Graph usage request

Greetings,

My name is Timothy Schafer and I'm working for the Centre for Sustainable Community Development at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

I'm helping assemble the graphics for a book on development of sustainable communities. I was just looking at the image XXXXXXXXXXXx on page XXXX of XXXXXXXXXx, and wondering if:

a) Is it yours? If so, would you allow us to publish it in the book under conditions outlined below?

b) If it's not yours, whose is it, and who has permission to authorize its use in a publication? How might we get in touch with him/her?

c) What's the highest resolution version of this photo available? We need one at least 300 dpi at print size.

Some details about the project: Author is Mark Roseland. Read more about him here: http://www.sfu.ca/cscd/directory/mark-roseland/; http://www.rem.sfu.ca/people/roseland/ The book's working title is Toward Sustainable Communities: Solutions for Citizens and Their Governments. This is actually a fourth edition of the book Toward Sustainable Communities. It was first published in 1992; two revised editions have been published in 1998 and 2005 to favorable reviews. Here's a link to the last edition on Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=IVrrq4Zs2u8C&printsec=frontcover&dq=Mark+Roseland&hl=en&src=bmrr&ei=DLb2TfO7KIr2tgPYuLTfBw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAA Subject: A compendium of "best practices" that citizens and local governments can initiate to promote sustainability at the community level, covering urban agriculture, recycling and waste management, transportation, land use and more. The book will be published in hard copy (up to 10,000 copies probably) and in a digital format. It will also be promoted on soon-to-be-established research network that links communities and local governments with research institutions. Conditions we'd need the owner of the photo to approve: We can use it in materials created to market the book. We can crop the photo as necessary to make it fit the book's layout. We'll credit you, along with all other photographers, on the book's photo credit page(s). We don't need copyright for the image; just permission to use it on the bases outlined above. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Timothy Schafer editor@thenelsondaily.com 66.244.246.8 (talk) 22:47, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question about research

I wanted to ask a question about some research I want to do. I want to search approximately 20 different terms in google and find out where the Wikipedia page for each term ranks compared to other online resources. Specifically, I would be looking at terms for dermatologic conditions. So, for example, with the following search [1] on my results screen Wikipedia is the first entry, followed by medscape. Can I use google trends/"Google Insights for Search" to accomplish this? Or is there some other way I can compare google results? ---kilbad (talk) 21:07, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

References

I saw the article in signpost about the fix you pushe through for the references tag. Firstly, can I say thank you for taking this initiative and getting this change agreed and pushed through - I've not doubt it will result in a far better editing experience.

I'm thinking of a next stage to this: I imagine it would be fairly straigtforward to set up a bot that goes through existing articles and moves references to the bottom. What do you think? I don't have any bot experience so it's not something that I could do but would be interested in pushing this through? AndrewRT(Talk) 16:26, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A large-scale, bot-based conversion is an issue for the larger community to decide, but in any event, it is not something I plan to work on. Dragons flight (talk) 18:20, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have a different thought. We should have the editor go ahead and put the first full reference directly in the text, then future references in the format <ref name = "foo"> (+ full ref info)</ref> for the first reference, then a re-used reference could have <ref name = "foo"|page = 15 />. Then the system would place in the references section the full reference, and following that would be a reference to the reference, similar to the Harvard style notation/reference system. Except it wouldn't require two edits (or two sections). The problem I'm trying to solve is that repeated references don't currently allow for page numbers when they're re-used, and that's what I'm looking to have changed. It's also less cumbersome than the {{Rp}} template, and would look better within the text. This solves a different problem than the changes that just got put through, but I thought you're a good person to ask, and I couldn't make the changes I'm thinking about anyway...
So does this all make sense? And is it do-able? Hires an editor (talk) 03:21, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the cite.php update! I've been wishing for exactly this for years. Good job! --Zvika (talk) 19:39, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Fake (band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Str right/doc

I really disagree with your addition of Template:Title disambig text to the See also section of Template:Str right/doc, but am not going to edit war over that. Please note that I have extensively updated the documentation page of Template:Title disambig text, which has also resulted in it becoming more like the documentation pages of Template:Str right and its related templates. Debresser (talk) 22:31, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Structurally, I think our goal should be to do what we can to help people find what they are looking for. Which is why I think it makes imminent sense to include that in the see also. I reverted so I could explain my reasoning in the log, but if you'd prefer to take it out and start a discussion / recruit a third opinion, I would not put it back again. I will thank you for the improved documentation. I noticed that the documentation across many of the string templates has been improved and I guess you are responsible for a significant chunk of that. So thanks. Keep up the good work. NOTCONTENT

Hi. Regarding Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Disambiguation_pages_are_not_articles. There would be a great potential use for a __NOTCONTENT__ tag. The "navigational pages" are currently being examined/discussed at User:Karanacs/Outline RfC draft. (It's an attempted summary of a years-long dispute that has spanned dozens of pages and threads, examining whether "navigational pages" are welcome in mainspace or not. It's stemming from some editors being very displeased with the "Outlines" (formerly "Basic topic lists") project, but I believe the root issue is this wider one.)

So far that page is really short and concise (but densely packed). I'm trying to get admin Karanacs uptodate on all the overlapping issues, and am expecting some replies from her there in the next few days (see User_talk:Karanacs#Outline_bump). We're still trying to find ways to look at the situation, in order to make possible solutions clearer (a new namespace, or new guideline, or ?). Then we intended on taking our thoughts to a wider venue (VP or RfC or etc). But your idea might be the cleanest/ideal solution.

