History

After 1947, the Government of independent India focused on the development of indigenous science and technology. As a technology base was being created by setting up of Indian Institute of Technology, it became clear that the country needed to simultaneously augment management talent and resources. This led to the creation of the Indian Institutes of Management in the country. The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was established in 1973.

IIM Bangalore strives to achieve excellence through partnerships with industry and leading academic institutions, the world over. Building on the base of its highly accomplished faculty and motivated student body, IIMB has evolved into a premier centre for management education and research. The flagship Postgraduate Programme in Management (PGP) is very highly rated. IIMB also has a one year Full Time Residential MBA program - EPGP (Executive Post graduate program) that caters to people with extensive industry experience. In addition to the long-duration programmes (PGP, EPGP, PGSEM, PGPPM, EGMP and FPM), IIMB offers a wide range of top quality executive education programmes to meet the continuing education needs of business executives.

Campus

Often termed as the place to "B",the accommodation consists of 16 hostel blocks, one executive block, one MHU block for PGPPM participants and the executive accommodation at the Management Development Center. All the students are provided with accommodation on campus in well-appointed single room in the institute hostels. 24 hours Internet connectivity, fully automatic washing machines, music room and recreation room are standard features. The campus is also Wi-Fi enabled. Laundry and Ironing services are also provided. The hostels also have intercom facility, which is linked to the institute intercom. There is also a student run library called 'Book Rack', a music club and student run Shop called 'MARS' in the hostel premises.

The campus was designed by celebrated architect B V Doshi and was completed in 1983.[2] It is a conversation piece amongst laypersons and professionals alike. The campus is a destination and a pilgrimage for students of architecture and practicing architects, with the architecture of the academic and administrative blocks becoming a case study.

Post Graduate Programme in Management

The two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP)[3] is the flagship programme of the Institute. It is designed to enable students to acquire the skills and capabilities that will enable them to reach responsible Global positions in management. The Programme revolves around the principle that world-class business leaders are not mass-produced; they are nurtured and developed with personalised care and attention, in small work groups and teams, and in a practical, application-oriented user-friendly environment.

The programme lays the foundation for conceptual and analytical reasoning, and gives the students an insight into the dynamics of the business environment.It prepares students to manage and lead in global business scenario which is getting increasingly complex and dynamic.

The programme design is inspired by management practice rather than ivory tower academics. The course material and design is oriented towards current and emerging issues in management. The curriculum undergoes a complete transformation every three years. In addition, it is adapted significantly every year to keep it abreast with the current business environment. IIMB has the distinction of offering the largest variety of elective courses in the second year of the PGP.

Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management The Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management (EPGP)[4] is a residential full time intensive one year program designed to enhance skills and capabilities essential for responsible positions at senior management levels. Challenging, widespread and globally oriented program's objective is to produce future leaders who can handle the dynamic corporate environment.

Designed for professionals with substantial work experience, the key attribute of this program is its focus on emerging economies. Post-Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management

The Post-Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management (PGSEM) leading to a Post-Graduate Diploma in Software Enterprise Management is an executive general management education programme designed for the specific needs of professionals working in the software and information technology industry in India. As part of its drive to foster Excellence through Partnerships, IIMB launched the PGSEM in the year 1998 at its Bangalore campus. With more than ten years of experience running and fine-tuning the programme to cater to the changing needs of the industry, the programme is available to participants at Bangalore. The curriculum is continuously reviewed and updated based on a thorough review of the programme and the changing demands of the industry.

The programme is run under the aegis of the Center for Software and Information Technology Management (CSITM). Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy & Management (PGPPM),[5] a Master's degree aims at strengthening the public policy and managerial skills of future leaders from the civil services, and senior managers from the social, infrastructure and private sectors. It is open to both Indian and International candidates from Government, and Non Government and Private Sector. In India, it is open to all candidates from All India Services like IAS, IPS, IFS and other civil services besides the Government, Non-Government and Private sector.

