Stormwatch copy edit

Hi. I made some minor edits to Backlog elimination April 2012 Stormwatch: Team Achilles article. It still requires more edits. I'm taking the course http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WIKISOO/Week_1 to get up to speed more quickly doing Wiki edits and article creation. Lorrie (talk) 17:49, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Editor is unhappy with GOCE copy-edit of Fashion (film)

Hi Torchiest, User:Prashant! has drawn a problem associated with this article's GOCE copy-edit of Fashion (film) to my attention here, history and would like me to return the request to its former place in the queue. It seems that another editor, User:Pleasant1623 who is not a GOCE member, edited the article after User:Nishitpatira, who accepted the request from the page. He marked the c/e done here. Prashant is unhappy with the results of the work. I don't think it's the GOCE's affair because Pleasant1623's edits aren't under the GOCE's name. Do you think I should restore his request to the page? Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:06, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply Torchiest; it's appreciated. :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:06, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Upcoming elections

Hi. I'll stand for reelection as coordinator, but am also planning to nominate Baffle gab1978 (after I ask them) and will stand aside if they're interested. I'm busier with other WP stuff than I used to be, and can't devote as much time to the position. I'll ping Baffle later today (gotta go out now). All the best, Miniapolis 14:08, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Sounds great. I was also planning on nominating Baffle if we were short a position. —Torchiest talkedits 19:25, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Darlene Pekul

Hi there,

This one was PRODed and just now de-PRODed. This looks like a good hit in Google books, but I am having a hard time getting any of the text to show in my browser; are you able to view that? BOZ (talk) 14:37, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Nope, blank for me too, although I was able to slightly advance the sample text shown in the actual search results page: [1]. —Torchiest talkedits 15:00, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks; that's a little more helpful. We might have to get someone who actually has the source to make use of it. BOZ (talk) 15:28, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

HighBeam for D&D articles (part 7)

OK, we'll start off quick and easy with a few game books (about all I could find for anything):

BOZ (talk) 14:27, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

They were just bestseller lists, no details, but I added all of them. —Torchiest talkedits 04:04, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! BOZ (talk) 20:03, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

OK then, novels are the next step! Let's start with Dragonlance. We already did what I found for Ravenloft, and I checked for the novels for Birthright, Dark Sun, Eberron, Greyhawk, Kara-Tur, Mystara, Planescape, and Spelljammer but found nothing. Forgotten Realms I found a fair amount, so we can save that for next week.

Here is what I found for Dragonlance, minus the stuff I already shared with you earlier this year.

BOZ (talk) 20:03, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Done. The first one had a good amount of info to add to the stub. Both of the links for Autumn Twilight were broken. The first link for Highlord Skies only had a little info on the audio and a tiny plot summary. The second was one I'd used for Dwarven Depths and only mentions the release date for Highlord Skies. The Fallen Sun link is just a passing mention with the thinnest description: "great battles are waged against evil dragons". Heh, not helpful. For the last two in the same link, the only information was the basic factual stuff in each article's first paragraph. So I couldn't add anything new, but was able to reference what was already there. There was a little bit about the series in general, and I added that to the main article. I'd say we'd be better off merging the two novels back into the main article for now until we find something with a bit more meat on it. —Torchiest talkedits 14:07, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
I looked up some of these links moths ago, so it's possible that HighBeam doesn't keep everything forever... I tried searching for those DoAT links again, but I didn't find them. As for the New Adventures books, if we don't have any significant material on them, then I guess it makes more sense to merge them in. BOZ (talk) 00:56, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

OK, so I did what I could when searching for D&D novels. The results I found were decent… but ultimately far fewer than I had hoped to see. Authors, on the other hand, are a completely different story.  :) There are a lot of hits for authors, which will really help our BLP situation a ton – but we'll get to that later. In the meantime, let's close out the novels by getting what I found for the Forgotten Realms:

BOZ (talk) 14:06, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

  • I'll check these off as a I go. So far, nothing super substantial, mostly publication details. —Torchiest talkedits 14:36, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Did a couple more. A lot of these are just release announcements or bestseller lists, which are already sourced with free copies. —Torchiest talkedits 13:24, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
  • The last batch was similar, with mostly release announcements and no details. One was just an excerpt from the book with no commentary at all. —Torchiest talkedits 12:52, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Finished with the rest. Although a lot of them were single mentions without details, I squeezed as much as I could out of them. —Torchiest talkedits 13:07, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Great! That does it for the novels. I added a bit to Maiden of Pain; could you please check the formatting for me? Ready to have a look at some authors? There's a lot. :) BOZ (talk) 13:44, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

WND is not a reliable source for anything other than its own opinions. Unless the event was covered by media more substantive than a right-wing rumormongering scandal sheet, it doesn't belong in her biography. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 13:48, 14 June 2013 (UTC)