(Feel free to reply here, there, or other. I'm replying here instead of the VP thread, to avoid having a sudden influx of overopinionated/underinformed editors arrive at the RfC draft ;) -- Quiddity (talk) 19:16, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Edit requests

I'd like to implement a feature in two templates that you protected: see Template_talk:Str_index and Template_talk:Str_sub. These templates end up using {{FormattingError}} in some cases, which puts the page in Category:Pages_with_incorrect_formatting_templates_use. It is common and not incorrect for example pages to show these errors, so FormattingError has an argument called "nocategory" that can be set to "true" to prevent categorization, while retaining the error message. There are a number of pages that are currently in this category that should not be, for this reason. I've made all edits that I could to fix this, but I need to access these two templates as well. Can you un-protect them so I can do this, or make the changes yourself?     — SkyLined (talk) 09:28, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, this has been resolved.     — SkyLined (talk) 12:22, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Vacuum cannot be proper vacuum. There must be a medium to hold the dark energy and there exists an isometric medium consisting of photons which are holding the dark energy as photons are the smallest elementary particle in term of energy as well as mass.

If we cannot create a perfect vacuum, then we cannot conclude that an electro magnetic radiation can propagate without a medium.

A photon cannot be mass less. Its rest mass is assumed to be zero as it is so small that it cannot be weighed. Its momentum can be observed as it is not so negligible.

A photon cannot travel from the source of an electro magnetic radiation to another to carry out the energy. Photons only transfer the energy from one point to another as per the basic rule of the transverse wave as an electro magnetic wave is a special kind of transverse wave.

Vibration is the only way to transfer energy from one point to another. Different mode of vibration produces different kind of energy. So if we try to construct the T.O.E. equation, then we have to find out the equation of different mode of vibrations.

A string is hypothetical as we cannot explain that by which matter it is made of. What there exists in any elementary particle to produce the mass, charge etc. is a medium of high dense photons. The photons absorb energy from different rays of different frequencies. As there exists a magnetic moment in every elementary particle, the photons cannot escape from the particles. The continuous energy state change (as it absorbs energy from a ray having a definite frequency or of its multiple integral) of the photons produces a definite mode of vibration. As a result the mass and charges (in some cases) of the particles are produced.

A black hole is continuously expanding and the proper vacuum only exists in the active gravitational field of it because the gravity of a black hole is so intense that it attracts even the particles of negligible masses, like photons.

The Big Bang is a cyclic process and it could occur from any black hole irrespective of its size or energy. The time period can be different but any black hole can end up with a Big Bang.

I, Soumya Roy, to whom you've answered before, am definite to prove all those things stated above. But I cannot do it alone without your help because of insufficient equipments and proper laboratory. I'm definite if we prove all those things no one can stop us from winning the Nobel. These things cannot be proved yet because no one has ever think these in this point of view. Alternative referencing style

Hi. Yesterday I became enmeshed in an argument about the use of the alternative source referencing system here [3] and here [4]. To cut a long story short an editor took exception to the use of the recently enabled process which was agreed here [5]. I think it is a much more preferable system personally, although I can see the point of view of other editors. However, the reason for writing to you is to ask whether the relevant part of WP:FN should be amended to present the new alternative? As you can see, the other editor involved took exception because he felt it was employing a reference format style that is not currently in use on Wikipedia and not documented in a guideline or policy. Documenting it in the style guide would prevent any similar misunderstanding in the future as well as promoting its use. Regards Leaky Caldron 13:59, 8 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

You said this:

"The first 9 hours of the 2008 fundraiser (0:00 to 9:00 UTC) had 682 donors raising $19022 (max donation $200). The first 9 hours of this fundraiser (5:00 to 14:00 UTC) has had approximately 515 donors raising $23300 (max donation $3000). It is too early to be drawing strong conclusions, but the very early averages are similar."

Disequilibrium

Hi Robert,

I see you undid my edit, so I'm interested to know how I've misinterpreted. The sentence is: "The increasing measured fraction of CO2 in the atmosphere over the last 100 years implies that the level of equilibrium between sources and sinks of CO2 is rising."

That doesn't make sense to me. I read it as "the system is equilibrating," but we know the opposite to be true: the atmosphere/ocean system is being driven further from equilibrium, continuously. The sentence only makes sense to me if we substitute "disequilibrium" -- because sinks are failing to keep up with sources, due to the new human-caused carbon flux.

Alternately, you could say that "level of equilibrium is falling," but that's rather confusing.

Good page otherwise!

Jim —Preceding unsigned comment added by Barrett808 (talk • contribs) 15:05, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Carbon dioxide in the Earth system is partitioned between the atmosphere, the biosphere, and the oceans. As the associated section of the article states, the natural fluxes between these reservoirs are much larger than the annual human emissions. Hence the amount of carbon in the atmosphere exists in quasi-equilibrium with the sources and sinks in the other parts of the Earth system. In order for carbon dioxide to accumulate in the atmosphere (the smallest of the three reservoirs) implies that the level at which sources and sinks are balanced must have risen. Humans are responsible for adjusting that balance by adding additional sources, but the issue is more complicated than simply saying that we burned 8 GtC and therefore the atmosphere has 8 GtC more CO2.
Or put more succinctly, higher CO2 in the atmosphere means that concentration of CO2 required such that sources and sinks would balance (i.e. the equilibrium level) must have increased. Since the existing phrasing was confusing to you, perhaps you can suggest an alternative wording that would capture the same content? Dragons flight (talk) 17:59, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Robert, thanks for the reply. I honestly thought that was a typo! I see what you mean now -- the sinks (until recently) have offset the human input, which is to say that the fluxes into the sinks have increased with the anthropogenic forcing. (I say "until recently," because we have new evidence that the ocean sink is starting to fail.) My original thought was that if the system were in equilibrium, atmospheric CO2 would not be increasing.
I'm not sure how this could be phrased more clearly. To be in equilibium, the sum of the fluxes must be zero, and if I understand you correctly, you want to say that the magnitudes of complementary fluxes are larger ("rising equilibrium level"), but still sum to zero. Maybe it could say, "The increasing measured fraction of CO2 in the atmosphere over the last 100 years implies that the system of sources and sinks is equilibrating at a higher level of atmospheric CO2." Not sure that's clearer.
My other source of confusion was conflating the flux equilibrium with the radiative equilibrium with space. This is where the system is clearly in disequilibrium -- even if all anthropogenic sources stopped emitting today, we'd still have a couple of centuries of warming "in the pipeline" until thermodynamic equilibrium is reached. It might be worth a sentence or two to distinguish these two concepts.
Anyhoo, thanks for the clarification, and thanks for the great Global Warming Art! Do you have any plans to update those beautiful graphs with more recent data? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Barrett808 (talk • contribs) 21:14, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cite.php

Hi Dragons flight,

Following from the discussion on citations at the Village pump, I played a little with Cite.php extention. As you may have got from that discussion I am greatly in favour of templated citations. Others expressed a (great) dislike for them for a number of quite fair reasons, particularly the slowness of pulling in many templates and the manner in which they break-up text when used in line.

