1905 is an upcoming Japanese film directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa and starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Matsuda Shota and Maeda Atsuko.[1][2]
Production
Filming will take place in various locations in Japan and Taiwan. Plans for the film were made in 2009. Although the film is a Japanese production, approximately 90% of dialogue will be in Chinese. The film is scheduled to be released in Fall 2013.[1][3] During the filming process, the set within Taiwan will recreate Yokohama as it appeared in 1905. The film is backed by Hong Kong-based film studio Sil-Metropole, and will be co-distributed by Shochiku and Prenom H. The project is estimated to cost $10 million, and will be Kurosawa's largest film yet.[4]
Plot
The film is set in the year 1905, during the waning years of the Qing Dynasty, at a time when numerous Chinese revolutionaries travelled to Japan as students to study modernisation. Yan Yunlong (Tony Leung) is a loan shark who travels to Japan to collect overdue debts from five men. Meanwhile, Kato Tamotsu (Matsuda) is a member of Houkokukai, an ultranationalist group, who is also searching for the same five men.[1][4][2]
