Riot police in Rome respond to the burning of cars and government buildings by Occupy protesters on October 15.

The 15 October 2011 global protests are an ongoing series of protest inspired by the Spanish "Indignants" and the Occupy Wall Street movements. As of 9 October other protestors made calls for global demonstrations on October 15 in cities in more than 78 countries.[1][2] Using Facebook and Meetup to coordinate the events, some pages show only a few dozen will attend while others have thousands.

A group of protesters are organizing an occupation of the London Stock Exchange to bring attention to what they see as unethical behavior on the part of banks. One of the organizers of the protest said the protests are focused against "increasing social and economic injustice in this country". In his opinion, "Since the financial crisis the Government has made sure to maintain the status quo and let the people who caused this crisis get off scot-free, whilst conversely ensuring that the people of this country pay the price, in particular those most vulnerable."[3][4][5][6][7][8][9] A similar protest group inspired by Occupy Wall Street has formed in the UK under the name OccupyLSX.[10][11][12]

In Ireland protests were held throughout the country, including in Dublin and Cork. What The Irish Times described as "well-humoured protest" marched on the Department of Finance in Dublin with a low-key Garda (police) presence. The nearby Merrion Hotel, where the EU-IMF troika stayed during negotiations involving the €67 billion bailout of the country's banks, was also a focus of protests.[13] Richard Boyd Barrett, TD gave a speech. Protesters sat down on the street and chanted against the EU and IMF troika. The "Occupy Dame Street" protest, set up outside the Central Bank of Ireland in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, also continued throughout the day.[13]
