I'm no IT expert, but I've always assumed that you can't edit the history page -the comments are those you make manually when you edit the article, or are automatically generated by rollback or various bots. AFAIK, only developers can change history, and they are unlikely to do so without a very good reason.

You're right about vandalism, I have all the NAm species I've seen on my watchlist, and articles like Bald Eagle are regular targets

Let me know if I can help with any info for the missing articles. Most of these, almost by definition, are peripheral to the US, but I have the Croom Helm family guides for several families, and the field guides for Venezuela, Costa Rica and T&T for species having ranges extending that far south.

Expanding on your idea of another list, how's this: I'd like to import the wikitable someone created for the List of current members of the United States House of Representatives and import it to the Congressional roster of the 110th Congress. The graphics I think make for a better read, although it does extend out the article a bit more. The other option is to link the table from a seperate article to the 110th. I'd also like to create the same wikitable for the U.S. Senators over the next few weeks. They then could be used as a template for future congresses as we move forward. I like the box. It seems to be looking much better. Ideally I see the article as a nice box, which it has, then a series of brief intros pointing to full articles. After all, our state is densely populated and has a long history, all of which is central to the history of the United States. Just about every topic can use an article. As to how much of this I will do, I don't know. It isn't my area of interest. One thing leads to another in Wikipedia and before you know it you are contributing to a chain of articles all of which have to be corrected or filled in before you can do the thing in which you originally were interested. Hi. You asked me about Stonechats a little while ago. The simplest answer is that there is no common agreement yet on whether the three groups of subspecies should be treated as separate species; however, some authorities haven't yet considered the split proposal, so their current sticking with the status quo (lumping the three) shouldn't be taken as support for lumping. In terms of the American list, I'd suggest sticking with the AOU approach for the moment (you could add a note though, to explain that Siberian Stonechat is the taxon involved). I've also noticed some of the delegations (i.e. NH, CT and VT-there may be others ) have A/L representation listed at the ordinal congresses, but listed as district representation when you look at the congressional rosters from each state. The ordinal Congresses seem to be fine, since those are referenced. But the rosters from some states list district representation when they should be at-large (i.e. New Hampshire). For example, from 1789-1847 all reps were elected at-large according to the early ordinal congresses. However, the representative congressional roster shows them elected by distict. Not a big deal, but slightly innacurate. CT and VT also appear this way. There may be other states.Pmeleski 00:59, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

From time to time these "List of United States Representatives from" articles are nominated for AFD because in most cases they offer less information than the "United States Congressional Delegations from" articles. User:Markles is probably the major supporter of these articles, probably because he spent a lot of time on the one for Massachusetts. There is some discussion about them here. There is plenty of work to do, especially in the New York Delegations article, but I suggest that you work on whichever ones interest you the most. I know you would get resistance trying to delete any "List of United States Representatives from" articles though. It appears that you recently tried to move American Hog-nosed Skunk by copying its content and pasting it into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is considered undesirable because it splits the page history which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. I might mention that the authorities you quoted—Clements, the IUCN/BirdLife International, and the AOU—seem to be taken less seriously around here than most others. I had to add Falcipennis because it wasn't in the IUCN, so Polbot didn't add it.

I think you're misreading the WP:BIRD policy. It says, "The de facto standard for Wikipedia bird articles is Handbook of Birds of the World (HBW) for the northern hemisphere, and the Handbook of Australian, New Zealand and Antarctic Birds (HANZAB) for groups from that region. These should be used for all articles except for those dealing with a country or region, where the appropriate local official list should be used, as in List of North American birds and British Birds." The way I understand this is that in articles on taxa we should follow HBW and HANZAB, and "local official lists" such as the AOU's check-list only affect articles on regions.

I think we more or less ignore the IUCN. Last year when Polbot created all those genus and species stubs following the IUCN, we went through and created all the genus articles that were in HBW but not in IUCN.

It's very interesting to learn that the AOU typically follows Clements. We'll see what happens this fall. I believe the ABA's policy is to automatically follow the AOU in all taxonomy.