During that discussion I floated the idea of modifying Cite.php to do the templating of citations instead of transcluding a template. My suggestion was that they could be done like this:

  • <ref first="John" last="Murphy" title="Quisque Quis Orci Magna" publisher="Printing House Press" location="London" year="2009" page="55" isbn="978-3-16-148410-0" />

Doing so would eliminate the slowness caused by trancluding the current cite templates. Using your WP:LDR addition would address the issue of breaking-up of text when used in line.

I've made up a working example of Cite.php that accepts these kind of attributes and creates a rudimentary templated citation from them. It doesn't break current way of doing things.

I'm not sure of how to float the suggestion of integrating this idea into Cite.php. (Clearly the template is too rudimentary as yet to be actually integrated - and there would need to be consensus about what the citation style would be.) Should I contact User:Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason? Since we had some brief contact during the discussion at the Village Pump I thought I would ask you first.

Regards, --rannṗáirtí anaiṫnid (coṁrá) 16:52, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest. Avar is no longer maintaining it, and I am probably a better contact anyway at this point. Short answer? There is not a chance in hell that developers will allow the Cite extension to dictate reference formatting. The current system is flexible for a reason since Cite needs to support many different WMF and non-WMF sites. And in general everything in Mediawiki favors giving more control over content to the user and less to developers. There are alternative proposals for greatly speeding up the rendering time of citations that won't change behavior, so I wouldn't worry about that. It will be fixed eventually. But if people want to reform the styles, they really should be working on standardizing the templates.
In terms of what might be possible though, I have contemplated for some time allowing ref to pass parameters. In other words, have:
<ref name="bob" pages="99-102">{{cite journal| ...}}</ref>
be the same as
<ref name="bob">{{cite journal| ...| pages="99-102"}}</ref>
If that is designed so that things like <ref name="bob" pages="657" /> and <ref name="bob" pages="42-65" /> can render separately then it could address the main outstanding use case. In a post of on the board you asked about having the software fill in details based on partial references (e.g. ISBN numbers). That is probably possible too though I think other things would have to happen first. Dragons flight (talk) 18:03, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Damn, I just missed this. I just opened a bug on it. That the citation style would have to be easily definable was something that I was aware of. I don't think that would be insurmountable.
Thanks anyway, --rannṗáirtí anaiṫnid (coṁrá) 18:15, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Demo

Dragons flight,

On the back of feedback on the Cent page to do with citation styles, I implemented a demo of the enhancements I proposed for Cite.php. It takes in suggestions received from others including yourself.

The changes to Cite.php are relatively small (a new hook, one main new method and a few methods copied from the Spamblocklist extension). The definitions for citations are defined on-wiki (at MediaWiki:Citation styles). That page is read once per article and only if necessary. The bulk of the parsing is done directly in PHP. The style definitions I used on the demo site use the parser functions for some logic but on the whole it is "dumb" and based on string replacement in PHP.

From the demo, the new method produces less HTML and is substantially quicker to generate templated citations compared to transcluded templates. The HTML it produces is identical in size to a "plain text" reference version (I have not implemented COinS data on the demo site) and - to the eye at least - appears to be as quick to load as the plain text version. I suspect if it was actually timed that it be a slightly slower but to my eye it is not noticable.

The demo site is here. If you could take a look at it and drop any comments you have on my talk page, I would be grateful. --rannṗáirtí anaiṫnid (coṁrá) 11:50, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RD talk - copyvio

Hey there, I was monitoring WT:RD as I always do, during the very interesting discussion on how wonderful the RD's are, I saw what looks to me like a definite copyvio reproducing a subtantial portion of the work, and responded accordingly. Then I read a few more comments and see now that you consider it fair-use. I'm not on that side of the playing-field (possibly being a hard-liner on the topic of copyvio :) so I took the wobbly option of collapsing it. I realize your POV may differ and I won't get all bent out of shape if you revert this, though I'm concerned about the "substantial reproduction of the work". Looks like it's all spiralling out of control anyway, I'll have to send out for extra popcorn to watch this all play out. ;) Franamax (talk) 22:33, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Plot idea: Rate of change in temperature

It may be useful to show a 'rate of change' plot. One where the vertical axis is in `deg/year' and the horizontal axis is `year' (logarithmic). It is this which will emphasise the drastic events of recent times, since the dramatic change in temperature in such a short period of time is unprecedented. Perhaps Dragons flight could create this plot?? Mjspe1 (talk) 05:37, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

LDR bug?

Either I found a bug when using #tag:ref as a LDR, or my brain is shot. Please look at User:Gadget850/SandboxA. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 11:36, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there are several bugs related to ref stacking / #tag. This is largely a side effect of the fact the original Cite code was designed under the assumption that ref stacking would always generate an error. That and the out-of-order parser evaluation rules for #tag are a giant pain. Dragons flight (talk) 17:25, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I thought I was doing something wrong at first. Is there already a bug report on this issue? Out-of-order parser evaluation explains some of the oddities I was seeing. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:03, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there is one regarding ref stacking somewhere. Your specific example is new to me, but the underlying problem is the same. Dragons flight (talk) 22:11, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Recent temp charts without instrumental record?

I wonder if you could supply versions of your 1,000 & 2,000 year "spaghetti graphs" without the instrumental record?

I was just looking at these, and these would be nice to have because:

  • at present, the charts are somewhat "apples vs. oranges" -- ie, proxy vs. instrumental.
  • there's some reason to suspect the "value added" instrumental record is biased warm, as you are probably aware -- see, forex, Peter Webster's interesting comments on the CRU data here, and Ross McKitrick's disquieting essay on his UHI work here.