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)[6] is the doctoral programme of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB).The FPM at IIMB is globally recognized, and is a premier source of rigorous, and inter-disciplinary research in all areas of business management and public policy including, corporate strategy and policy, economics and social sciences, finance and control, marketing management, organization behaviour and human resources management, production and operations management, quantitative methods and information systems, public systems, and public policy. The Mission of the FPM at IIMB is to: Provide rigorous, world-class, inter-disciplinary training in all areas of business management and public policy that will equip students with the ability to conduct cutting edge, publication quality research of international standard. Contribute to the creation and transmission of knowledge in all areas of business management and public policy with emphasis on issues faced by firms and organizations in India. International Masters Program in Practicing Management

The IMPM is an international executive masters program focused on the practice of managing. It is designed for very experienced managers and entrepreneurs, to help them become even better managers and leaders, and to make a lasting impact on their organisations.

It is one of the most authentically international masters program. It creates many perspectives on management and business as it moves between different countries and business schools. The program is based on five 10-day modules in the UK, Canada, India, China and Brazil, thus offering a major experience of three of the four BRIC countries.

The program is an international collaborative executive education program jointly offered by IIMB with Stanford University, London School of Business, GSB Chicago, INSEAD, McGill University, Lancaster University, ESADE Business School and a consortium of Japanese universities.

IIM Bangalore has also been supporting several enterprising startups during their early phase of development via N S Raghavan Center for Entrepreneurial learning.[7] Potential startups can submit their business plans, submitted plans are reviewed by a renowned committee of successful entrepreneurs and professors. Selected startups are given place & incubation help to grow their venture during early phases.

Centre for Public Policy

The Centre for Public Policy (CPP)[8] at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) was created in 2000 through a strong partnership agreement between the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Government of India (GoI), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and IIMB. Today, it has evolved into a leading policy think tank engaged in cutting-edge research, teaching, training and capacity building and works on improving development outcomes across the region. The CPP pioneered the application of management disciplines for better public services and governance in India and it runs the country’s leading Masters-level programme in public policy and management. Its strong evidence-based research has focused on government innovations, regulation, policy making, administrative and organizational reform, public-private partnerships and IT in government. It conducts various innovative and influential executive education and doctoral programmes.

The CPP has been designated as a Centre of Excellence by the Ministry of Urban Development and also by Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. It work in public policy is continuously being strengthened through strong collaborative networks and partnerships with other policy think tanks, policy professionals and practitioners around the world.

Centre for Software & Information Technology Management The Centre for Software & Information Technology Management (CSITM)[9] consolidates research, consulting, teaching and training efforts on management issues concerning the Indian and Global Software Industry, while fostering close links with the software industry. The Software Industry is characterized by swift and continual changes. Individuals and organizations have to be able to learn, change and adapt constantly or risk obsolescence. The Centre through its research programmes and other academic and other academic activities sustain the leading edge character of the PGSM and other programmes offered to the IT industry. The activity of the Centre is guided by an Advisory Board, which sets policies and directions of development for the programme.

Financial Assistance

In keeping with the belief that no student should be deprived of the opportunity to study at IIM Bangalore due to lack of financial resources, it extends financial aid every year to students in need of such assistance.

The opportunity to apply for financial aid is given to all students whose annual household income is below Rs. 300,000[18] as well as to those with severe financial difficulties arising from sudden unforeseen circumstances. The primary assumption behind the IIMB financial aid/ scholarships scheme is financial needs would be the sole basis of financial aid rather than merit-cum-means.

MASH

The MArketing SHrine of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore is a student run club with a focus on marketing and related disciplines. Networth (The Finance Club)

Networth, the finance club at IIM Bangalore functions as the interface between the student community and the financial world viz. financial institutions, regulatory bodies and the academia. IIMB in Popular Culture

The campus was also the site for the shooting of the bollywood film Three Idiots directed by Rajkumar Hiranii and starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. The film is loosely based on a famous novel, Five Point Someone by Indian writer IIT Delhi alumnus Chetan Bhagat [20]