You're quite right to point out that our policy of going by HBW is repeatedly violated. For one thing, the earlier volumes of HBW are out of date; the one that covered grouse was published in 1994. That's why I'm not trying to defend HBW on this point.

When I asked at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Birds about overruling HBW on something (maybe Sociable Weaver instead of Social Weaver), I was told to be bold but have a justification in case I was challenged. That's what you did. I may be the only person who watches Falcipennis, but other people must have been watching Grouse, and since they didn't object and you're following a reasonable authority, I'm not going to object. Sure - IUCN treats it as distinct http://www.iucnredlist.org/search/details.php/40150/summ following BirdLife http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/species/index.html?action=SpcHTMDetails.asp&sid=6348&m=0 which also gives some sources. But ultimately it boils down to this. To which may be added the observation from here that a clear biogeographic break can be seen between Passeriformes from Oʻahu vs those of Maui Nui. So the Maui Nui forms would probably best considered subspecies, whereas the others would qualify as species. The entire group of course is a very close-knit complex. All members of the House who fill vacancies are elected - there is no other way to become a representative. Thus, "elected to fill vacancy" is redundant for House members. If you know the date of his/her installation, you could replace it with "July 3, 1923 – End". If you don't you should not bother putting in anything other than the new person's name. At the beginning of the 13th Congress, the districts changed. So on March 4, 1813, the seat to which Smilie had been re-elected, became the 13th district. Smilie represented the 9th until he died on 12/30/1812. On 3/4/1813 two things happened: A) Bard was moved to the 9th from the 4th; and B) the 9th seat, still vacant, became the 13th seat. I'm OK with what you've done to eliminate confederate reps from VA-1. We list those civil war seats as vacant in other articles, so I see no reason to list them there. However, you may want to consult http://bioguide.congress.gov to make sure. Virginia did not secede until April 1861, and some reps from seceding states opted to remain in Congress (like Andrew Johnson). So, you would include them up until the time their seat was declared vacant by the House. I'm not privy to your sources, but those are my thoughts. Another clarification. I hadn't realized that someone was adding CSA representatives to the list, as opposed to claiming these were US reps (for example from a Union-friendly district prior to the creation of West Virginia). I agree 100% with removing CSA reps from this list. Those are more appropriate in a stand-alone article about representation in the CSA House of Representatives. Sorry for the confusion. You have been making various changes to bird taxonomy, some of which I have reverted. I have two objections - firstly, you provide no cites to support the changes and, secondly, you erase any history of the species ever having been considered in any other taxonomic position. If you want to change taxonomy you should at least note the deposed synonym in the article. What list are you using for your birds? For exampel Aimophila botterii, this is considered Aimophila by every current list (see [2]) but you decide to change ti to Peucaea. Hi there, thanks for updating several article to their current names. When fixing the names, it is best to use the move button rather than to copy-paste a new entry and convert the old to a redirct. The move retains the edit history - the copy-paste gives the appearance that you wrote the entire article. Sometimes the moves may fail because there is a pre-existing page on the destination - you can then post a note on WT:BIRD and someone can fix that. Shyamal (talk) 16:31, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi. I hope you're keeping in mind that the IOC is our standard for English names only. For scientific names and for lumps and splits, it's just another source.

Unfortunately, we have no standard source for bird taxonomy. In my opinion, you shouldn't make taxonomic changes on Wikipedia unless you've reviewed the secondary sources (such as checklists and monographs) and have some understanding of the primary sources they're based on. As I'm not capable of evaluating those sources, I don't make taxonomic changes.

Steve Pryor, who knows a good deal more about this than I do, doesn't trust any of the current regional and world checklists and has suggested that the next edition of Howard and Moore will be better and we should wait till comes out.

In the meantime, when authorities such as the AOU or the IOC make changes, I think we should mention that in the articles. For instance, "This species is placed in genus X following these authorities, but these other authorities place it in genus Y."