Your unilateral modification of an active sanction

I've started a thread here: Wikipedia_talk:General_sanctions/Climate_change_probation/Requests_for_enforcement#Unilateral_modification_of_active_sanction. I think it would be better to gain consensus for such a modification. It may well be that consensus exists. But if we modify that way based on principle, there are other sanctions that may need modification as well. So I invite you to discuss this. ++Lar: t/c 22:09, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was following the consensus that I feel already existed from the ANI discussion, as I explained in my posting at ANI. Dragons flight (talk) 22:28, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe that's appropriate, the way to go is seek consensus at Wikipedia:General sanctions/Climate change probation/Requests for enforcement, which I have put forward at AN/I. ++Lar: t/c 23:56, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
With respect, ANI is the audience with a larger number of experienced and uninvolved participants. While one also could have sought consensus at GSCC, I'd say that ANI is actually the more authoritative forum in cases such as this. Since the issue has already been discussed there, I see no reason to try and move it back within GSCC. Dragons flight (talk) 00:45, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
With respect, ANI is the audience with a larger number of inexperienced and non admin participants. Seeking consensus at GSCC is the right thing to do. I suggest you do so. Because, with respect, I don't see the consensus at ANI that you claim to. It may well be that consensus exists, but so far you haven't shown it. ++Lar: t/c 11:49, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thoughts on changes to satellite temperature measurements

The article was reorganized, with a decent chunk of information about the UAH satellite temperature dataset transferred to its own article, which is primarily what was eliminated from the STM article. Another subarticle was created by another editor (starting with STM's original content) which is attempting to focus more on the microwave imagers that measure atmospheric temperatures. Hi, Dragons flight!

Many years ago, you argued for a move from Nemesis (hypothetical star) to Nemesis (star). The matter of a move back came up, first in the context of a move from Tyche (planet) to Tyche (hypothetical planet). All of us who (until now) have expressed opinions are in favour of the longer names. Whether or not you still think the shorter (but IMHO misleading) names are better, you are of course very welcome to participate in Talk:Nemesis (star)#Requested move 2011 and Talk:Tyche (planet)#Requested move, respectively.

Congrats on the new job!

Rohde at the BEST project

Robert Rohde, a young physicist who left Berkeley with a PhD last year, does most of the hard work. He has written software that trawls public databases, themselves the product of years of painstaking work, for global temperature records. These are compiled, de-duplicated and merged into one huge historical temperature record. The data, by all accounts, are a mess. There are 16 separate datasets in 14 different formats and they overlap, but not completely. Muller likens Rohde's achievement to Hercules's enormous task of cleaning the Augean stables.
The wealth of data Rohde has collected so far – and some dates back to the 1700s – makes for what Muller believes is the most complete historical record of land temperatures ever compiled. It will, of itself, Muller claims, be a priceless resource for anyone who wishes to study climate change. So far, Rohde has gathered records from 39,340 individual stations worldwide.

Cool. Have fun! Cheers, Pete Tillman (talk) 05:23, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Dragons flight. On the global warming talk page the topic of why the trend is calculated from 1982 came up. I've read your note as to why and will update the talk accordingly. However, if you do make a new version of the graphs (please do they are invaluable) can I appeal for the longest possible period to be included. While I see your point about the greater discrepancy between sat and surface data early on, UAH and RSS include those years in their data and their trend calculations. While excluding those years may add to the accuracy, it can inadvertently give the impression of bias. --IanOfNorwich (talk) 01:43, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Revision history edit compressor and filtering the history record

Hi, I was looking through the wikitech archives and I noticed a thread you started back in Jan 2009 about a Revision history edit compressor. My understanding was that this would present diffs with only the relevant sections (not sure if that's a correct understanding), allowing diffs to load quicker. I was more interested in the paragraph where you discussed filtering the history to determine the major edits and the major contributors. I've been interested in coming up with a history filtering tool to screen out vandalism and minor tweaks, and also potentially filtering edits where references are added or removed. I'd also like to update the watchlist to show the number of edits which occurred that day. My programming skills are fairly limited (worked with C++, Java, VBA, and a little PHP and Javascript) but I'm trying to read up on Wikipedia hacking. Do you have any comment on the feasibility of these programs? I have to admit I don't really understand your code - I'd have a better idea if I could step through it, but I probably should start by looking at the code that generates diffs to begin with. I'm not sure I really understand why your compressor is necessary to do that sort of filtering. II | (t - c) 20:27, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Time 100 lists

I have created 20042011 Time 100 lists. I understand that several of these have been previously deleted. I have been pointed in the direction of Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2006 February 4 as an explanation. As I understand this page it derives from a legal ruling that "lists of items that are created entirely or primarily as a result of editorial opinion are subject to copyright protection". I have found that the above lists are a hybrid of polling data and editorial opinion. I am not sure if this was known before and whether the word "primarily" still applies.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:57, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A list is subject to copyright protection if the author(s) used creativity in the selection or arrangement of its elements. A typical test for "creativity" in this context is whether or not a different author given the same background information and process would necessarily arrive at the same selection and arrangement. For example, a list of facts (e.g. US states by population) is not creative, because anyone given the same facts ought to generate the same list. On the other hand, a list of the author's personal favorite foods would be considered creative since any two authors are unlikely to arrive at the same list. There are some complicated cases. For example, lists based purely on polling results are considered non-creative, since two authors looking at the same polling data would form the same list, even though the thing being polled may be subjective (e.g. favorite foods).
In general though, if subjective editorial judgment was used in such a way that different authors would be expected to construct different lists even given the same information, then the resulting list is usually subject to copyright protection. So, in the Time context, if it is polling plus editorial judgment, then that probably amounts to a work that is ultimately subjective and subject to copyright protection. On the other hand, if the list had been based purely on polling, it would generally be exempt from copyright protection. Dragons flight (talk) 07:55, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If there was a scoring system where based on all polling info and all editors opinions a numerical score was determined, does the fact that any publisher could use a different scoring system mean it is subjective? I don't know of any such scoring system, but I think this will be my first major page recreation "loss" and sort of grasping at straws.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 20:27, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for your feedback

