printed copy, I'd rather read it onscreen, not least for ease of searching. And finally finally the weirdest and most annoying thing: that I was reading the fulltext only a week ago, a site I must have found through simple googling, and now I can't locate it anywhere, because I didn't bookmark it. Thank you again to Elmidae and LeadSongDog, but I'd welcome any further ways forward. Carbon Caryatid (talk) 21:58, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Bitter Dawn, used in Murder of Anni Dewani[edit]

Bitter Dawn
Author: Dan Newling
ISBN: 9781868426249
Publisher: Johnathan Ball
ASIN: B00OYTE3NS
The Murder of Anni Dewani article makes extensive use of Bitter Dawn. The author who's added the refs hasn't targeted them (i.e. no page numbers) and was involved in a vicious content dispute on the article last year (resolved in his favour). I trust him to correctly represent what the book says, but it might be best if someone else confirms that the refs support the statements. Is it possible to get access to the entire book? It has been released in eBook form.[16] Thanks, Bromley86 (talk) 19:40, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