Yes, it's a big mess, and I'm not doing much to help. My only advice is to focus on things like inconsistencies, and not worry about keeping up with changes, such as what the IOC did with Bonasa or the SACC did with Pipile. Woah, hang on. Paleobio database is good for some things but it seems to be following Livesey and Zusi, exclusively, and as far as I know no other fossil bird workers have adopted their extremely quirky and flawed taxonomy. Their "Odontoholomorphae" seems to be a synonym of Odontoclae, which is an 1800s name for the group of toothed birds, which is not recognized by any modern researchers. Most of their groups are paraphyletic, and some are both paraphyletic and contain groups which have never even been proposed to be close relatives, without comment (Rahonavis + enantiornithes, Archaeopteryx + Confuciusornis, etc.). You added "The district from 2003 to 2013" maps However those added pictures are the exact same picture and file as the 2002 pictures in those page's infoboxes Since they were the exact same file. I deleted the extra picture. My contributions have been rather insightful, however I have come across an arrogant egoistical wannabe Congressional historian (GoldRingChip). Why are we reverting back to Census 2000 figures, when I have placed updated 2010 Census figures? Why are we listing towns in a district from ten years earlier? Why not list the towns present in 1990, 1980, 1970, 1960, and 1950. We can make the page appear even more presentable. Why are we listing electoral results are the bottom of the page, with the latest first and the earliest last? It's quite absurb. Maybe the Baby Boehner prodigy gets enjoyment out of this, but I think its quite pathetic. Also, if we're going to list electoral results, then why stop at 1992? Why not go into 1910, 1866, 1824, and 1810? Wikipedia is not the National Archives, GoldRingChip seems to thinks it actually is. Rather than undoing my edits, like an immature prodigy son, maybe he should consider some of my recommendations. I do not think electoral results beyond a certain year are relevant and rather they belong on the individual member's page. I also do not think it is relevant listing towns in a district from 40 years ago, yet he seems to think that such is. I think GoldRingChip is trying to save as much info as possible which isn't necessarily a bad idea...Let me take your ideas 1 step at a time:

1) We should use the 2010 census figures, but I can't find a place where they relate to the new disticts......do you have a source, and can you share it? 2)The towns (within reason) should be listed comprehensively in the district history section (see MA District 3) 3) Election results, latest first so people can find it earlier than scrolling down to the end of the section. If you can find earlier results than what is posted, by all means have at it....just list a source.
Bottom line, I've found GoldRingChip to be a pretty reasonable guy when I have dealt with him in the past. Just discuss things with him before you do them, I'm sure he'll be reasonable. I've been going through photos in National Register of Historic Places listings in eastern Worcester, Massachusetts and adding date built and architectural style categories based on what's in the MACRIS database. I've come across a few that you took that I think may have gotten mixed up, although it's a little difficult to tell for sure based on the photos available in MACRIS and through Google Street View. I think the photo you identify as the John Johnson Three-Decker (140 Eastern St.) may actually be the Erick Kaller Three-Decker at 148 Eastern St. (when I zoom in on the photo, it looks like the number on the house is 148 and it looks like the photo MACRIS has for 148 Eastern St.). I think the one you identify as the Erick Kaller Three-Decker at 146 Eastern St. may actually be the John Johnson Three-Decker. I've been working on articles on basketball coaches, which led to wanting to see who will be in the American Athletic Conference next season, which led me to wodnering who wrote that well-researched article, so I decided to see who was working on it, which led me to you.