Hi Dragons flight, thanks for your answer to my question on the Science desk. I'm hoping you can at least read my clarification of the point, because I believe your reply was based on misunderstanding what I was saying, and I am keen to learn from your knowledge. I have taken the step of posting on your talk page, which I do very rarely, because I've had to insert my reply in the middle of the thread, and it might get missed, and also because you clearly know the area well. Hello. I often use your graph of CO2 levels measured at Mauna Loa [[12]] as reasonable proof that "climate is warming" and "humanity needs to do something about it". But this graph appears to end in 2008. The published measurement for November 2011 is 390.31 ppm. If you can find the time, would you please update this graph? A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of scientists opposing the mainstream scientific assessment of global warming is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of scientists opposing the mainstream scientific assessment of global warming (5th nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Question regarding your charts on editing frequency

Greetings! I recently came across your charts on Editing Frequency over Time, including from bots. I am doing a research project on Wikipedia bots, and the data in these charts is great...thank you for your work there. The data seems to end in September 2008, so I'm wondering if you have any more current data to fill in the months between then and now...or if this is a script that you ran (which I'm guessing), I'm hoping you might run it again and update the chart. Finally, I'm wondering exactly where you grabbed the data from? Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide! UOJComm (talk) 00:27, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

Dear Dragons flight,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 05:47, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Did you ever know that you're my hero"

Dear DF, you have been a wiki-hero of mine for much longer than our recent interaction suggests. I just want you to know that. you're an NOTCENSORED wikipedian who has come through a LOT of complex cases with great authority. I just want you to know that-- when I'm on the wrong side of you, I generally suspect I'm on the wrong side of Wikipedia.

Thank you for all you do here. I have no idea what kind of a human being you are, but I have substantial memory of times where you've stood up for what is "right" on wikipedia.

When you edit/parially revert my edits, I feel happy that there is someone competent to supervise me. Vandalism Studies Update - August 2012

Hello, members of the Vandalism Studies Project! As some of us are quite new with the Vandalism Studies project, it would make sense for us to re-read some of the past studies, as well as studies outside the project. Please do so if you have a chance, just so we can get into the groove of things. We're planning on attempting to salvage the Obama study (or possibly simply convert it to a new Romney study), as well as hopefully begin our third study this November. If you have any ideas for Study 3, please suggest them! If you have any questions please post them on the project talk page. The article List of authors of ''Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis'' has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Highly detailed, but without a single reference we are unable to discern whether this is fact, fantasy or hoax

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I undid your Module:String update on mediawiki.org

Heya. On mediawiki.org you did "replace with enwiki's version which is more mature", but that was breaking mw:Template:str sub with "Expression error: Unexpected < operator". That in turn was breaking templates like mw:Template:git, so I undid the change. Maybe the {{Str sub}} has to be renamed on mediawiki as it has been on enwiki. Thanks for working on this! -- S Page (WMF) (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:32, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

LUA coord upgrade - missing from PDF output

Hi Dragons flight. It is possible that the recent conversion of Template:Coord to use LUA has suppressed the coordinates printed inline when using "Download as PDF" from the left-hand Toolbox. For example, 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics gold post boxes. A PDF I created last September has the coordinates printed as I would expect for inline.

I have isolated a simpler example in my sandbox - User:Oosoom/sb4. This is obviously a low priority problem, and may not be connected with the LUA change, but the ability to print lists of coordinates for use in the field is useful. Best wishes. Oosoom Talk 14:06, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that Mediawiki is presently ignoring all Lua scripts when generating PDF exports. Referred to developers as bugzilla:45861. Dragons flight (talk) 20:20, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Weather box

Nice work on the {{Weather box}}. I was wondering if you could fix the other problems with the template. In some cases the precipitation/rain is being converted to three decimal places instead of two, see Kamloops#Climate for an example. The other thing is if the precipitation/rain/snow is green then the average days should also be green. As far as I can see the best thing would be to set it up so that if "|precipitation colour = green" then all the others turn green with the need for specifying each line. Thanks. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 16:37, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Neither request is hard, though when it comes to behavioral changes, I'd prefer they first be raised at the template talk page to make sure there is no objection. Dragons flight (talk) 16:49, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dragonflight, I added a couple things to Module:Citation/CS1/tests to show more information. It appears that the rfr_id in the URL was different, since you used Special:ExpandTemplates to generate the other string. Navbox + Navbar

Looks good.. I made some edits for succinctness, and also moved the error handling for a missing name parameter from the navbox code into the navbar code (as a clear improvement over the current behavior of {{navbar}}, which is quite ugly if you don't pass it a name). But don't you think this should be a separate Module:Navbar? Navbars are used in many places other than navboxes. Toohool (talk) 01:49, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can split it out to a separate module if you think that's better. That will be a killer update given that it has nearly 8 million uses. Dragons flight (talk) 02:10, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Global warming art images

Hi Dragons flight. Please see Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Antarctica Without Ice Sheet.png. Not realizing until I looked further at the site that you were the copyright holder for this image, I had nominated it for deletion. My concern is with the wording of your statement - that your images "may be used in any work where the publication as a whole is released under one of the following free content". Wikipedia and Commons both have plenty of images not released under the GFDL and so just saying, "you can use it in a GFDL project" isn't the same thing as saying, "this image is published in accordance with the GFDL". Would you be willing to resolve the issue by simply affirming the GFDL/CC license for this image at File:Antarctica Without Ice Sheet.png? Thanks. --B (talk) 18:01, 17 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I have closed the deletion request based on your comments there. I share your preference for the strong copyleft licenses and have been annoyed when some of my photos that I uploaded here have been used without so much as attribution (much less compliance with the license). I've sent cease & desist letters to even a couple of regular news outlets over it. A problem (and the reason that I haven't actively pursued anything beyond sending off some annoyed letters) is that in the US, you can only get statutory damages if you comply with the registration formalities ... otherwise you are limited to actual damages which, for an image that I'm not making any effort to market, is basically $0. --B (talk) 01:59, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Navbox