GOCE barnstar

I'm curious, have you guys decided against awarding silver barnstars when there is a four-way tie for gold? GabeMc (talk|contribs) 03:09, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

I decided to stop giving out awards for submissions with zero votes. It had been a while since a silver award would go to someone with no votes and the deciding event was when there were no articles with votes at all. —Tourchiest talkedits 04:37, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I guess that makes good sense. Perhaps consider an "honorary mention" type barnstar to recognize editors who participate in the contest, but receive no !votes; in an effort to encourage their continued participation and help promote the contest. Cheers! GabeMc (talk|contribs) 02:26, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I've sometimes been tempted to think that we in GOCE actually give out too many barnstars, and that it has attracted some editors who should really not be copy editing. GabeMc, you are a good writer, but not everyone who signs up for our events is, and Torchiest will surely confirm that one of the hardest things we have to do is to find nice, non-discouraging ways to advise certain editors who come in very good faith that other areas of Wikipedianism are better suited to their skills than copy editing is. I think that if the allocation of votes (and they are votes, not !votes) has become such a bone of contention, then the time may have come to look where we can go that doesn't involve handing out shiny things at all. Most of the best work on Wikipedia is done not for such outward rewards but for the enjoyment of collaborative writing. --Stfg (talk) 16:30, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Oh, so you discourage "shiny awards" and you think that Torchiest agrees with you? I suppose that's why you started a copyedit contest and last month he gave you this, huh? Or why you gave Torchiest this barnstar, right? Also, how many different pages do you intend to follow me to Stfg? We've never even crossed paths until this week, and now you are commenting on at least three or four threads. Do you feel the need to "put me in my place" for some reason? Also, is there any possibility of dealing with Torchiest without you rushing to his defense at every turn? GabeMc (talk|contribs) 23:01, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
What astonishing assumptions of bad faith! As was this. No, I looked at your entry in the June CEM, tweaked the article very slightly, left a note about the election on your talk page, which therefore got on to my watch list for a day or so, spotted JG66's post there and your removal of it, and had a look. Torchiest's talk page is on my watch list anyway. And as a GOCE coordinator and once the lead coordinator, I have an interest in the development of GOCE's projects, use of barnstars, etc. Your talk page has been off my watchlist since yesterday, but I reserve the right to comment on GOCE projects and strategy and on articles I edit. However, I will leave this thread to Torchiest and yourself, since you ask so very nicely. --Stfg (talk) 23:22, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
P.S. The article is off my watchlist too now. --Stfg (talk) 23:24, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
P.S.S. Don't you mean to say: "The article is also off my watchlist" or "I've now taken the article off my watchlist as well"? GabeMc (talk|contribs) 04:11, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict) There's no need for this to get personal. My original concept for the contest was to create a type of collaborative workshop where people could share their work and learn from each other. The awards were secondary to the goal of trying to help people learn better copy editing techniques by looking at others' work and hopefully comparing it to their own. If accolades are what you're after, you can continue to receive them at WP:GAN and WP:FAC for your excellent work on music articles. —Torchiest talkedits 23:26, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Ahh, the accolade seeker strawman, weak! I suppose that's why you don't have a comprehensive list of your Wikipedia accomplishments detailed on your user page, right? Oh wait, you do! What gives? GabeMc (talk|contribs) 23:32, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your insights. —Torchiest talkedits 23:34, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Copy editing

Hi, I was copy editing Buda Castle, but when I saved it, there had been an edit conflict. I don't think that the editor who edited it is in the June 2013 Blitz, but what should I do word count wise?

Thanks, Matty.007 10:05, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

The solution is a bit convoluted. What I do in situations like that is first see how far down the article you made it in the copy editing. Looks like you completed everything through the Central Wing section. Then I go back to the version of the article before you did any editing, and open the entire article for editing. Then I delete everything past that section and do a preview. You can run the page size checker on previews. After deleting the bullet points so it could count everything, I came up with 8776 words that you covered with your edits. —Torchiest talkedits 13:41, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I will write a note on next to it on the blitz page. Matty.007 18:16, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
The article itself was 8344 words long. Do I count the words in the article, or in the edit section? Thanks, Matty.007 18:17, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes, sorry I didn't make that quite clear enough. If you click that page size link for this verson and notice the word count, look at the article and you'll see that it highlights in yellow all the text it is counting. Scroll down a ways and you'll see huge swaths of text that are still white. That text was not counted, because it is behind bullet points. I temporarily removed the bullet points so the tool would count those words as well. If you run the page size tool on the current version, where the bullets are removed, you'll see the word count is a much larger 12119 words for the entire article. So 8776 is the correct number to use. —Torchiest talkedits 18:33, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Matty.007 18:36, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

‎HighBeam for D&D articles (part 8)

OK, next is authors - I'm sure I've mentioned before that I have a lot. ;) I thought we should start with those listed in Contemporary Authors and similar types of listings. As always, if you find anything good in there for any D&D books (or any books at all, why be stingy), then we can add stuff to appropriate articles on the book or series as well. Some of these authors were not particularly deeply involved in D&D, so for those folks I did not search any more deeply, but for those who did more than one book or so I did further searches that we will get to later. Meanwhile, I have a few dozen hits like these, so I will share them with you a few at a time. If you'd rather see more, I can heavy it up on the next batch.

