Where does the button appear? --MikutoH talk! 23:20, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It should be in the same dropdown menu as the button for moving a page – depending on the skin you use, the menu will be called "More" or "Tools", and I think it's always near the 'View History' button. It won't show up unless you're looking at an article page. Tollens (talk) 23:28, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It worked now. Thanks --MikutoH talk! 23:28, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jsamson2001 (17:49, 21 May 2024)[edit]

Hi. I am attempting to write an article on a genus of organism with a large number of species. the article will contain a list of all species within the genus. I am attempting to format it like the list of species in the article "phrynichus (arachnid)." Data for the species in the genus will come from sources like catalogueoflife.org and similar. What I'm wondering is if there is some sort of automatic tool you can think of off the top of your head that would put these all in a list automatically. Or do I just have to type all 40 or so out manually? let me know if you know of anything --Jsamson2001 (talk) 17:49, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jsamson2001: I'm not certain such a tool exists right now. If all the data is coming from those sources, I can probably write a script that could format them for you, if you give me a couple minutes. It doesn't appear that bugguide.net has any ability to ask it from a script if they have any data about a particular species (and it seems they usually don't from the very quick search I did), and it looks like COL has essentially identical data to ITIS and GBIF. It would be very easy to write if it just added the i c g footnotes without checking anything, would that be helpful? Tollens (talk) 18:32, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would actually be extremely helpful if you wanted to. Don't go to any more trouble on my behalf than you want to though. Would definitely be helpful for big genera Jsamson2001 (talk) 18:35, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have any plan in particular for how or if you want to tag extinct species? Tollens (talk) 19:37, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't considered that, but maybe precede them with a cross like in the list of general at the end of this article? I'm not sure if websites like COL record that in such a way that it could be tagged automatically, but it could be manually added failing that Jsamson2001 (talk) 19:55, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
COL does, like in this list with Trogulus longpipes. I can add {{extinct}} in front of the name. Tollens (talk) 20:00, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I believe it should work – you can install the script by adding importScript("User:Tollens/speciesListFormatter.js"); // Backlink: [[User:Tollens/speciesListFormatter.js]] to User:Jsamson2001/common.js. The button should be in the "More" or "Tools" menu depending on the skin you're using. I split off the footnotes into a different input box, rather than just using i c g for everything. Tollens (talk) 20:19, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the stupid question, but when I use the tool it says to paste from catalog of life. What exactly do I paste from there? Jsamson2001 (talk) 03:38, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that, just figured it out Jsamson2001 (talk) 03:41, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's what I get for not checking the site before responding. Thank you. Jsamson2001 (talk) 02:23, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Greenwinch (22:55, 2 June 2024)[edit]

While editing articles here does it comes with citations all times? --Greenwinch (talk) 22:55, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Greenwinch – I'm not certain I understand what you are asking. If you are asking if all articles must have citations, the answer is yes, under the notability guidelines articles must demonstrate that the topic has been talked about in reliable sources through citations. If instead you are asking whether all content in an article must have citations, the answer is a bit complicated. Under the verifiability policy, inline citations are required when a statement has been challenged by someone else or is likely to be challenged by someone else, as well as for direct quotes and anything potentially controversial about a living person. This means that usually yes, most material needs a citation, but in some cases they are not required. Please be aware that if an unsourced change is reverted it may not be restored without including a citation. Tollens (talk) 18:39, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response, just in line to learn and work with Wikipedia.

Question from Sata 126 (17:32, 3 June 2024)[edit]

How do I create a page --Sata 126 (talk) 17:32, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sata 126! It looks like you have figured it out, but there are a couple things you should additionally be aware of if you are attempting to write a new article. On Wikipedia, all articles must demonstrate that their topic is what we call notable, meaning that it has been talked about in reliable sources. Usually this requires that at least three sources are provided in the article before a draft can be published. Additionally, articles must be written from a neutral point of view, meaning that words such as "glorious" or "illustrious" are not usually appropriate in a Wikipedia article. You might be interested in the page Help:Your first article, which has some helpful information. Tollens (talk) 18:50, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hollywood454545 (01:43, 4 June 2024)[edit]

Hello, thanks for your help. So. we've been having problems with stroll that each time we create an article for our artist, the troll goes and deletes it. Could you help me create a page for the artist and help me to lock it (if there's such a thing) so this troll editor can't delete it? --Hollywood454545 (talk) 01:43, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker)
Who is this "we" you are referring to? What other accounts do you have here?
Someone who has the user right to delete pages isn't a troll, but an administrator, who likely deleted the article because it was unambiguously promotional. Without knowing who the article subject is, it's impossible to investigate.
Go to WP:YFA and follow the directions. You're a paid editor, you have a conflict of interest, and the only venue available on Wikipedia for users with a conflict of interest is to create an article in draft space (or your sandbox) and submit it for review. The reviewer then decides if the draft can be published as an article. ~Anachronist (talk) 01:52, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from GJYFromOz (06:59, 11 June 2024)[edit]

Hi, and thanks for mentoring.

I am responding to a "Citation Needed" comment in the article on Kylea Tink. I've added an appropriate citation, but I can't seem to make it replace the "Citation Needed" text; it just appears next to it. Am I doing it wrong? --GJYFromOz (talk) 06:59, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GJYFromOz! Citation needed tags are manually placed by other editors and have to be manually removed as well. If you edit the page again, you can remove it by clicking the tag (while editing the page), then clicking the backspace key. Tollens (talk) 17:58, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that worked. GJYFromOz (talk) 11:25, 12 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do i do the pop up note thing for the sources? --Relvojtax0 (talk) 13:21, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Relvojtax0! You may want to read through this help page which explains how to add references as well as what kinds of references are typically required. Gable Redirect[edit]

Thank you. I'm glad that you understood what I was trying to do. A combination of the behavior of the AFCH script and my apparent lack of attention caused my edits to get messed up. The draft is now correctly tagged for comparison and combination into the article. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:27, 13 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from CalculusPerson (01:16, 15 June 2024)[edit]

Image[edit]

Hello! I spoke with you a few days ago at the Teahouse about using non-free images. I have another question: Can I take a screenshot from a film myself and upload it? Wafflewombat (talk) 09:32, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wafflewombat! That would absolutely be okay. The file upload wizard will help you add the necessary copyright information. Be aware, however, that you will need to replace the image currently in the article right after uploading it, and you should tag the old image with {{Di-orphaned non-free use}} once you've done so. Tollens (talk) 09:50, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Wafflewombat (talk) 10:07, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