There are no outstanding issues that I know of. I was thinking that {{Navbox subgroup}} might be a good next test, since it has 200,000 transclusions and can exercise most of the navbox params. But if you think we're ready to jump to the main template, I wouldn't object. Toohool (talk) 06:09, 25 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, thanks for all your help with this! Toohool (talk) 04:15, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just noted this category on a page that I edited (Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites). I added two references there that seem to trigger this cat. The references are online, which is why I included an accessdate (which I seem to remember was displayed, but that is not the case any more). However, I cannot include a URL. The reason is that this resource is behind a pay-wall and uses dynamic session-specific URLs. This means that any URL that I would copy would not work for anyone else and, once I have closed and restarted my browser, not even for myself. I don't really see a workaround and in this case, having an accessdate but no URL seems acceptable to me. I could, of course, include a URL to the homepage of the database, but as that is not the page where I found the information sourced by this reference, that seems less correct to me (and also risks someone adding a "fails verification" template to the reference). I'd appreciate your advice on how to handle this situation. Thanks! --Randykitty (talk) 15:34, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It has always been the case that accessdate is ignored in the citation unless a URL is specified. The only difference is that now there is a tracking cat present to identify when people do this, which based on the cat is not that uncommon. As to whether the citation formatting behavior should be changed, I'd suggest that is a better discussion to have in a broader forum, such as Help talk:Citation style 1 or one of the village pumps. I will note that you specified this as a "cite book", in which case it seems weird to me that the information should depend on when you access it. Dragons flight (talk) 15:59, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This used to be a book series with one volume appearing each year. I don't know whether they still produce the printed version, but it's been available online for quite some time (can't really remember when that started). I guess it's debatable whether you call this a book series or an annual journal, but that doesn't change anything about the above problem, I think. I'll go to the discussion page that you indicated. Thanks! --Randykitty (talk) 16:31, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

re {{cite web}}

OK, but the access date is now displayed to the reader. This is extraneous information in most cases, so if you could fix that when you get a chance, thanks. Herostratus (talk) 16:45, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Hope you don't object, but I've copied your ParsePage and DiscussionIndex modules to a sandbox (here and here) where I intend to play around with them and learn about Lua in WP. Don't panic: although I'm a Lua newbie I won't be plaguing you with lots of dumb questions :) FWIW I think this means of summarizing busy talk pages has a lot going for it, and can see it getting a lot of use when it becomes better known - hope it doesn't stress the servers too much! Best,  —SMALLJIM  16:20, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That's fine. One thing though. I think the discussion index ought to be changed from using frame.preprocess and transclusion to get its target page to using mw.title:getContent. The later is much faster and provides the raw wikitext rather than the post-expanded version. getContent hadn't yet been created when I first started on DiscussionIndex, so it wasn't an option, but now that it is, I think it is preferable. I was envisioning doing the conversion myself at some point, but most of my wiki time has been going into migrating citations. Dragons flight (talk) 17:56, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I get the gist, but you can't expect any such wizardry from me, I'm afraid. I hadn't even heard of Lua till last week, and though it's considerably more comprehensible than all those damned template curlies which I never got to grips with, I'm right at the start of the learning curve. My only similar experience is using Perl to interface with the MediaWiki API. Great work on those cite templates, BTW.  —SMALLJIM  11:07, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Navbox edits in Telugu WP cause script error

Changing te:Template:Navbox to Lua version seem to have caused script error in the most popular usage instances of about 3500 as used in Telugu Wikipedia. The detailed error is "No such module". I have reverted to the earlier version for now. Still such errors can be seen in the example template uses in the later sections of the page. Request your help to address the issue.--Arjunaraoc (talk) 23:35, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

At the bottom of the edit page from Template:Navbox, it lists four "Modules", specifically Module:HtmlBuilder, Module:Navbox, Module:Navbar, Module:URL, which are the Lua components that are used by the Lua version of the Navbox. Your error most likely means that you neglected to copy one or more of these over to the Telugu WP. Dragons flight (talk) 23:47, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The error does not appear, but the box layout is affected. It appears with short width and only after selecting show, does it become normal. Guess more Lua skills are needed to fix this. --Arjunaraoc (talk) 09:09, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

frame:extensionTag

Hello Dragons flight, I have just updated Module:Footnotes in Thai Wikipedia to the current version in English Wikipedia, and found that frame:extensionTag() doesn't work there (raise an error "attempt to call method 'extensionTag' (a nil value)"). So I reverted the module back to the previous version. It seems that frame:extensionTag() is enabled only on English Wikipedia. I just want to know when that function will be enabled to all Wikipedias? Thank you :) --Nullzero (talk) 12:03, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

according to the roadmap, thwiki (as well as all other wikimedia wikis) will have it on april 10 (tomorrow) - prolly the cheapest strategy is to wait for 1.22 to hit you rather than work a complex solution that will only be needed for one day. peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 14:03, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you help improve a .JS gadget at Wikidata?

