The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge Category:People from Hawaii County, Hawaii to Category:People from Hawaii (island), keeping a redirect. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:54, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Possibly I should have proposed this the other way around, but the Big Island of Hawaii is coterminous with Hawaii County, so there's no benefit to categorisation (and possible confusion) created by having both. YorkshireLad  ✿  (talk) 21:18, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Good point: probably this way around makes more sense than my original proposal. YorkshireLad  ✿  (talk) 13:02, 26 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Preferably reverse merge leaving redirect. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:44, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reverse merge per nom (to be clear, this means the proposed merge, but the other way round per Place Clichy). SportingFlyer T·C 15:54, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:51, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: upmerge, redundant category layer, each with only one subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:13, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Dual Merge Both These both seemed reasonable until I clicked on them and all they hold is the aviation accident subcategory. RevelationDirect (talk) 00:44, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:50, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge per WP:SMALLCAT, just two or three articles in each of these categories and they are not part of a large overall accepted sub-categorization scheme. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:13, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge all for Now Cleary, these places have had a number of mayors but they will often not be notable. No objection to recreating any category later if the article count grows to 5+. RevelationDirect (talk) 00:19, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: no further action required (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 09:25, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: C2C Convention is "Wind power in ...". Terribly sorry but I've made the mistake of creating the new category. I've reverted my other changes, but now the new page must be deleted first? Hope this doesn't cause someone too much trouble. --DB1729 (talk) 13:08, 22 November 2020 (UTC) DB1729 (talk) 13:08, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 19:40, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per the others, "landmark" is subjective and the single article in the category is already in Category:Demolished buildings and structures in the Netherlands. SportingFlyer T·C 12:02, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, the term "landmark" may locally have significance e.g. in places in Australia and the United States, but that certainly is not relevant for non-English speaking countries. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:22, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 19:39, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per others - "destroyed" and especially "landmarks" are subjective, and there's a good question as to whether the single building in this category was actually destroyed (appears to have been moved.) SportingFlyer T·C 12:01, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete; could be created if any bio articles could be added to it. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:49, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a category for alumni of a secondary school that has always only had one entry. Which is contain in the article for the school, Rift Valley Academy. So this is category is not really needed. Adamant1 (talk) 11:02, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • It is not a complete tree nor meant to be. The larger part of secondary schools is not represented here. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:59, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete for Now No objection to recreating if we ever get up to 5+ articles, but it's been around since 2011 and has yet to aid navigation. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:57, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus after 7 weeks and 1 relist. Note there is no prohibition on manually doing the purge and/or split itself. (non-admin closure) William Allen Simpson (talk) 11:24, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Most of these don't redirect to a list. Alternatively the category could be purged from these too. Armbrust The Homunculus 18:58, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Purge, or else split, per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:37, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Gonnym: do we need new Rcat templates for TV redirects where the target pages are not lists? Cf. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 October 13#Category:Homeland episode redirects to lists. – Fayenatic London 10:19, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • The redirect template is {{R from fictional character}}, the category it populates is Category:Fictional character redirects (both do not use "to lists"). As I've stated elsewhere a few times, the correct thing to do is mass move all sub-categories of fictional character, fictional element and television episode categories (fictional location is already correctly setup) from "to lists". The redirect template clearly states that its usages is for redirect from a fictional character to a related fictional work or list of characters. The destination may be an article about a related fictional work that mentions this character, a standalone list of characters, or a subsection of an article or list., so lists isn't the only valid usage. I don't oppose Armbrust's standalone proposal as that is indeed the desired outcome I seek as well, I just want to point out, that the templates that automate categorization and other things would not work with variations in the title, and I would not like to code these exceptions as I can foresee a sea of bugs. --Gonnym (talk) 11:45, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • Thanks, but please clarify: Armbrust's proposal is to split between "character redirects" and "character redirects to lists" – IIUC, you do oppose this proposal, because the templates would not handle these variations. Rather, you suggest renaming rather than splitting, as part of a mass renaming of c.650 character categories, 70 element categories and 400 episode categories, removing the words "to lists". Please confirm that these three sets could be handled one set at a time. – Fayenatic London 15:51, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename. There is a rough consensus to rename, but also some skepticism as to whether the category should exist at all. I'm noting here that this is but one subcategory of Category:People who lost citizenship, so a follow-up nomination may be in order. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:58, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Or Category:Former citizens of the United States. Some of these people, like Naomi Osaka, did not lose their citizenship, but rather willingly gave it up. Also, new title would match Lists of former United States citizens. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 22:52, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Possible Keep (or reverse merge) -- We should not be discussing this category alone when the parent has 15-20 sibling subcategories. I looked at two articles neither of which mentioned that they had lost citizenship, let alone how: it could be by having renounced it; by being deprived of it for some action; or otherwise. In one case, the basis of US citizenship was not obvious, but perhaps though a marriage with loss being the result of a divorce. Possibly split according to reason for loss as there are 197 articles. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:58, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • If articles do not even mention the reason of loss, what is the the point of splitting the category by reason of loss? Besides the fact that articles do not bother to mention this, doesn't that confirm the lack of definingness? Marcocapelle (talk) 16:04, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename Loss implies that they wanted to keep it. Clearly some of them didnt. Lets have a more neutral term. Rathfelder (talk) 17:47, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I think citizenship categories are just plain non-defining to most people, and so not worth keeping. We do not categorize by everything that happens to a person, I see no reason to categorize by this. To keep this because of other unwise similar categories would allow proceduralism to preseve category clutter, something that we do not need.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:30, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am not totally convinced that it is not defining but I'll leave it to others to discuss that. The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus after 7 weeks and 1 relisting (non-admin closure) William Allen Simpson (talk) 11:06, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Space program of the United States is not entirely contained in NASA. US Space Force and US private companies have their own space programs. This category list stubs related to NASA, not USSF or US private companies. Soumya-8974 talk contribs subpages 13:11, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I could see other names though: Category:Space programs of the United States of America stubs or Category:Space programs of the Federal government of the United States stubs (which would include both the civil space programs (NASA run) and the military prograns (USAF operated for decades, now run by the USSF).
