Hi Varlaam, my screen reader JAWS allows me to review text character by character by pressing the left and right arrow keys, so that's how I notice spelling changes that don't affect pronunciation. Does your father use, or have any interest in, computers? Graham87 05:24, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

We are both engineers and he's a computer science prof.

Ergonomics is a long-time interest area of his; he is often more current than me.

The lab where I worked after university had a speech synthesis project, amongst others. But that was before you were born.

Back in the 1980s there was a lot of interest in trying to use computer technology to allow people to participate broadly in society when they had been isolated up until then.

But back then, would anyone have imagined a sysop who can't see?

I really really doubt that.

Wow, I'm fascinated by some of the older speech synthesisers; I used to do a lot of work with DECtalk. Are any of your old lab's projects mentioned in Klatt's History of Speech Synthesis, by any chance? I see computer accessibility (for blind people at least in home devices) as more of a pendulum than something that's always improving. When home computers had been using DOS for a while, there was a lot of demand for DOS screen readers, and some of them developed into quite amazing programs. Then Windows came along, and it wasn't until about 1998 that there were any really good Windows screen readers, as it took that long to figure out how to make Windows accessible for blind users. We're seeing the same thing now with Ajax; technology for the blind hasn't quite caught up with programs like Google Docs yet. Graham87 08:27, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

When you moved Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss to elsewhere by mistake, then realized it and moved it back to its proper place again, you forgot to re-add the page protection someone else put there to keep IP addresses from vandalizing it, like the one I just reverted did. Admittedly, since there was no copyright violation in my country which has very rigorous restrictions concerning that point, I did not check explicitly whether in the USA or the UK this would be different. Inspite of the YouTube's staff final agreement to accept this very long Audio of the Vienna performance as a Video (usually only 10 Minutes or shorter), this noncheck of mine of a possible copyright violation in the USA, Canada or the UK was a definite fault, and if you were true I herewith thank you for the reversion and will rigorously follow your 'not to ...' advice in all cases in future. Sorry! - Nonetheless, in the Wikipedia rules concerning the "case-to-case inclusion or noninclusion of Youtube links to the external links, an explicit and most visible hint to the fact should be added to the Wikipedia rules that a no-copyright violation in a particular state does not automatical imply a non-violation also in the US or the UK. Thanks for your input - I wasn't aware that there was any protocol regarding reverting vandalism. I was, however, expecting to see a 'revert vandalism' button or some such so made do with what I could when I couldn't find it! You'll note I'm only an occasional Wikipedian and only edit when I spot something untoward or add something of interest to me! Having read the revert help page, it does seem to me to ba a rather convoluted way of reverting. Perhaps the reason I missed it?!

Graham, may I trespass on your time to ask for your opinion on alt text? Seeing on your user page that you are blind I hope you won't find it tiresome if I ask for a steer on what is most helpful in alt text. Some users think it correct to add long and detailed descriptions of the image; I incline to keep the alt text as short as I can. My preparation for the Holy Week was a translation of a table of the movements of Bach's St Matthew Passion, found on de. Now a friend noticed about the background colours: "Using colour that way isn't a good approach; it's lost on the blind and on things like Google, causes difficulties for people with various forms of colour blindness or a need for best contrast due to other vision issues, and it messes up the edit box something fierce. Black, white, and grey is goodness. Lurid colours are for advertising (cf lipstick)". I would like to change it, what's your advice? I would like to change to something showing very clearly where choir I, II, "both" and "both in unison" are active, four different modes that means. This includes the soloists, for Bach there was soprano I, soprano II etc. Perhaps two columns, connected where both? The movements with "both in unison" should stand out most. Something else I would like to show more clearly is where a chorale is present, whether as a cantus firmus, a chorale fantasia, in an aria or a four-part setting. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:43, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Please look again, I inserted an extra column for everything connected to the Gospel, which includes the turbae, so in a way they would not need a colour, if chorus in that column it's turba. Hi there - hope all is well. I've been away from Wikipedia for a few weeks and am just getting back into it after a busy time at work. I created a draft article on the Australian Paralympic Swim Team and submitted it for review. It came back as declined due to copyright violations. I'm wondering if you can have a look for me and help me with it? Or should I refer it to the help desk? I have tried to contact the reviewer with questions but have not received a reply. It seems to be mainly around the first sentence which I am happy to change but I can't seem to access my article to edit it. I got the information from the APC website - as it turns out, this is the exact same wording as on the IPC site. My wording is different to these sites and I have provided a reference to the APC site but I may need to change it further. I would love to list all of the team members that have represented Australia - the IPC records only show medallists so I was hoping that people might be able to add information. I do have a list of Sydney 2000 swimmers tucked away that I can use as a reference. I've got another question about histmerges. I did another one, Yarmouth (CDP), Maine, and everything looks pretty good to me. The only problem is that the second earliest diff in the history looks a bit off because it's a redirect. Yes, I saw some of your facebook status. You went to a Wikiversity meeting, sounds exciting. I wanted to send you a message on Wikipedia regardless, for the sake of the good old times. I'm doing well too. I've managed to be on a wikibreak for a long time, in order to focus on my real life, girlfriend and studies. Now I'm one step closer to enter a health school to become an occupational therapist. That's going to be at least three years of studies. I still have a long way to go, but I'm going in the right direction and I feel happy.

I've encountered your work now twice in the NewPagesFeed Patrol (specifically Animal Farm and Andromeda (mythology)). I see 2 options, changing the importer script to mark as patrolled, or go back with your account and click the "mark as patrolled" so that they don't show up in the NPFeed list. Could you withhold from doing more imports until this is resolved with the New Pages Feed as your process as it exists creates more work for the New Pages Patrollers? Thanks for that - it is still about 4 articles wanting to break out of that - now that trove is here it might just be possible - when it first was edited it was hard to unravel all different things - the waverider bouy, the lighthouse, the horse tram, and the horrible little gap known as hells gates, have been there on a boat on a very calm day - would not want to be there in weather like we have in perth at the moment... Oh, good point about the "now"s, I've updated the preload template I use. I've also copied in Rcsprinter, who handles the BRfA stuff, but I'll try to keep an eye out for it too. Apert Syndrome is a genetic defect and falls under the broad classification of craniofacial/limb anomalies. It can be inherited from a parent who has Apert, or may be a fresh mutation. Graham, you do see the larger figure ( 160.000) in the article relating to children born with the condition. I am myself the parent of such a child, and am confident the larger figure is the more accurate. Are you personally familiar with Apert Syndrome?

Apert syndrome is a very rare condition estimated to occur in one of 45,000 to 160,000 live births. Apert syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition, meaning that only one parent needs to have an abnormal gene for the child to inherit the disease. The children of a person with Apert syndrome have a 50% chance of passing this mutation on to their children. In most cases, Apert syndrome arises from a sporadic or spontaneous mutation, meaning that the parents are unaffected and that the child is affected as a result of a new mutation or defect in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene, which is on chromosome number 10. Increased paternal age has been noted to be a risk factor for Apert syndrome. Males and females are equally affected. Hi Graham, I came across Kyrra Grunnsund in the BLP PROD category, I know you have an interest in Australian Paralympians, so I wondered if you might be interested in saving it from deletion. I can't find any reliable sources myself, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Australia at the Winter Olympics says that he was the first official competitor in the Winter Paralympics for Australia, but the ref for that is a dead link. Could you please hold off on editing the Ellie Cole page until I'm done going through it and copyediting? It makes it very difficult to review the article when it's changing in the middle of my review.