Hi there. I'm contacting you since I understand you played a major part in updating the code behind {{Cite journal}} and the like, where one of the changes that came about as a result of your work was the elimination of two full stops being rendered in articles where there oughtn't be. Mauna Loa Carbon Dioxide

Hello Robert! Any chance you'd want to update File:Mauna Loa Carbon Dioxide.png? It's about 3 years old now. Just thought I'd ask :) Kaldari (talk) 06:06, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! It seems that you forgot to remove the "/sandbox" part while doing this edit:

local cfg = require( 'Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration/sandbox' );
You're right, thanks. Dragons flight (talk) 20:05, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
just curious: wouldn't it make more sense to load the configuration using "mw.loadData" rather than "require"? from the description of mw.loadData, it seems that this would be ideal, seeing that there might be hundreds of citation in one page, no? peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 20:30, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It would make sense if mw.loadData was actually faster. In this application, mw.loadData is actually substantially slower than require. At present it seems that mw.loadData adds rather a lot of overhead when dealing with deeply nested tables or when one needs to traverse large segments of the included data (rather than just picking out a few values). Some of this overhead might be related to bugzilla:47300. Dragons flight (talk) 20:40, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
interesting. not sure i understood all the details, though... doesn't bugzilla:47300 really mean that once the fix will be merged, "require" performance can go down? peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 20:57, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
47300 involves a constellation of symptoms, and though the root cause is known I'm not entirely sure what all the effects of solving it will be. My best guess is that there will be little to no change associated with require. However, one of the symptoms of 47300 was that data structures stored via mw.loadData were being cloned at the start of every invoke session (exactly one of the things mw.loadData was intended to avoid), so resolving that bug will probably lead to improvements in performance when using mw.loadData. Dragons flight (talk) 22:22, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Would you have time to update User:Dragons flight/Lua performance, in light of the overhead reduction a while back? And, I suppose, all the error handling added into the citation templates. Also, how would you like me to credit you for calculating those figures in my presentation? BJorsch (WMF) (talk) 19:09, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a time frame when you would need it? I can do an update but it will probably be several days before I could get to it. For rough numbers, one can take the time per iteration and subtract 2.5 ms to get an estimate of the effect of the overhead reduction. The citation templates run around 120-130 / second right now (and having 47300 resolved will actually improve upon that by a little bit). Depending on whether the audience is primarily people from enwiki or not, you could acknowledge me as either Robert Rohde, Dragons_flight, or both. Dragons flight (talk) 23:41, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Citation/CS1 Script error

Hello, there; I see your name all over the Module:Citation/CS1 and figured I'd drop you a note. I've recently spun up an instance of MediaWiki 1.20.4 and used some imported Wikipedia articles as test cases. I'm getting big red "Script error" messages in every <references /> section that uses Citation/CS1. I do not receive the errors when not calling those templates, such as just using <ref> tags. On this wiki, I've installed the Scribunto extension, ParserFunctions, Cite and a few others. I then imported a bunch of templates from Wikipedia, the Common.css, etc. No change.

I've then replicated this same issue using a brand-new MediaWiki install with the same results.

The error message given in the popup is: Lua error in Module:Citation/CS1 at line 874: attempt to index field 'title' (a nil value). Backtrace: (tail call): ? Module:Citation/CS1:874: ? (tail call): ? mw.lua:425: ? (tail call): ? [C]: in function "xpcall" MWServer.lua:73: in function "handleCall" MWServer.lua:266: in function "dispatch" MWServer.lua:33: in function "execute" mw_main.lua:7: in main chunk [C]: ?

I can't seem to find any documentation on this, but it seems to point back to that Module. Do you have any idea why this error is happening, or any thoughts on how to debug this? Is there documentation available explaining this? I have root access to both of these wiki; one is an Amazon EC2 and the other is a VMWare image. Thanks in advance. C morgan2005 (talk) 00:32, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The error suggests that the standard library of Mediawiki Lua functions, contained in the table mw, isn't loading properly (hence mw.title is nil). This is probably a problem with the Mediawiki install / configuration, but I wouldn't immediately know what to try. You might ask User:Anomie. I think he is more likely to have an insight into how to fix it. Dragons flight (talk) 00:59, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'd suspect a too-old version of Scribunto. What revision of Scribunto do you have installed, C morgan2005? Anomie 10:30, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using the regular 1.20 release from ExtensionDistributor of Scribunto. I'm not finding a README, but there was a "fadcbb6" in the filename (build?) I'm getting the same result on both a 32-bit and x64 Ubuntu VM. Is there something like maintenance.php to rebuilt the mw table?C morgan2005 (talk) 23:20, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello-- this graph

Hey, good evening, I was wondering if you could help me figure out if this graph should be included in the 'Global Warming Art' clique thing. I also would like to know how exactly individual Wikipedia users get selected to be in that group. I'm curious as well if you know of any analogous graphs to this one that also shows U.S. temperature data (I see lots of lots of images about world data, but few things on the U.S. specifically). To be honest, the fact that climate change in the United States has been as gosh-darn small as just one degree F (apparently)... feels odd (would any American notice if I changed their room's temperature by 1-F?). Cite AV media

Hi, re this edit - I see that you used |CitationClass=AV media, which won't work as intended. Any citations produced by this template will begin with <span class="citation AV media">, which is three separate classes, where I suspect you intended two.

See HTML5 Attributes, where the class row has value set of space-separated tokens. Since a space is the delimiter between multiple class names in the same class= attribute, single class names therefore cannot themselves contain spaces. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:13, 20 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Citation templates?

Hi, as you are no doubt aware, citation templates are "broken" throughout the Wikipedia as a result of recent changes to the templates. For a good example, take a look at The Magpie (Monet)#References and all the instances of "unknown" and "ignored" parameters. Ideally, I would just remove all citation templates from every article I'm working on, but unfortunately, editors keep adding them back. Can you tell me how to solve this problem? Thanks. Visual editor protection

So why didn't this work?—Kww(talk) 06:50, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's because you used a <span>...</span> - try a <div>...</div>. There are certain elements which are not permitted inside a <span>...</span> - it's kinda complicated, but in general, if it draws a box or makes a list, you can't put it inside <span>...</span>. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:49, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That kind of works. (I hope Kww doesn't mind my experimenting on his userpage.) Apparently the protectedNode style doesn't reliably work for floated elements, as I can still select the Babel Template and the Admin icon, but the rest of the page becomes uneditable. Precision format

I have been working on Module:Infobox_settlement, which implements all the various subtemplates of {{Infobox settlement}} in lua. I use the math module, and currently call two functions from it: precision and precision_format. The way I call precision is very simple, since there is a _precision function, but with precision_format, I have to load an arg table, convert the input to strings, then call the function. I am wondering if it would be possible to make this less complicated by adding a _precision_format subfunction to the math module? this is used to duplicate the {{rnd}} template. thank you. Too many cite messages now hidden=false