Or, if one wanted to include ALL programs being run in the geographic territory of the USA, whether they were gvmt or private, then something like or Category:Space programs operating in the Unites States of America stubs, which could include all the Federal civil space programs (under NASA); plus the military programs (all are Federal, and under USSF today) plus any State-level programs (where US states are pushing, and funding, their own agendas: I can think of several, mostly building and financing spaceports, often with the stated objective of economic development; plus any notable private programs funded and directed by private capital (like the SpaceX reusable launch system development program or the SpaceX Starship development program that is currently in its eighth year since Raptor engine development began, and the private company SpaceX has self-funded with approx. a billion USD to this point. So, this category needs a change. But could use additional thinking to get the new cat name(s) right. N2e (talk) 15:14, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep -- These are administrative categories to encourage people to expand articles. It is much better that they should be broadly drawn, so that we do not have to create unnecessary stub categories. I think the target minimum is 60. Category:Fantasy film festivals[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge both to a new Category:Fantasy and horror film festivals. There is some support for Category:Speculative fiction film festivals; the new category could be nominated for renaming to that if an editor wishes to do so. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:01, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: At the film festival level, there isn't a very clean segregation between these two film genres. While a very few film festivals do concentrate exclusively on one genre or the other, the vast majority freely blend both -- on a list-comparison in AWB, I found that about half of all the film festivals in both categories were filed as both genres, and even the ones that were filed only in one category or the other also largely should have been in both, as they were still mostly described as "fantasy and horror" film festivals in their articles. So there just isn't a clear enough distinction here to justify two separate categories here, because the vast majority of the contents in both categories are dual-genre fantasy and horror film festivals rather than single-genre fantasy or horror film festivals. Bearcat (talk) 16:00, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment, based on the article titles, most festivals seem to be about either horror or fantasy, and many articles refer to the festivals as simply "film festivals" (which does not solve anything). Marcocapelle (talk) 22:24, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The titles aren't a reliable gauge of anything. Even some of the festivals that do have one word or the other in their titles still describe the festival in body text as crossing over the genre distinction — for example, Telluride Horror Show describes its subject as exhibiting horror, fantasy and science fiction films, not just horror films alone. And festivals with one word or the other in their titles (as opposed to both, or neither) are in the clear minority, not "most", of the titles here even before taking into account that just eyeballing the titles alone still doesn't actually help delineate them cleanly. The result of the discussion was: delete. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:46, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: African isn't a nationality and we don't have a scheme of discographies by continent. For that matter, Category:Discographies by artist nationality is pretty navigable at 86 entries, so it's not necessary to have a by-continent scheme. ―Justin (koavf)T☮C☺M☯ 00:28, 14 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: The category has only one page. It is a small category and should be up merged. Shyamsunder (talk) 10:35, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: other categories under Category:Women's national association football team managers have only one article (Argentina, Costa Rica, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Lebanon, Venezuela...). However they are part of a coherent set, and they have potential for expansion, so WP:SMALLCAT would probably tell us to keep them. I am more concerned if these positions are really defining for people categorized there, who may have had an extensive career as football managers where not all positions are defining. Nominator's rationale: Indefinable and subjective category. That most of those currently listed are very widely admired African-Americans is indisputable - but what are the limits of this category? Are cultural (musical, sports, literary) figures to be included? How do we decide who is/is not a hero and for whom? Pincrete (talk) 10:18, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Response: The nominator has no problem with any of the "very widely admired" people on this list. He or she does not propose any people to be added or deleted. I think this is endorsement of the validity of the category. It is derived in part from List of monuments to African Americans. I think it's doing more good than harm. Correction - it's not doing any harm at all, as I see it. Any problems are hypothetical, and can be dealt with by discussion if and as they come up. The result of the discussion was: rename, but to Category:Lists of people by English school affiliation. MER-C 16:27, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Similar to Category:Lists of people by university or college in England, the people in these lists are not necessarily English themselves. Reywas92Talk 02:37, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:42, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:SHAREDNAME)
Taipei Metro stations are typically named after nearby roads or buildings for easier references, like with many transit systems. These categories group these stations by the type of name they have which is classic WP:SHAREDNAME. We categorize roads, hospitals, temples and schools separately but these are all metro stations - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:23, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 19:38, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:SHAREDNAME)
The Queen's category is my favorite grab bag of unrelated articles including Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Power Station, Queen Elizabeth Planetarium and Queen Elizabeth Subplate. Mr. Chavez has a lot of streets named after him while Mr. Vidyasagar‎ has many schools named in his honour. All three of these are classic WP:SHAREDNAME because they are things that would have been built anyway so they're not defined by their name and the contents are already listified here, here, and here. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:23, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
