Hi there - You kindly posted a comment on the Talk page for Cognita recently. I am trying to get to grips with the best way to get factual changes made in a timely way to the page for Cognita. I have posted a couple of Qs there today and it would be great if a Wikipedia editor could offer advice. You've taken an interest previously so I thought I would ask for your opinion on these latest posts I made to the talk page. Thanks. Please use edit summaries - if you do not then it is likely that your message will be reverted unread. If I messaged you on your talk page then it's easier if you reply there (I will have watchlisted it), rather than splitting the conversation between two pages.

I'm not sure why the 2010 wikitext editor is loading slowly for you. That is an uncommon problem. So, would you try something out for me? I'd like to know if the 2017WTE works any better for you. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and choose the "New wikitext mode". I just checked, and pages will open in it with the green/black gadget enabled. Whether it's better or worse or about the same, just knowing how it behaves for you would be potentially useful information for me. (Please ping me.) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 02:52, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Whatamidoing (WMF) If I do that then the whole edit window loads very slowly with a progress bar, and I haven't got a clew how to actually edit when it is open. Had to switch it off in order to reply! DuncanHill (talk) 14:34, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Are you on an older computer? If not, then I wonder whether mw:safemode would make things better for you. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 17:25, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Whatamidoing (WMF) I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I am not a techy type. I don't write or debug code, so a page telling me how to debug code is not a lot of use. I just want a useable toolbar. DuncanHill (talk) 17:34, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am a techy type, but I'm over 45, and the new toolbars are just harder to see clearly. What's wrong with having clearly-identifiable buttons for each function in one place? And wouldn't that be easier for new users too? Anyway, Duncan, if you can let me know if/when they get an add-on working that doesn't require a ton of coding, I'd appreciate it very much. Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 22:39, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
BilCat - Not sure if you've seen this at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Support_ends_for_the_2006_wikitext_editor - at the bottom of the thread is code to add to Special:MyPage/common.js.
mw.loader.load("/w/index.php?title=User:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/legacyToolbar.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript");
mw.loader.load("/w/index.php?title=User:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/legacyRefToolbar.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript");
It seems to work for me. DuncanHill (talk) 23:24, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Someone else pointed that out to me, and I've installed it. Thanks so much for not giving up on the issue. -

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, DuncanHill. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your comments on the talk page, but I felt that the article wasn't worth saving anyway because

  • There was obvious traceable copyright
  • Most of the text was posted by a paid editor
  • The text was almost entirely unreferenced, apart from two refs to the school itself, so no WP:RS
  • It was an obvious promo. Unreferenced cherry-picked claims include one of the top performing independent co-educational schools in the UK... academic results have soared in recent years .... Head attributes this to the arrival of girls... not only did they bring self-motivation but they raised the academic bar. A concerted effort to improve results through academic rigour, targeting and ‘working smarter’ has paid off... among top 20 UK co-ed independent schools.

If you are still unhappy about the deletion, please ping me here to keep any discussion in one place, cheers Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:04, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You will be pleased to note that Necrothesp has decided unilaterally to restore the unsourced promo by at least three COI editors, so my attempt to show some courtesy by explaining my position to you was, it appears, wasted Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:13, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, and you don't think deciding to delete it about an hour after the notice went on wasn't 'unilateral'? Okay then... If you want to delete any parts you consider are promotional then be my guest, but please don't delete the whole lot. This is clearly a notable topic and 'unilaterally' deleting other editors' valid work (including mine, incidentally) in this way is discourteous. It is also not unsourced (the school's website is a valid source for information about the school per WP:SELFSOURCE). -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:17, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I was, in fact, just joking? It seems the ref page trolls have taken their toll. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:22, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Guy was way out of order. I expect he thinks that the agriculture of Arizona or wherever the hell he was on about is the main topic of dinner-time conversation from Tobermory to Timbuctoo. If he thinks it's OK to bite the head off of someone asking for clarity of language he's got no business talking about science at all. Your joke was poorly timed. Science is staying off my watchlist for now, and frankly with Jayron up to his usual half-truths and misrepresentation on Humanities I'm not sure I'll be bothering with any of them much. If you need to ask for protection for any of them use WP:RPP, and to get the troll's edits blanked properly go to WP:OVERSIGHT. Good luck. DuncanHill (talk) 18:17, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Most of my jokes are mistimed, and always a bit corny, alas. I do apologise. I was only trying make you laugh. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:41, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Editing in 1857 revolt page

This was a wrong information so I correct it.In this one cast is represent as superior and other one is depressed which was not true.So I edited this page correctly Nspaap (talk) 15:00, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nspaap@ No, that is not what you did. this is your edit. It says nothing about caste, simply removed cited material. DuncanHill (talk) 15:02, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I did right u are not belong to that area ,but I belong to that area.So I know everything correctly Nspaap (talk) 04:40, 7 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Australian people of Cornish descent

Um, why undo that edit? Fergananim (talk) 11:19, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Because it was already established when Brough87 made a series of identical removals that the category should remain. DuncanHill (talk) 11:21, 25 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

Hello DH. I think you signed your post here Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities#The Killing Of Georgie - Rod Stewart with five tildes instead of four. Not a big deal but I thought I'd let you know in case you wanted to fix it. I hope someone is able to find the answer to your question. MarnetteD|Talk 02:33, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Expatriates

Expatriates are not People of Fooish descent. They are people who intend to return to their country of origin. They are not citizens of the place they are staying. Would you like to have a look at this discussion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Categorization "Cycle is BRD" means nothing to me I am afraid. Rathfelder (talk) 22:46, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

BRD - Wikipedia:Bold, Revert, Discuss, of which you have been advised many times before, so you are obviously both lying, and calling me an idiot, when you pretend not to know that it is. DuncanHill (talk) 22:50, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