We need latest cite messages re-hidden in Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration. As you likely know, User:Gadget850 took the wild, bold step to force all cite errors to be visible (on 26 August 2013) in thousands of pages (at least 9,000 pages warn how {cite_web} must have "url=" now). Complaints have been instaneous and numerous, for cases such as page "Audie Murphy" quickly hacked to suppress 90(!) red-error messages in the References section. See VPT thread:

In the next thread there, after that, User:Gadget850 has announced quitting of CS1 cite templates, and claims to have removed 1,441 pages from his watchlist in resigning from further involvement. Meanwhile, some users like the cite-error warnings, so re-hiding the CS1 messages, as during the prior 5 months, would be a consensus-compromise to fix the current "sea of red messages" crisis in many thousands of pages. I was wondering the same. It is a very clear figure, and used on many pages. If you don't have the time to do it, I might make an attempt if you can provide me with the data. My skills in producing figures are not that good, though.
If you were to have even more time, could you also upload a Dutch version? The translations are as follows:
Modeled -> Gemodelleerd. Observed -> Geobserveerd. Greenhouse gases -> Broeikasgassen. Solar -> Zon. Ozone -> Ozon. Volcanic -> Vulkanisch. Sulfate -> Sulfaat (if your new data would instead provide a number for aerosols, the translation would be Aerosolen), Temperature change -> Temperatuurverandering. Modelled Forcing Response -> Respons op gemodelleerde forcering. Climate Change Attribution -> Klimaatverandering, toeschrijving.

A message left at Module talk:Citation/CS1/Archive 9#Change to lua library yesterday suggests that some code you wrote for the Citation Style 1 module is going to die on 18 February 2014. Keeping track of DOIs used.

Of interest to all devs on the Lua module Citation/CS1 @Dragons flight:, @Trappist the monk:, @Wikid77:

I'm working on the Open-Access Signalling Project, which aims to upload the full article text to wikisource and link it to the reference in Wikipedia. I'm writing the bot at the moment to do this, and I'm encountering a question - how do I keep track of the values of the template {{Cite doi}} and the doi parameter of {{Cite journal}}, in as close to real-time as possible?

Is it possible to modify code of {{Cite journal}} in such a way that it will make a record or push a stream of when the "doi" paramter is changed?

The most efficient approach I can come up with at the moment is to query the SQL servers on Labs in constant loop, returning the results of "What transcludes {{Cite doi}} and {{Cite journal}}" and seeing if the last_edited timestamp is newer than previous? If the last_edit is newer, then get the content of the page and see if the doi values has changed, checking against a local database. But this seems horribly ineffecient.

Thanks, Maximilianklein (talk) 18:43, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand what it is that you want, and I'm not sure that I do, I suspect that what you're looking for is not possible. But is 'real-time' tracking of the |doi= parameter in {{cite journal}} citations really necessary? Documents with doi identifiers don't change.

gravitation

Please an answer.

Two last posts and then I go sleeping.

Gravitation Relativity Cosmology

I have put a small exercise

N738139

I am sorry to disturb you. I know you have other things to do than to answer my questions. But if we consider :

High gravity on A, low gravity on B.
 :*Synchro0 : 00h00 on the two glocks.
 :*Synchro1 : 01h00 on glock A 00h59 on B.
 :*Synchro2 : sunrise, 02h00 on A 01h58 on B.
 :*Synchro3 : sunset, 06h00 on A 05h54 on B.
The referential was A, now lets with B:
 :*Synchro0 : 00h00 on the two glocks.
 :*Synchro1 : 01h01 on glock A 01h00 on B.
 :*Synchro2 : sunrise, 02h02 on A 02h00 on B.
 :*Synchro3 : sunset, 06h06 on A 06h00 on B.
B has to compare data with A at 6h00 for A. It means 5h54 for B

Am I wrong ?

RfA data

Hi Dragons flight. I've been thinking about collecting and analysing some RfA data and stumbled across your probability plot today. Just wondering how you collected the data for that plot and whether you wrote up any further analysis of it? Thanks, Sam Walton (talk) 23:23, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Revise caption on File:Climate science opinion2.png ?

You may recall a discussion of this then-new chart at New bar chart. You seemed to agree that it would be better to change "Largely caused by humans" to "Significant human impact."

This never got done, and the issue has been revived at Graphic.

Would you be able to edit the chart to read ""Significant human impact?" This would seem to match the survey results more closely. Thanks in advance, Pete Tillman (talk) 04:26, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Already done by another editor. You might check in at the discussion, to see if you agree with the mods proposed. Thanks, Pete Tillman (talk) 14:56, 4 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

I have a problem with my email, can you send me a message so I see if you get the response? Thanks μηδείς (talk) 23:46, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I sent you a test email. Dragons flight (talk) 23:51, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OKay, thanks. it's half past noon, NY time, and I am sending an email through wikipedia, with an identifier word so we know we are speaking of the same mail. Please let me know if you get it. μηδείς (talk) 17:42, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
After you told me to look for it I found it in my spam folder. Under ordinary circumstances, I almost never check the spam folder so there would be a high probability of missing it, if you hadn't mentioned that it was coming. Keyword: Smaug. Google also added a big warning bar over top of it that said: "Be careful with this message. Our systems couldn't verify that this message was really sent by yahoo.com. You might want to avoid clicking links or replying with personal information." Dragons flight (talk) 18:24, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks, that's extremely helpful. (I got a notice at 12:42 NYC time the message had been returned undeliverable.) I will simply delete the yahoo account, which seems entirely useless and create a new one. Feel free to delete or archive this, you've been very helpful. μηδείς (talk) 21:57, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, again

Precious

"clear the head"
Thank you, veteran editor devoting your life to earth sciences, climatology and related areas, on scientific background, for custom graphics, for starting Religious cosmology ("creating the hopes of stopping the religion edit wars"), for creating modules including one that intentionally does nothing, for "clear the head", - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (23 June 2009)!