BOZ (talk) 22:33, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Andre Norton is an interesting one. Her bio has a lot of sources already, but could use a lot of organization work and some rewriting. She is fairly tangential to D&D, but pretty important to sci-fi/fantasy in general. My understanding is that her 1979 novel Quag Keep was kind of an homage to Gygax's original Greyhawk campaign, while her much later posthumously released Return to Quag Keep was more explicitly related to Greyhawk. BOZ (talk) 19:25, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

I think I'm going to have to beg off doing any more of these. I just realized that I've only got a month and a half left before my year subscription expires, and almost everything I've used it for has been D&D stuff you've listed for me. That's fine, since I'm obviously a fan, but this is getting a bit too far afield for me. I want to try and look into some stuff nearer and dearer to my heart before September 1 rolls around. Sorry! But you should apply for a subscription. They're taking applications here right now. —Torchiest talkedits 00:21, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
Cool, man. I was wondering how long you would put up with me, LOL.  :) Thank you tremendously for everything you have done so far. I will look into that; didn't know they were still offering it! Please don't be a stranger, man, it has been great working with you. :) BOZ (talk) 01:14, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. I still have grand plans for a many articles. :) Just need to look into some obscure older music stuff while I have the chance. —Torchiest talkedits 01:34, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
Great! :) I know we talked a while back about making more GA's. I got pretty focused on organizing things to look at for HighBeam (I will do the rest on my own, since I didn't make those lists to let 'em go to waste) since there was a time limit. But maybe in September or so I will bug you about doing some special collaborations. :) Users like Peregrine Fisher and Drilnoth were fantastic with me back in 2011 or so with churning out GA articles and even a few FA's - we were almost like a machine. ;) How does that sound? BOZ (talk) 01:39, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good! Probably October will be a better month to collaborate, since it's a off month for copy editing drives. —Torchiest talkedits 03:21, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
Works for me. :) BOZ (talk) 14:10, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

GOCE archive lists question regarding user name changes

Hi Torchiest, I'm currently copy-editing a request for User:Prashant!, who recently changed his user name from User:Pks1142, and has 10 requests under his earlier username (Pks) in the 2013 archive. How should we identify the user as the same person in the requests archive table? Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 02:59, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

How about just including (formerly Pks1142) in the first listing with the new name, and using just the new name thenceforth. That way we have a link, but don't overly clutter the table. —Torchiest talkedits 12:58, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
Yes I can do that, thanks. I was thinking of altering all instances of Pks1142 to Prashant! to keep everything together in the sortable table. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 21:42, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
Not a bad idea either, but if we ever wanted, for some odd reason, to go back and look at requests in the history of the main requests page, it would be easier to cross-reference the archive with the name used to make the request. But it's probably not a big deal either way. —Torchiest talkedits 05:08, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Ok that's a good point. Actually it's not a problem this time since he made this request under his old account with a different sig, but since he's a regular customer it's worth bearing this in mind for the next time (June x2). Thanks for clarifying anyway. :-) Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 05:22, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Hey there, just a momentary diversion.  :) Could you help me add some sources to a couple of articles I am trying to raise from the dead? I did a little bit with "The Walking Dead" actors Markice Moore and Vincent M. Ward, and I did get a few hits from HighBeam which may or may not add anything of use: [40][41]. BOZ (talk) 15:06, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, they're all extremely trivial. Here's everything at all useful from all four links.
  • Ward:
    • "Hearing a message from actor Vincent M. Ward II, 15 teenagers graduated Thursday morning from the Montgomery County Juvenile Drug Court program. Judge Anthony Capizzi presented certificates. Ward, a Trotwood-Madison graduate who is on television shows including The Walking Dead and True Blood, told staff, parents and the graduates that 'life is about choices. Rise and grind every day. Every day.'"
    • "Vincent M. Ward portrays the role of Kenzo. A Dayton, Ohio, native, Ward is a versatile actor and has played stage, television and movie roles that range from drug dealer to pastor."
  • Moore: "Evan Ross (left) is an inner-city Atlanta resident who sells drugs to Markice Moore's character in Warner Bros. Pictures' music-driven coming-of-age story, ATL."

Two of the Ward articles are identical. Let me know if any of this is worth including and I'll add it, but to me it looks like stuff that is either basic info or unimportant for a biographical article. —Torchiest talkedits 03:58, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Eh, that could be enough to cite a few basic facts like being in what movie or show, and what school Ward graduated from. BOZ (talk) 04:05, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Ok, thank, I did the best I could with that. :) BOZ (talk) 19:09, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
