Welcome to the assessment department of the WikiProject Indigenous peoples of the Americas! This department focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Indigenous peoples of the Americas articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the WP:1.0 program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{WikiProject Indigenous peoples of the Americas}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Indigenous peoples of the Americas articles by quality, Category:Indigenous peoples of the Americas articles by importance
How to rate[edit]
To rate an article, add
class=X|importance=Y
parameters inside the project banner, replacing X and Y with one of the quality/class and importance ratings respectively. For example:
{{WikiProject Indigenous peoples of the Americas|class=start|importance=mid}}
.
Look at the wikitext of some relevant talk pages for further examples.

Importance scale[edit]
Within the scope of this project, importance may be assessed in this way:
- Top: Major, broad articles that stretch across multiple indigenous groups, such as Andean civilizations, Columbian Exchange, Indigenous peoples of the Americas
- High: All Indigenous peoples of X articles (Indigenous peoples in Argentina, Pre-Columbian Ecuador, Native Americans in the United States), very large indigenous cultures or groups (Inca empire, Guaraní people), important indigenous issues (Indigenous intellectual property, Mestizo), and topics that have major regional importance.
- Mid: All other indigenous peoples, cultures, and groups. All current indigenous territories. Indigenous organizations. Notable indigenous individuals. Topics of national importance. Concepts, cultural objects, and sites of great significance to one or a few indigenous peoples.
- Low: Minor indigenous settlements. Topics of that are only important to a single indigenous group.