I noticed you have a lot of interest in birds, and I'm trying to figure out how to respond to an OTRS email which involves birds, so here goes. Someone has provided an image that they believe are Ruddy Shelducks in Texas, and believes that is unusual. We aren't, as you know, into OR, and simply reporting that this is a photo of the bird in Texas feels ORish. Hi, I wondered if I might ask you for a little assistance regarding a new template that I created on Daniel R. Gernatt, Sr., found at the foot of that article, as well as that of his wife and son. It seems that I've found a glitch in the system, and I wondered if you might know how to correct it. After I created the template, I went back and edited it, adding the names of the man's daughters in the 'family' section. But, the daughters' names have not come up in the templates in the associated articles, including Daniel R. Gernatt, Sr., Flavia C. Gernatt, and Daniel R. Gernatt, Jr.. I wondered if you might know how to correct that, and would like to ask if you would correct it if you know how. Hi, I noticed you changes this template, from Chancellors of the University of California to Chancellors of colleges of the University of California. I don't think this was a good change. The problem is that the University of California does not have colleges, it has universities. It is one university made up of 10 universities. Like, UC Davis and UCLA are universities, not colleges. In fact, UC Davis, UCLA, etc are made up of colleges, which have deans, not chancellors. Could you please change this back? The grounds are that UC Davis, UCLA, etc do not call themselves colleges, they call themselves universities. Any colleges in the UC system have deans, not chancellors. Thank you. Those are helpful lists but would be even more so if they included sources, not just because they should be included generally, but so the lists can be properly and easily updated as opponents are added, or some fall out (as is sure to happen in some of the further-out plans - a lot can change in a dozen years). Thank you for creating this navbox for the LSUS presidents, PVM. I work a lot on articles related to the University of Florida, and the overlap is John Lombardi, who was president of both UF and the LSUS. I've had creating a novbox for the LSUS presidents on my to-do forever, and I'm glad that you did it. Couple of follow-ups: (1) Could you tweak your new navbox so it includes the full common name for the LSUS presidents, like the University of Florida president navbox does? (2) Could you also edit the LSUS presidents' tenures so it follows the pattern "(1990–98)" per MOS:DATES? (3) Don't forget to delete the redundant LSUS succession boxes from the LSUS presidents' pages now that we have the much nicer navbox. I almost did these things myself, but it looks like this has become one of your personal projects, so I thought you would want to do it yourself. Cheers. This was unacceptable. Not only did you leave a rump amphibian page with three whole species in it, notwithstanding the very common coverage by reliable sources of an island's herpetofauna together, but more importantly you copied and pasted a lot of content without attribution (and if a split was to be done, you would have done much better to move the existing page to the reptile title and then split off the amphibians, thus keeping the bulk of the content with the history). Looks like you did the same thing here with the Puerto Rico list, removing most of the list and then copying and pasting it without attribution (and suggesting you had created it by your edit summary) here.

I'm not going to undo that as I have no involvement with that particular page, and there are arguably enough amphibian species to merit a split. Postdff...I split reptiles and amphibians Saint Lucia because the higher classes should have their respective pages for each political jurisdiction rather than have them lumped together. WP:Split does say to be bold. How many other lists have you improperly split in this manner that also have yet to be fixed?

Most every country/political jurisdiction has a page with just one class identified to it, except for the Caribbean (see Lists of reptiles by region, Lists of amphibians by region). I often see that you clean up species splits so I'm hoping you can help with something that I'm not clear on. A search for "White-winged scoter, Melanitta fusca" returns 92 results. What appears wrong is that the white-winged scoter has the binomial Melanitta deglandi and Melanitta fusca is the scientific name for the velvet scoter. Velvet scoter talks about the species split but it's not clear to me. Also some lists include "White-winged scoter, Melanitta fusca" and have the species status set as endangered and the IUCN number for the velvet scoter. I tried fixing it here and here, but I'm not sure I'm right. If you can make sense of that and advise me, I'd appreciate your help. Thanks,  SchreiberBike | ⌨  06:43, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Is there a mandate in Wiki that taxonomy has to be IOC ? I probably can understand the reason for English names - but if there is a mandate for a particular taxonomy to be followed, kindly point me to the area where I can understand the reasons discussed and then contribute my thoughts too. Wrt your talk page comment, I am glad that you acknowledge there is no one single taxonomy for birds - be it Wiki or anywhere else. Hence, kindly allow me, as the person maintaining the page, to follow a taxonomy which is relevant for the region as the base Kerala list which is published also follows Howard & Moore. I do have access to Howard & Moore and their corrigenda and I will keep it up to date - but please allow me sometime and avoid changing some of the edits I am doing to keep it in sync. I have stopped updating since you started changing species limits in the Kerala list - and will rejoin to complete the job, i.e. reverting some of your changes, if we in principle agree with what i stated here.

As an aside, avibase is kept up to date with H&M4 and their corrigenda - JFYI

It's all the same template. There's a school field too, but that's not needed if there's at least a redirect to the football team, which exists in pretty much all cases for existing teams and prominent defunct ones.
