Sharma is a Hindu Brahmin surname. The Sanskrit stem ṣárman- (nom. sarma) can mean 'joyfulness', 'comfort', 'happiness'.^[1]^[2] Sarma and Sarmah are alternative English spellings of the name, commonly used by Assamese Brahmins.^[3]
