The Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program is a Creative Arts Emmy Award which is given annually to an animated series which is judged to have been the best. Each series is allowed to submit one episode, and a special.

The Simpsons has won the most Emmys for Animated TV Series with 10 (out of 24 years of nominations), followed by the various Garfield specials which have won a combined four (out of 12 nominations) and South Park with five (out of 14 nominations). Though Fox could also submit episodes from The Simpsons or other series for consideration in the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series category, rules stipulate that a single program cannot be submitted in more than one category.[1] The Simpsons was submitted to the Comedy Series category in 1993 and 1994, which happened to be the only years the series has not been nominated in the Animation category (until 2014). Family Guy was submitted to and received a nomination in the Comedy Series category in 2009.

Rules[edit]

From 1999 to 2009, there are two categories for "Outstanding Animated Program", one for "Programming One Hour or Less" and one for "Programming One Hour or More", where the time refers to the broadcast time. Each series is allowed to submit a single episode or a special, and those programs are judged. For the individual people who receive nominations, a series is allowed to submit a maximum of 21 names alongside the episode, including a maximum of four directors, a maximum of three writers and a maximum of fourteen producers.[2]

For many of the Primetime Emmy Award categories, the rules specifically say that animated programs can not be nominated, although some of the Creative arts categories do allow animated programs to be submitted for consideration.[2] However, there have occasionally been programs submitted in the Primetime categories. For example, The Simpsons submitted the episodes "A Streetcar Named Marge" and "Mr. Plow" in the "Outstanding Comedy Series" category in 1993. However, they were not nominated.[3]
